-- also gave United States the right to intervene in Cuan affairs.

PANAMA CANAL

Roosevelt supported a rebellion, Panama declared its independence, and the US recognized the Republic of Panama.

Conditions were harsh and there were major labor shortages.

Malaria struck the entire workforce in the first month of construction.

Roosevelt Corollary- US pledged to use armed forces to prevent any European country from seizing Dominican territory.

-- this brought more stability to the region and helped keep other nations out.

DOLLARY DIPLOMACY- a policy promoting American economic interests in other countries using that economic power to achieve American policy goals.

Porfirio Diaz was a dictator in Mexico from 1877-1910

When he ran for reelection he jailed his opponent FRANCISCO MADERO

When Francisco Madero was released from jail he fled over the border to Texas.

- Declared himself president of Mexico and called for a revolution.

In the South – Emiliano Zapata and his army of Native American peasants – known as Zapatistas; wanted land to be returned to the native peoples.

Meanwhile, in northern Mexico, FRANCISCO “PANCHO” VILLA led a large scale revolt against Diaz.

In May 1911- Diaz resigned and went into exile in France.
