Parenting for Resilience
Term 1 Week 2 8 February, 2018
Dear Parents, Friends and Guardians,
Welcome to the start of the 2018 school year! The Christmas holiday period was a wonderful opportunity to spend time with family and relax before embarking upon another busy year! I know that the staff are also refreshed and enthusiastic to embark upon a new and exciting year of learning ahead.
We have 22 new Reception students whom we officially welcomed at our Welcome Mass last week. The Welcome Mass was facilitated by our new Parish Priest, Father Peter Zwanns; I take this opportunity to officially welcome Fr Peter to our community. We are delighted to have Fr Peter with us, he brings great wisdom, knowledge and youthful enthusiasm with him and we look forward to working with him in our community over the coming years. I wish to welcome to our community Jade in year 3 and the following new reception students who have officially commenced their educational journey at TWCS; Adam, Alexander, Alyssa, Aydin, Caden, Elizabeth, Eva, Eve, Gunocean, Gurnoor, Harry, Isaac, Ivy, Jack, Jaxson, Leo, Mayra, Mira, Primrose, Ralph, Sienna and Tejas.
Starting school is a significant milestone in a child’s life and each family digests this day differently. I noticed that this year there was much emotion exuding from our parents as they departed the school grounds leaving their precious cargo with us for the entire day and week! This is an enormous responsibility and I again thank you for entrusting us with your children. We do not take this responsibility lightly; we have mechanisms in place to ensure that every child matters and we take extra time to carefully observe our starting reception students in particular.
Additionally, I wish to welcome Nicole Musolino who has joined our staff as a Reception/Year 1 Teacher.

AGM (Annual General Meeting) /School Board Nominations/Strategic Plan: the AGM is scheduled for Wednesday 14 March
commencing at 6pm. This is a community event and you are all warmly invited to hear about the school and it’s progress.
Most importantly, we are seeking nominations for three positions on our School Board.
I wish to thank the following members whose tenures have expired, Jenni Carberry (6 years!), Karen Williams and Jackie
Stepien-Hulleman.
I have often heard from ‘new’ parents saying, that perhaps I am not eligible to nominate for these positions as I have just
commenced my time at TWCS. I can assure you, that is not the case and that your involvement in the school in this way is
extremely beneficial and most rewarding at any stage of your child’s journey. Therefore, if you wish to nominate yourself
for either one of these three, two year tenures and are able to commit to two meetings per term, then I ask that you forward
your nomination to [email protected] by no later than 9 March 2018.
Strategic planning workshop- Immediately following the AGM, I will facilitate a strategic planning process with our
community. I ask that you consider making this workshop a priority so that you can be involved in the discussions and
deliberations pertaining to the schools future development. The collection of the data accrued on this evening, coupled with
the data collected from the staff (from the same process) will yield a 5-year strategic plan.
For catering purposes for both events, I ask you to RSVP to Anna at [email protected]
Charter for Parents from the Federation of Parents & Friends Association – as an enrolling parent at a Catholic School all
parents are required to abide by the policies and conditions by which we operate. All Catholic School Parents are therefore
obliged to align themselves with the Charter for Parents. This charter articulates clearly defined processed and behaviours
that parents in Catholic schools are expected to adhere to.
It is unacceptable and a serious breach of the charter, for parents to talk with or remonstrate with any child on the school
grounds at any time. As stated above, if there is a matter of concern, which involves your child, you must direct these
concerns to the appropriate staff member at an appropriate time. Attached is the link for all parents to acquaint themselves
with this document: www.parentfederation.catholic.edu.au
Grievance Procedures- Like in all organisations we have specified grievance procedures in Catholic Schools. If you have a
concern pertaining to your child, the process that we ask that you employ at TWCS is to first make an appointment with your
child’s class teacher/or the teacher directly concerned. Leadership team members will also be available to listen to
grievances, however ultimately matters of difference or concern must be discussed with all parties involved. It is always best
to address matters as they arise, as managing retrospective, historical issues is extremely problematic.
Leadership Structure 2018- this year we have re-structured our leadership portfolios and re-named these positions as
Leaders of Learning. The following staff will make up our leadership team in 2018:
Matthew Harrison- APRIM / Special Education / sustainability projects
Jill Kehoe- Curriculum coach-consultant
Tom Atyeo – Relief teaching / science & digital technologies / extra curricula sports programs
Sophie Smith- Numeracy / NAPLAN
Paula Burns – English / EAL / PAT testing
Gina Margush – General curriculum policies / JP pedagogy / Data base
Each of these leaders has time out of their classrooms allocated to undertake these positions.

In 2016, the School Board approved the implementation of an application (App) for phones and tablets, which can be used
by parents to pay for school fees, camps, excursions, uniforms etc. To access this app, simply go to the App store to locate
QKr! by MasterCard. A full ‘How to guide’ is attached to this newsletter for your convenience. This year in 2018 all payments
will be paid for through this App (this includes, uniforms, subway lunch orders, excursions, sports carnivals etc.).
Please note: when paying school fees, you will need to nominate the amount you are paying as this app is a third party and
as such, it cannot be integrated with our finance system and thus does not identify your personal balance details.
Following this, you will be asked to register and account and to locate the school for which you wish to use the app for. We
anticipate that this will assist families who are already very busy to make payments in a quick and secure way. The App is
now operational and we trust that you enjoy the ease and convenience associated with this.
Please also note: we have contacted Villi’s to ask if they could accommodate their ordering process on this app, however
they do not have the resources to support an online ordering process and thus you will need to continue with the current
ordering process.
Subway lunch orders: due to the success of the online ordering Subway will also be available on Fridays. We thank John Barr
from Subway at Torrensville for supporting the online ordering and to accommodating our school on another day. Friday
lunch orders will begin on Friday 16 February.
OHSC – As you know, our OHSC facility is out sourced and run but Camp Australia. It is important to note, that several years
ago, the school did run its own OHSC program. However, like many small schools, that program was not financially viable and
was subsequently outsourced to Camp Australia. Additionally, because of families not having morning care available at TWCS,
we introduced an early 8am start to assist families; this too has a financial expense associated with it.
The fees and administrative structures aligned with this service are centralised and applied to the hundreds of OHSC centres
across Australia run by Camp Australia. Unfortunately, we do not have governance over fee increases of fee structures. I
understand that the costs have increased with this service and as a result are making this care facility potentially inaccessible.
I will continue to work with management on their pricing structure behind the scenes to try to alleviate future increases. In
the meantime, please feel free to write to Camp Australia expressing your thoughts.
RAN-EC Training- I am delighted to report that at least twelve parents have already completed their RAN-EC training online.
Please note, as per my email earlier in the week, all volunteers in Catholic schools are required to complete this online course
in order to be eligible to assist in our schools. The link for this training is: https://www.plink.sa.edu.au/pages/external-
dashboard.jsf?faces-redirect=true&dashboardId=6
Parenting corner- I have attached two articles from parenting expert Michael Grose for your perusal; they include, helping
children make a bright start to school and Parenting for Resilience. Each fortnight I will include articles or links to digital
mediums which are designed to assist in parenting your children, I hope that you find these useful!

Dear Families,
We have had a great start to the year finishing our first week with a Welcoming Mass lead by our new parish priest Fr Peter
Zwaans. We welcome Fr Peter and look forward to building a strong partnership with our Tenison Woods students, families
and the community.
Commissioning Blessing
As part of the Welcoming Mass, Fr Peter offered Staff, School Board and Parents and Friend’s representatives a
Commissioning Blessing. Those who were able to be present were asked to accept their commitment of service to the
Church and our school community throughout 2018.
Ash Wednesday
Ash Wednesday Mass for will be held in the Saint Aloysius Parish Church on Wednesday 14th February
at 9:00am.
During the Mass the students will receive ashes signed as a cross on their forehead. The Ashes come from
palms used on the previous Palm Sunday. The cross is to remind us that we are entering into the 40 day
season of Lent. Lent is a time of prayer, almsgiving and fasting (Matthew 6:1-4).
Unfortunately, our Year 5-7 students will be on their aquatics excursion on Wednesday and will not be able to attend the
Ash Wednesday Mass.
Fr Peter has kindly offered an Ashes Liturgy in the Saint Aloysius Parish Church on Thursday 15th February at 10:30am.
Project Compassion – For a Just Future
On Tuesday we attended the Western Region Caritas Project Compassion Launce
“For a Just Future,” at Nazareth College. Lily, William D, Tom and Angelina from
Year 6/7 accepted this leadership responsibility on behalf of their peers and were
great ambassadors for our school. Lily and William D received our Caritas school
candle and front office Project Compassion box for next week.
At the Ash Wednesday Mass and Thursday Ashes Liturgy we will distribute the class sets
of Project Compassion boxes and commence Crossways Religious Education units as we
support the students in their understanding of Lent and importance of the supporting our
neighbours through Project Compassion.
Enjoy the weekend,
Matthew Harrison

Benvenuti ad un nuovo anno scolastico!
(Welcome to a new school year!)
Our year has begun well - the students have settled in well to Italian classes and are extending their learning.
Many students will be exposed to a language other than English for the first time and I hope that, as their
learning evolves, they will enjoy participating in Italian lessons.
Learning a language enables students to have an appreciation of other cultures: their language, their belief
systems, their traditions and their history. It is against this backdrop that we will celebrate CARNEVALE on
Tuesday, 13 February. La Sfilata delle Maschere (Masks Parade) will begin at 9am in the Courtyard Area e
siete benvenuti a celebrare con noi tutti (and you are welcome to celebrate with us)! Any younger brothers
or sisters who wish to participate in la Sfilata may bring their mask with them on the day and join their
brother’s/sister’s class during la Sfilata.
During our Italian lessons children will be learning that, during Carnevale, Italy comes alive and, everywhere
you look, you can see beautiful colours, beautiful costumes and beautiful masks. This beauty will be
reflected in the masks that the children will be decorating (perhaps at home!) and I am certain you will be
delighted with la Sfilata!
A presto, Signora Ciocca
