Executive Summary
Tech & Digital Salary Survey - Brisbane 2019/2020
Despite the election causing some short-lived uncertainty, the past financial year has been met with increased market confidence across most areas in the IT industry. Although, there have been some continued challenges in the candidate-short Development space, with the added complexity of tech advancements meaning that not all candidates have exposure to the latest versions/languages. Other observations to note are the increased interest from corporate clients who are looking to hire consultants with advisory backgrounds (to move in-house), and the decrease in Infrastructure roles as the popularity of Cloud/DevOps rises.
On the candidate front, there has been very little change over the last 12 months. There doesn’t seem to be any increase or decrease in candidate numbers, with their expectations also remaining unchanged. While the previous financial year saw more people relocating to Brisbane from cities like Sydney and Melbourne (due to increasing house prices down south), this surge in arrivals seems to have slowed considerably.
In terms of in-demand skills, Python, Data Science and Azure Public Cloud/Data Lake, along with JavaScript, are the priority. Most often, employers are looking for skilled individuals, or mid-level candidates. Mid-level candidates do provide a challenge though, due to a large proportion who are reluctant to move on while still experiencing growth in current environments. In regard to training, only 50% of Brisbane organisations appear to be open to training new employees, which signals a preference for people that can come in and hit the ground running.
Looking ahead, we suspect salaries and contract rates will remain steady again this year. However, rather than traditional contracts, a move to fixed-term permanent roles (which is becoming more popular) would suggest the market isn’t as tight as it once was. This will likely drive contract rates down, with the exception of some areas, such as .NET. Coming back to the Development space, we’re expecting a continued candidate short market, with the number of Development roles outstripping the supply of available talent across the board.
What should employers take away from this? A lot of the insights discussed above highlight the need to act quickly on talent. When briefing recruiters, businesses should also be considering a number of factors, including benefits, growth/learning opportunities, internal culture, as well as team structure/management style.
