Born in Runge, Texas, son and grandson of pio-
neers, George D. Battle (of pioneers, George D. Bat-
tle (1918—1989) grew up and worked on family
farms across central Texas. He had a ―green
thumb,‖ could ride and hunt, witch for water, and
use what he had around him to build, make, or fix
just about anything.
George graduated from high school in Kyle and
attended Southwest Texas State Teachers College.
He joined the Marines and was in Iceland when the
U.S. entered World War II. He sailed the Atlantic,
saw the tides in the Bay of Fundy, traveled by train
from New York to San Diego, and fought on just
about every Pacific island—including Bougainville,
Guam, and Iwo Jima. He came home a decorated
hero. Johan Sinclair became his bride in 1947, and
they had five children, all college graduates.
A simple walk in the country with George was
an experience. He shared which plants were safe to
eat, how to identify the crops growing in the fields,
where to look to spot wildlife, clouds and the
weather they would bring. He taught how to really
look and see things most people overlooked.
Family camping vacations across Texas and the
U.S. were always sprinkled with the right amounts
of geography, history, maps, swimming, fishing,
campfires, and practical jokes. He taught both
young and old valuable lessons of life without them
even realizing—because he made it fun. From the
beaches, to the mountains or deserts, George D. Bat-
tle loved life, his family, and Texas.

The Blanchard Family
Geography Scholarship
The Blanchard Family Geography Schol-
arship was created to honor the dedication and
commitment that the Blanchard Family holds
toward higher education. The Blanchard
Family traces its roots as far back as the
American Revolution when relatives served in
the Georgia Militia in the fight for our coun-
try’s independence.
It took another 200 years, however, for
Renee Denise Blanchard to become the first
college graduate in her family in 1976. Her
brother, John, was the second college gradu-
ate, and now almost all subsequent genera-
tions of the Blanchard Family are attending
and are expected to graduate with university
degrees. We owe our success in our careers
and our improved quality of life to the oppor-
tunities afforded us through higher education.
We would like to assist others, especially
those pursuing degrees, in attaining their
goals of higher education as well.

Frank and Ivy Boehm had a long and
strong interest in higher education. Even
though neither of them went to college, they
knew that the future of this country depended
on advanced education. They provided sup-

traveled widely and marveled at people and
places, thus their abiding interest in geography.
It is a fitting legacy to these two generous
people that there be a scholarship in their

Karen Brettschneider
Geography Scholarship
Karen was a graduate of the Texas State
Geography program in 1998 and worked as an
environmental planner for five years before her
untimely passing. This scholarship will extend
Karen’s legacy of environmental stewardship
to the next generation of geographers.
Karen Brettschneider was born in Monroe,
Louisiana on May 21, 1973. After completing
a bachelor’s degree in environmental science
from Texas Christian University, she attended
Texas State University to pursue a master’s
degree in resource and environmental studies.
While working on her graduate degree,
Karen shared her love of geography with other
students as she taught physical geography labs.
She also met and married her husband, a fel-
low geographer. After graduation, Karen
worked for the Houston-Galveston Area Coun-
cil, promoting and analyzing water quality
studies throughout thirteen counties surround-
ing the Houston area.
Karen’s passion for life was contagious,
bringing a positive energy to any situation.
Even during her lengthy struggle with breast
cancer, Karen continued to smile and laugh
and to be an inspiration to all of us about the
difference a positive attitude and determination
can be in making the most out of life. She con-
tinued to work on regional water quality pro-
jects and animals rescue even during the most
trying times of her cancer treatments.

In her first regular university teaching job in
the U.S. – at Keene State University (New Hamp-shire) – she spent the last year of her busy life
teaching journalism, presenting her research at sev-

toral dissertation. Throughout all that time, she found the energy to be a dedicated and loving
mother. Once her daughter was born, she turned to
motherhood with the same excitement and enthusi-asm that she had given to her journalistic projects
in India and to her teaching and research in the
U.S. Only two months after receiving her Ph.D. in

Gilbert White is an outstanding scientist of the hu-man environment. White went to Washington in 1934,
having completed all but the dissertation for a Ph D. de-gree from the University of Chicago. His task was to: as-
sist a committee of the Public Works Administration in preparing a comprehensive plan for the Mississippi Val-
ley. After returning from four years of refugee service with the American Friends Service Committee and a stint
at a college presidency, White, as professor of geography at the University of Chicago, launched a fifteen-year effort
to do the needed research to apply these principles. In a series of comprehensive, related studies, he and his stu-
dents sought to identify the various uses of the floodplains across the United States and the adjustments that make
possible their use. His effort to broaden the choice of adjustments has
been applied to other hazards: coastal flooding, coastal erosion, drought, earthquake, and hurricane. In an interna-
tional collaborative study that involved forty sites in 20 countries, it was further applied to avalanche, coastal ero-
sion, drought, earthquake, flood, snow, tropical cyclone, volcano, and wind. The approach was extended to techno-
logical hazards, beginning with studies of air pollution and then extended to hazards as diverse as automobiles, mer-
cury, nuclear power, and even nuclear war. While White was trained as a geographer and taught
geography for many years, his last university role was in an interdisciplinary research center, characteristic of an
evolving scientific effort that sought insight wherever it
may be found. White is a recipient of most of the major environ-
mental prizes: the NAS environmental award, the Sasa-kawa International Environment Prize, the Tyler Prize for
Environmental Achievement, and the Volvo Environment Prize as well as the awards of more than a dozen profes-
sional resource and environmental groups in the United States and the National Academy of Sciences has honored
him with its Public Welfare Medal-the NAS' most pres-tigious award for individuals.

honor the memory of Jacob ―Jake‖ Rakofsky.
He was a sophomore at Texas State, studying
Geography when he tragically lost his life. But
life was something Jake celebrated. He was

there was nothing, nor no one, more important
than you.‖ He valued his relationships and
held on to everyone who shared a part of his
life. It is only fitting that this scholarship be an
extension of that spirit that was Jacob Rakof-
sky and it continues to give, in perpetuity, to
students who shared Jake’s love for Geogra-

The Taetz Family
Scholarship
The Taetz Family Geography Scholar-
ship honors the family of Mark Taetz, who
graduated from Southwest Texas State Univer-
sity in 1984 with a Bachelor of Science degree
in Geography and Computer Science. Mark’s
family, including his grandparents Oliver and
Corinne (pictured above), his father Philip, his
mother Marilyn, and his brother Michael have
loved, inspired, challenged, and supported
Mark, while also sharing an appreciation for
the significance of place.

The Adriana Samantha
Visser Memorial
Geography Scholarship
Adriana Samantha Visser was born in Dallas,
Texas on August 1, 1976. By the age of two it was clear
to her parents, Mary and Sent, that she was not develop-
ing normally, but a diagnosis of Sanfilippo syndrome
was not made until Adriana was 5 years old. Sanfilippo is an inherited lysosomal sugar storage disease. From
the age of 5 Adriana regressed mentally and physically
until her death at age 12 on September 12, 1988. Her
body and brain eventually stopped working. Adriana’s
persistence in learning, while her body and mind were
rapidly failing, offers a remarkable insight into how in-
domitable the human will and the desire for life is. She
is survived by two younger, healthy siblings, Dirk and
Marieke.
Mary is an associate professor in sculpture and
Sent is a retired associate professor in geography. Their daughter’s illness was emotionally and physically drain-
ing, but they felt it was the right thing to continue their
careers, and to give meaning to their daughter’s life
through their work. They, therefore, wish to help moth-
ers pursue the dual careers of raising children and seek-
ing an academic degree. One of the things the Vissers
needed most while caring for Adriana was respite. They
hope that this award may provide assistance in this way,
or in some other way, to keep a mom in school, and/or
to raise the quality of her life and that of her children.

a college football coach. He led the Southwest

and 1982. He later coached at Texas Christian Uni-
versity and the University of Minnesota before re-

Jim Wacker was a legend in the coaching

on winning with class and integrity. He was a firm
