From the Project Manager - Lloyd Niccol
Thank you for your interest in providing sponsorship and
support to Team UOW Australia and our entry in the Solar
Decathlon China 2013 competition.
The Solar Decathlon competition, often described as the
‘Energy Olympics’, is the largest sustainable building
research and innovation competition in the world, with
teams designing, building and operating net-zero energy,
solar powered houses. Teams must then transport their
houses to Datong, China and rebuild them within 10 days,
ready for the arrival of hundreds of thousands of visitors!
Team UOW Australia is excited to be the first and only
Australian team to be chosen to compete at a Solar
Decathlon. Our team is made up of a diverse group of
passionate students from the University of Wollongong
and TAFE Illawarra. With an advisory group of industry
professionals and academics, we are developing a world-
class house called the ‘Illawarra Flame’.
The Illawarra Flame is a unique and exciting concept.
It is the first design in the history of the competition to
address the imperative of upgrading our existing housing
Our project is about transforming existing houses using retrofit technology, to create sustainable, affordable and attractive homes for our future.
This concept is represented through the unique, seasonal transformation of the Illawarra Flame tree, as it renews itself, blossoming into a thing of beauty.
The Illawarra Flame tree is intimately tied to the University of Wollongong, with the crest drawing on its connections to this stunning natural asset.

stock. With less than two per cent of Australia’s housing
replaced each year, a staggering 60 per cent of our current
homes will still exist in 2050. By seeking to improve the
performance of these houses we can make an immediate
and positive environmental impact.
Our design is a revolutionary transformation of the
traditional Aussie ‘fibro’ house. We are demonstrating and
providing a benchmark for transforming our existing houses
into stylish, affordable and sustainable homes for the future.
The Solar Decathlon competition is more than just a high
profile international competition. It is also an enormously
popular public event. With entries from over 20 universities
and a dozen countries, the Solar Decathlon provides
an unrivalled opportunity to drive global change by
showcasing advanced sustainable building technologies,
innovative ideas and dynamic thinking to hundreds of
thousands of visitors on the world stage.
On behalf of Team UOW Australia, I would like to invite
you to become part of our team and join our journey in
transforming our houses into sustainable homes.

Our Sponsorship Model
The Team UOW Australia sponsorship model has five tiers metaphorically
tied to our project inspiration - the iconic Illawarra Flame tree.
The Illawarra Flame tree is famous for its stunning ‘crown’ of ‘red flame

that provides immense support from the ground up.
