Listening vocabulary
A listening Lesson
A listening lesson can be effective, leading to
a satisfactory outcome if
1.The listening objective is clear
2.A suitable listening text is selected and
3.An achievable task is built around it.
Selecting A listening task
1 Defining the objective.
The two most important aspects of task selection are
2 Ascertaining the difficulty level of the listening task
Defining Objective
Defining Objective
Perception Activity
1. Identifying & Discriminating Sounds & Syllables in words.
2. Identifying reduced forms in connected/fast Speech
3. Recognizing intonation patterns
Comprehension of information
1. Orientation –determining the kind of text they are listening to (a story, a letter, a description)
2. Understanding the meaning of a direction and instruction.
3. Understanding the gist
4. Understanding the details-example-train timings ,parts of body etc
5. Retelling and replicating
Ascertaining the difficulty level of the text book
Is vocabulary largely within the child’s listening vocabulary?
Are the learner familiar with the topic?
How the text is organized?(A narrative with sequence of ideas or a
description with main points and details or a comparison)
Is the text simple and short and with minimum redundancy for the
children to process easily
Are there a limited number of things or persons involved?
Are the speakers in a conversation markedly different for easy
discrimination?(a child and an adult with marked differences in voice
,or a man or a woman)
Is there any kind of visual support along with the task ?(a sketch,a
map,a picture or diagrams to assist comprehension)
Is the text short enough to retain the attention of the learners?
Stages of a Listening Lesson
1 Pre-listening Activities
2 While-listening Activities
3 Post-listening Activities
Points to ponder before the listening Lesson
The atmosphere is relaxed and the seating is informal
and comfortable
Ample space to be created for in case of total physical
response
Learners with hearing loss are placed in front or close
to the teacher
Learners have a real purpose for listening
Learners are prepared for the listening activity
Points to ponder before the listening Lesson
The content of the material suits the interests and
maturity of the learners.
The teacher speaks clearly, naturally and watches out
for any signs of fatigue or lack of interest
There are ample opportunities for learners to
participate like repeating phrases.
At the end of the listening experience, learners are
encouraged to give their individual responses.
Many activities are done in a collaborative manner to
make them stress free for the learners who are not so
confident.
Points to ponder before the listening LessonIf the teacher is doing an activity on comprehension take
following into consideration
Asking the learners to attempt the task only when they
hear it the second time.
If required ,playing the CD again or read again for
learners to complete the portions they were unable to
do in the first attemptReading aloud the relevant portions which learners
were unable to comprehend when played on the audio
equipment earlier.
Listen and do or listen and Draw, repeating the
sentences and pausing, waiting for the learner to
complete the
