THE 100TH BOARD OF DIRECTORS: LOOKING
BACK ON 2015, LOOKING FORWARD TO 2016
After the publication of the last issue of the PPP, we received a
few more submissions from members of the Board of Directors
regarding what were their highlights of 2015 and what they were
looking forward to in 2016. Here are their thoughts:
BERT HAMAKADO
Descendants Chapter President
For 2015, the Shinnen Enkai was a great event to start the New
Year. It was a nice gathering of veterans, wives, widows,
descendants and grandchildren having a fun time together.
Starting with a Banzai toast to the cooking of the mochi rice,
making mochi and pounding mochi in the traditional way led by
the Kawashima family. Having a bowl of ozoni soup for health,
good luck, longevity and happiness for the rest of the year. The
Bon Dance, a good lunch, lucky number prizes, and entertainment
were enjoyed by all participants who attended the event.
For 2016, I am looking forward to continuing to honor the
veterans and helping with the challenges of the Club.
DOT TAMASHIRO
Headquarters/Medics Chapter President
It’s a great honor and pleasure to serve as President of
Headquarters Chapter and represent our Chapter at the Board
Meetings where I get to meet so many members and guests.
Unlike nursing, I have to think a lot before making any decision.
In 2016, I’m just hoping that more members will participate,
instead of the same few who attend and do most of the work. May
I suggest we somehow improve the communications within our
Club?
It was so good to see Hershey Miyamura at our Mini Reunion in
Las Vegas. Hope to see you again in 2016 as we missed seeing
you these past several years.

DESCENDANTS CHAPTER NEWS by Bert Hamakado
Hope you had a nice Christmas and a Happy New
Year. Best of health and happiness to you in 2016.
DESCENDANTS CHAPTER WREATH AND
POINSETTIA PLANT SALE
Much mahalo to everyone who made the Wreath and
Poinsettia Plant Sale a success. Thank you to all who
participated in our sale by buying wreaths and
poinsettia for the holidays. We sold all wreaths and
poinsettia as ordered. I must give credit to the
personnel (volunteers) who helped with the sales.
Prior to the sale date, volunteers were busy setting up
tables in Turner Hall, placing foil on the poinsettia
pots, issuing and packing, loading the wreaths and
poinsettia in the buyers’ cars, and cleaning up after the
sale was over. December 4 and 5th were extra busy
due to the wreath and poinsettia pick up as well as
getting ready for the Able and Baker Christmas party.
CLUBHOUSE HOLIDAY DECORATING
Thank you very much to all of Santa’s helpers (too
many to list individually) who helped put up all of the
holiday decorations at the Clubhouse in time for the
Chapter Christmas parties. Thank you also to the
volunteer crew who took down and packed up all of
the decorations in time for Turner Hall Theater.
TURNER HALL THEATER
Two movies were shown on 19th January 2016 at the
Clubhouse in Turner Hall. The first movie was a
travelogue of the 1962 group trip to Japan taken by
157 members of the 100th including veterans, wives
and two children. Robert Sato from Able Company
coordinated the 30 day long trip which included a
chartered Pan Am Airlines airplane and a busy
itinerary of sights and events. The travelers visited
temples, enjoyed Japanese entertainment, and even
met the Prime Minister of Japan! The veterans shared
the aloha with the Japanese people by singing
Hawaiian songs, playing ukulele and performing their
own versions of the hula. Watching the movie, it was
clear that all on the trip really enjoyed themselves.
Curious descendants were bright-eyed and busy,
trying to see if their parents were in the movie.
Arlene Sato asked Jeanette Akamine (widow of
Bernard, Baker Co.) if she knew who the veteran was
dancing the hula so expressively. Mrs. Akamine
pointed to Arlene and said, “Your father!” Kudos to
Nealson Sato, Arlene’s husband, for combing through
hours and hours of footage to create a short version
(30 minutes) for all to enjoy.
The second movie was “Otoko wa Tsurai Yo” more
commonly referred to as “Tora-San”, starring Kiyoshi
Atsumi. There were 48 “Tora-San” movies released
between 1969 and 1995, making it a Guinness World
Record holder for the longest-running movie series
starring a single actor. All of the “Tora-San” movies
have the same plot, strong-headed but kind-hearted
Torajiro Kurama causes havoc when returns home to
his family in Tokyo after wandering from town to
town. With his comedic timing and faulty language,
Atsumi’s acting drew a lot of laughter from everyone
who watched the movie.
Thank you to Richard K.C. Ching of Toyo Movie
Time for providing the DVD and the background
information on “Tora-San” to us.
Thank you to all of the volunteers who helped with
the planning, set up Turner Hall, manned the check-in,
made juice and coffee, passed out bentos, ran the
projector, coordinated parking, and cleaned up after
the movie. Thank you also to those who donated
refreshments, door prizes and monetary gifts.
Hopefully, we will try to have future showings of
movies as the turn-out was very promising.

HEADQUARTERS CHAPTER NEWS
by Janice Sakoda , daughter of Gary K. Uchida
I hear that Jane Oki, widow of Albert Oki and
mother of our Secretary, John Oki, is currently in
rehab due to a recent fall. Please take care, Mrs. Oki,
and hope you’re back on your feet soon!
Our Christmas party again was a success, thanks in
large part to Arlene Sato and Gary Mizushima and
their crew, who took care of the food (shopping,
chopping, cooking and serving, cleaning). Once again
the home-cooked food was delicious and we’ve had
several comments how outstanding the soup was!
And I certainly need to acknowledge Skip Tomiyama
and her friends who provided the entertainment and
MC. Great job, as usual, Skip! Everyone loves
bingo; thank you, Warren Yamamoto, Rodney
Robello and Nealson Sato, for leading this game.
Much, much appreciation to the Shimogakis for
manning the Kids Craft Table. Ellie and Alvin did a
great job, and their grandsons also provided guidance
to the younger ones with the crafts. And, special
thanks to the Man in the Red Suit for showing up
during his busiest season of the year. He certainly
must love children to make the time to attend our
party. The saying, “Many hands make light work” is
so true and we appreciate all the helping hands!
Mahalo plenty!!!
I also want to send a thank you to those of you who
donated to our Christmas party, whether monetary or
bingo prizes or desserts. It is all very much
appreciated. We are especially humbled by two
special monetary donations; one is from Ethel
Teruya who has donated a monetary gift each year
for many, many years, even though she isn’t able to
attend our Christmas parties due to scheduling
conflicts. The second donation is from Matsue
Furushima, a good friend of the 100th and of Dot
Tamashiro. Even though she is not a 100th member
and attended our party as Dot Tamashiro’s guest, she
made a generous donation to Headquarters.
At our January 2016 meeting, the election of officers
took place and results are as follows: President:
Dorothy Tamashiro; Vice President: Elsie Oshita;
Secretary/Treasurer: Janice Sakoda. Yes, it’s the
same officers this year as the past few years. It was
decided at our meeting that an emphasis will be on
getting new members to attend our meetings and
hopefully, next year, we’ll have more people running
for office! Sons and Daughters, please consider
joining us! We really need new faces. And along
these lines, if you are interested in being notified of
future HQ events via email, please let me know
([email protected]). I will add you to my
email distribution list.
Our Spring Luncheon date has been set for
Wednesday, April 20. Please mark your calendars.
Time and place to be announced in the next PPP.
Our condolences to the family of Hiram Hagiwara,
HQ Chapter, from the Big Island, who passed away
December 29, 2015.
Congratulations to Pat Akimoto for officially being
GREAT! She became a great-grandmother last year
with the birth of Maya Akimoto in September, 2015.
Congratulations also to Maya’s grandparents, Brian
and Ada.
Congratulations also to Janice Trubitt’s daughter,
Julie, who recently got married (November 29, 2015)
in Cancun, Mexico. Julie lives in Boston where she’s
teaching Physics at English High School, which is the
oldest U.S. high school.
Please join us at our next HQ/Medics meeting on
Saturday, February 13, starting at 10:00 a.m.
CHARLIE CHAPTER NEWS by Arlene Sato
Akemashite omedetoo gozaimasu!
There were a total of 100 people from HQ/Med/C
Chapters that attended the Xmas party on Saturday,
December 19. A big mahalo to Gary Mizushima
who cooked a great dinner for us. Thank you to
David Sakoda who caught and donated so much tako
and Uhu fish which Gary deliciously prepared. Skip
Tomiyama decorated the tables with her creative
handmade decorations and provided the holiday
music. Thank you to the many people who donated
desserts, prizes, and money. We appreciate our
partners HQ/Med Chapters for joining with us again
and their help in planning this event.
Since we hold C Chapter meetings only on ODD
months, our next meeting will be on Saturday, March
26, 10:00am.

were 20 other guests. In addition to eleven widows and spouses were sons
and daughters who organized the gathering. Hiroshi Arisumi (232nd

BAKER CHAPTER by Ann Kabasawa
Happy Year of the Monkey to all Bakerites!
Let’s all wish a very happy 101th birthday to Tom
Tsubota who turned the big One-Puka-Puka-Plus-One in
January 2016. I learned from Clubhouse records that
Tom’s nickname is “Kewpie” which is no surprise as
Tom and Kewpie dolls
share the same big eyes
and chubby cheeks and are
loved by all. Happy
birthday Tom and many,
many more to come. (The
photo of Tom in uniform is
from our 100th website. It
was taken by elders living
in the Poston Relocation
Center in Arizona when
Tom participated in a
discussion there on
military experiences.)
We had a great turnout for the first ever combined Able
and Baker Christmas Party. Everyone enjoyed the
onolicious buffet lunch, the festive entertainment, the
keiki crafts and the visit from Santa. The highlight of the
day was wishing Sonsei Nakamura a happy 100th,
complete with a big birthday cake and spirited singing of
the “Happy Birthday Song”. Thank you to all of the
wonderful volunteers (too many to list) who made the
holidays so happy for our veterans and their spouses.
Thank you also to the generous donors who provided
snacks, dessert, door prizes and monetary donations.
Baker Chapter will meet on Saturday, February 6 at 1:00
pm at the Clubhouse. Hope to see you there!
ABLE ANTICS by Beverly Shiroma
Happy New Year to all!
It is with a saddened heart that I must announce
that we will no longer be holding monthly
meetings for Able Chapter due to low or even no
attendance in 2015. If there is a need for a
meeting, I will contact you as soon as possible
with the date and time.
Gary Hayakawa (nephew of Harry Hayakawa)
and I have been part of the 100th crew
volunteering alongside the soldiers of the
100th/442d Army Reserve who do yardwork
outside and cleaning inside at the Clubhouse every
month. Also joining us on a regular basis have
been President Lloyd Kitaoka and Descendants
Chapter President Bert Hamakado. I have been
told that Don Matsuda will be joining us too as he
enjoys working in the garden at home. While it is
hard work, it is a great opportunity to get to know
the new generation of the 100th as well as their
significant others and children who often come to
help out too. If you’d like to join the 100th crew,
please contact the Office to find out when the next
yardwork and clean up date will be (they are
usually on a Saturday starting at 8:00 am).
The 100th/442d soldiers really take the “For
Continuing Service” motto to heart, not only
coming to the Clubhouse to help out whenever
needed, but also cleaning the niches and
gravestones at Punchbowl every month as well
conducting graveside military honors for WWII
veterans of the 100th and 442nd. A new project
they hope to start this year is to place annual floral
tributes at the final resting places of 100th and
442nd veterans who did not leave behind any next
of kin. If you know of any veterans who may be
in that category, please let the Office know and
they will pass the information onto the reservists.
Thank you to Baker Chapter for allowing us to
join with them for the Christmas Party. It was
nice to see so many Able faces in the crowd and I
hope everyone had a great time. Mahalo to all in
the Able ‘ohana who volunteered to help, donated
door prizes or made monetary donations to our
Chapter.

PAYMENT OPTION FOR NON-MEMBERS
Non-members who opt to make an annual donation of
$25 to the Descendants Chapter will receive the 100th

FROM DA OFFICE by Jayne Hirata
Happy Year of the Red Monkey. In case you haven’t
heard, I am back working in the Office again. When I
first started volunteering here, my twins had just
started Kindergarten and my youngest was a newborn.
Now, the twins are seniors and my not-so-little one is
in sixth grade. Time really flies...
FOR CONTINUING SERVICE
Thank you to everyone who brought donations of
canned goods and non-perishable foods as part of our
annual Holiday Food Drive for the Hawaii Foodbank.
We delivered 64 items, weighing almost 30 pounds, to
the Foodbank Warehouse in January 2016.
Also in January 2016, the pool table and ping pong
table that seemed fated to be permanent fixtures in
Turner Hall, finally found a new home at the US Vets
Residential Housing site at Barber’s Point in
Kalaeloa. US Vets had hoped to pick up both items at
the Clubhouse as a Christmas surprise for the veterans
residing there but were unable to secure a means of
transporting the tables to their facility. Hearing of
this dilemma, descendant Gary Hayakawa of Able
Company and Descendants Chapter President Bert
Hamakado (both military veterans themselves)
stepped up and became a two man moving and
hauling company. After loading up the truck, Gary
made the long drive out to Kalaeloa to deliver a
belated Christmas surprise to the veterans.
Since the New Year, Bert and Gary have been
stopping by the Clubhouse once a week as volunteer
handymen so please give them a big “Doomo
Arigatoo” when you see them!
GFBNEC STUDENT CONTEST BEGINS
Submissions are being accepted from now until June
30, 2016 for the Go For Broke National Education
Center’s 2016 High School and College Student
Essay, Poetry and Video Contest. 16 winners will
receive cash prizes ($1,000 to each of the top six
winners) and the top 30 will receive two free tickets to
the Evening of Aloha Gala Dinner in the Fall.
For contest details, visit www.goforbroke.org or
contact Chris Brusatte at [email protected] or
(310)222-5711.
A meeting was held at the Clubhouse for GFBNEC
staff and Board members from Hawaii and the
Mainland which included
presentations by 100th
President Lloyd Kitaoka and
by Beau Tatsumura, Chris
Makinano and Jordan
Kagihiro of the 100th/442d. It
was like a family reunion for
me as Bill Seki (in photo on the
left), the Chairman of the
GFBNEC BOD, is my law
school classmate and kotonk calabash
brother (his family “adopted” me when
I lived in Los Angeles). Bill is also a
100th descendant as his dad, the late
Lloyd Seki, was a Dog Company
veteran. Many of you may have met
his mom, the late Chuckie Seki, at one
of the Las Vegas Mini-Reunions.
