Waterside Flow (boiler circuit)
The Vitodens 100-W is designed only for closed loop, forcedcirculation hot water heating systems.
Pressure drop (primary circuit) of Vitodens 100-W
Use standard friction loss method for pipe sizing.Observe boiler maximum and minimum flow rate limitations. If system flow rate exceedsboiler maximum flow rate (as stated on page 13) or if system flow rate is unknown, Viessmann stronglyrecommends the installation of a low-loss header. See page 13 for low-loss header information.
Heating Circuit Pumps
Recommended heating pumps with Vitodens 100-W, WB1B 26, 35:
HGrundfos 15-58 (3-speed)H Taco 00Ror equivalent
Refer to the graph above for the properwaterside boiler friction loss calculations.
Pump selection must be based on accuratesystem flow and pressure drop calculations(incl. DHW sizing).

A low-loss header must be used when the system flowrate exceeds the maximum or falls below the minimumflow rate of the Vitodens 100-W boiler. An alternativemethod may be used, such as primary secondary pipingusing closely spaced tees. A low-loss header offersadditional benefits not provided by a pair of closelyspaced tees. Viessmann strongly recommends andprefers the use of a low-loss header over closely spacedtees.
Please see page 13 for details.

DHW Production/Wall Mounting
10
Domestic Hot Water Production via DHW Storage Tank
Vitodens 100-W boilers can be used inconjunction with the stand-alone DHWstorage tanks offered by Viessmann (aseparate DHW controller should be fieldsupplied). All Viessmann DHW storagetanks sold in North America are available in“Vitosilver” finish only.
Size and select the DHW storage tank basedon the forecast DHW consumption of thebuilding in question.
For further technical information on DHWstorage tanks, see the Vitocell-V TechnicalData Manuals.
Wall Mounting Information
The Vitodens 100-W (model WB1B 26 and35) comes with a template, which allowsyou to easily mark the location of the screwsfor the mounting bracket and the location ofthe flue gas pipe on the wall (Viessmanncoaxial PPS vent system only).
The connection to the heating circuits mustbe made on site (installation fittings aresupplied in the Installation Fittings packagesupplied with the boiler).

Condensate Connection
Install the condensate drain pipe (Ø 7/8” /22mm) with a suitable gradient (min. 2.5%).Discharge condensate from the boiler intothe drainage system, either directly or (ifrequired) via a neutralization unit(accessory).
Condensate connection for Vitodens 100-WHmodel WB1B 26, 35
The condensate drain of the Vitodes 100-Wboiler is equipped with a built-in siphon trapin order to keep flue gases from beingdischarged via the condensate drain.
Discharge tubing
Pipe ventilation must take place betweenthe siphon trap and the neutralization unit (ifapplicable).
Condensate Drainage and Condensate Neutralization
The condensate formed both in thecondensing boiler and in the flue gas pipemust be discharged into the public sewagesystem in accordance with all applicablelocal regulations. The condensate producedby a gas-fired heating system has a pHvalue between 3 and 4.
Some local codes may require the use of aseparate neutralization unit to treat theaggressive and corrosive condensate. With a neutralization unit installed, allcondensate from the boiler and the flue gaspipe enters into the neutralization unitwhere it is treated and released into thepublic sewage system with a safe pH valueof above 6.5.
The use of neutralization granulate(performing the neutralizing process) isdependent on the operation of the heatingsystem. To determine the required refillamount, check granulate level several timesduring the first year of operation. In somecases one granulate fill may last an entireyear.
Contact Viessmann to order a neutralizationunit for the Vitodens 100-W boiler.See Viessmann Price List for orderinformation.
The condensate discharge outlet to thedrainage system connection must be clearlyvisible. It must be installed with a suitablegradient and provided with a stench trap.
If the condensate outlet of theVitodens 100-W boiler is lower than thedrain, a condensate pump must be used.
Only corrosion-resistant materials may beused for condensate drainage purposes (e.g.braided hose). Do not use galvanizedmaterials or materials containing copper forpiping, couplings etc. The condensate drainmust have a trap to prevent flue gasleakage.
Please note that other requirements mayapply depending on local regulations and/orproject-specific details.
It is advisable to contact your localwaterworks office (authority responsible forwaste water regulations) well beforecommencing with the installation of theneutralization unit in order to establishdetails of local regulations that apply.

How the Vitodens 100-W boileroperates...
The Vitodens 100-W boiler uses a premixcombustion system, which is designed todeliver a certain air-gas mixture to theburner for complete combustion. The gasis injected upstream of the blower. Theburner and heat exchanger are part of aforced-draft design. The benefits offorced-draft systems are lowercomponent temperatures, direct air-fuelconnection (premix) for improved mixing, and longer service life of the boiler due tomild to moderate ambient conditions. The MatriX cylinder burner, blower andthe combination gas valve are factorycalibrated and pre-adjusted. A pneumaticlink between combustion air and gasflows guarantees optimal boilerperformance at all firing rates. Blowerspeed is automatically increased ordecreased based on heat demand, thereby regulating the amount ofcombustion air drawn. The pneumatic linkbetween air and gas introduces therequired amount of gas for optimalcombustion to meet the current heatdemand, based on a linear relationshipbetween P air and P gas.

As a direct vent appliance, theVitodens 100-W may be installed for roomair independent operation (sealedcombustion) regardless of size and ventilationmethod of the room in which it is located. The Vitodens 100-W may be installed, forexample, in the main living area of a house,in non-ventilated utility rooms, cupboards, closets and alcoves with no clearancerequired from combustible materials, as wellas in attics with a direct outlet for the fluegas/fresh air system. Follow all local andnational codes.
Flue gas system
Viessmann coaxial PPS (Polypropylene -flame retardent) concentric flue gas/fresh airsystems and two-pipe stainless steel/CPVCsystems for room air independent operation(sealed combustion) and side wall ventingare tested to ANSI Z21.13 - CSA 4.9 -2007 standards and are certified togetherwith the Vitodens 100-W boiler as aconstructional unit. The Vitodens 100-Wboiler may also be vented vertically orhorizontally, using a metallic AL29-4C®special stainless steel, or non-metallic CPVCsingle-wall, room air dependent ventingsystem (UL/ULC listed for category IV).For a more detailed description of the directvent and single-wall vent system, pleaserefer to the Vitodens Venting SystemInstallation Instructions.
Flue gas temperature protection
Viessmann coaxial PPS (Polypropylene -flame retardent) flue pipes used for theVitodens 100-W are rated for max. flue gastemperatures of up to 248 °F/120 °C.Flue gas temperature protection is alsoincluded although the maximum permissibleflue gas temperature will not be exceeded inany operating condition or in the event ofmalfunctioning.
Low water cut-offA low water cut-off may be required bylocal codes. If the boiler is installed abovethe radiation level, a low water cut-offdevice of approved type must be installed inall instances. An approved low water cut-offdevice that meets government and localregulations must be provided by the heatingcontractor. Do not install an isolation valvebetween the boiler and the low watercut-off. The Vitodens 100-W boiler has abuilt-in flow switch, which may be acceptedby local codes in lieu of a low water cut-off.
System layout
H The max. boiler water temperature for ...–space heating is 180°F / 82°C.–DHW production is 172°F / 78°C.
To minimize distribution losses,Viessmann recommends that the heatingand domestic hot water systems be basedon a maximum boiler supply temperatureof 158 °F/70 °C.
H Due to the low return temperaturesrequired for gas condensing, avoid the useof mixing valves in the heating circuitwhenever possible. If mixing valves arerequired, e.g. for multi-circuit systems orunderfloor heating systems, only 3-waymixing valves may be used.Do not use 4-way mixing valves in asystem with condensing boilers.
Water connections
Vitodens 100-W boilers can be used in anyfully pumped hot water heating system.Minimum system pressure is 0.8 bar/12 psig.
Chemical corrosion protection productsCorrosion does not typically occur in sealedheating systems which have been correctlyinstalled and are correctly operated. Many manufacturers of plastic pipesrecommend the use of chemical additives. In this case, only commercially availablecorrosion protection products that havebeen approved for boilers with domestic hotwater heating via single-wall heatexchangers (instantaneous plate heatexchangers or DHW tanks) may be used.
Underfloor heating systems
For underfloor heating systems Viessmannrecommends the use of plastic tubing withan oxygen diffusion barrier in order toprevent the diffusion of oxygen throughtubing. If plastic tubing without an oxygendiffusion barrier is used in underfloorheating systems, Viessmann recommendsthat such systems be separated from theboiler with a heat exchanger.
Oxygen diffusion barrierunderfloor tubing
The boiler warranty does not cover leaksresulting from corrosion caused by the useof underfloor plastic tubing without anoxygen diffusion barrier. Such systems musthave the non-oxygen diffusion barrier tubingseparated from the boiler with a heatexchanger. Viessmann recommends the useof underfloor plastic tubing with an oxygendiffusion barrier.
Water quality
Treatment for boiler feed water should beconsidered in areas of known problems, such as where a high mineral content andhardness exist. In areas where freezingmight occur, an antifreeze may be added tothe system water to protect the system. Please adhere to the specifications given bythe antifreeze manufacturer. Do not useautomotive silicate based antifreeze. Pleaseobserve that an antifreeze/water mixturemay require a backflow preventer within theautomatic water feed and influencecomponents such as diaphragm expansiontanks, radiation, etc. Maximum antifreezecontent is 50% for the Vitodens 100-Wboiler. Do not use antifreeze other thanspecifically made for hot water heatingsystems. The system may also containcomponents which might be negativelyaffected by antifreeze. Check total systemfrequently when filled with antifreeze.Advise system operator/ultimate owner thatsystem is filled with a glycol mix.The heating contractor must provide aMSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for theantifreeze used to the systemoperator/ultimate owner.
Warranty
Our warranty does not cover damagesresulting from the following:– installation or service by unqualified andunlicensed personnel.
– attempting to perform any repair work onthe boiler other than that mentioned in theboiler literature.
– tampering with or attempting to readjustthe factory settings of the combinationgas valve
– leaks resulting from corrosion caused bythe use of underfloor plastic tubingwithout an oxygen diffusion barrier.
