HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman
god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the
world’s largest iron statue, that of the Roman god,
Vulcan. We named our Starfleet chapter the
Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star
Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966.
Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods.
We create our own “armor and weapons” here, in
our newsletter, so it is called The Anvil.
The Anvil, Issue 247, is the monthly newsletter of
the USS Hephaestus, NCC-2004, of Starfleet, The
International Star Trek Fan Association. All terms
and phrases from Star Trek are owned by
Paramount Pictures Corporation, a division of
Paramount Communications and all rights are
reserved.

Greetings, This month starts the new social schedule. We have done away with the business meeting to focus more on the social event. The social event is now scheduled for the 2nd Saturday of the month. We are looking for ideas on what kind of things we might do and what might fit schedules better so that we may appeal to a wider range of people. Please remember to put on your schedule the Alabama Phoenix Festival at the end May. A lot of great guest are planned and looks to be a lot of fun. If you have an interesting article, movie or game review or a short story you would like to see in print please email it to the email address below so I can put it in the next anvil. Short stories may be spread out over several Anvils if to long for a single issue. Capt. MarkAdam Miller [email protected]

Feb. 18, 2012 – Social:
The social was a game night and Danny Potts brought a new game. The new game was Star Trek Heroclix. Even thought the game is a 2 to 4 player game 6 people played. The winner was Danny but that was because of some good rolls of the dice and not because it was his game.
Attendance: 11 people.
Personnel Updates:
No personal updates were given to me at this time.
Opportunities:
I am the head of the Trek Track for Alabama Phoenix Festival. They are looking for volunteers to help
with the festival. If you want to help you can go to this link and click on volunteers.
http://www.alabamaphoenixfestival.com/index.html
Rules for Volunteers
• All volunteers are expected to be helpful and courteous to APF attendees and guests. • All Volunteers are expected to work a minimum of 16 hours. This can include set-up and takedown
time. (More than 16 hours is appreciated and earns you Phoenix Feather points.) • All volunteers are expected to attend 1 of the 3 volunteer meetings that will be held prior to the 2012
event. See this page of the website for dates, times and locations. • As a volunteer who survives the event and follows the above rules, you will be fed and clothed (at
least for the weekend) and most importantly you will be eligible to be work at future APF events. • There is a one-time staff registration fee of $10.
All volunteer forms will be subject to approval. If you pre-register and are then later called to be a
volunteer, don't worry. We will refund your registration cost or transfer it to another person.
If you want to help with the Star Trek Track, a Star Trek uniform would be a great help.
SSttaarrfflleeeett MMaarriinnee CCoorrppss Greetings,
The new Commandant's Challenge is to donate food to your local food banks. This is a challenge to all SFMC personnel and is reported on the unit reports. The 646th MSG (Hartsel) was activated. The 5th BN now has a unit which is stationed in Cuba.
We are looking for new Marines to join the unit from the USS Hephaestus.
