8th Annual Casa Maria Valentine’s Day Coffee and Sugar Collection
FEBRUARY 4th!!
The Missions/Social Concerns Committee is asking for donations of coffee, sugar,
liquid hand soap and paper towels for Casa Maria Soup Kitchen.
Last year we collected 199 pounds of coffee and 280 pounds of sugar, 114 rolls of
paper towels and 38 bottles of hand soap.
CAN WE TOP THAT THIS YEAR?
Let’s do our best to provide these gifts of love to several hundred homeless brothers
and sisters who seek assistance at Casa Maria each morning.
Your donations will be collected outside of the Sanctuary, this Sunday, February 4th .
Thank you for being friends of those who are served by Casa Maria Soup Kitchen.
THE INN PROJECT NEEDS PERSONAL HYGIENE SUPPLIES!
It has been brought to our attention that The Inn Project shelter at First UMC needs personal hygiene
supplies. If you would like to donate items, there is a bin for them in the church office or give them to
Barb Reuter or Mary Jo Floyd. (Do not place them in the bin on the patio.)

Our Sermon Series-“Bread, Bath and Beyond runs through Sunday, Feb. 11th.
The new year always brings opportunity to move beyond our limitations...to find new beginnings and be
better than we were before. We use this cultural word-play in our series title to remember that the most basic
transforming experiences of our faith-communion and baptisms-are the starting points for life “beyond” our
limitations. Let’s make this year one of amazing transformations-for our lives, for our community, for
our world!

2017 Flea Market Report
Thanks to almost all of you, we had another great Flea Market year, netting slightly over $100,000 after deducting operating expenses.
Below is a summary of “Where The Money Went”. Your membership at Desert Skies and your willingness to give of your time, ener-
gy and money are what makes this possible.
First, what we’ve categorized as “Church Support”. Because it takes practically the entire membership plus many, many friends, to
put the sale on; the Flea Market funds many DSUMC entities. Here is a listing of the major ones:
Missions
UMW, UMM & UMWF
Desert Skies Foundation
The Patio Project
Music
The Eagle Scout Project
Assist Trustees in landscape maintenance
Africa University scholarships
Aid to Beneficiary portion of UMC apportionments
These most direct Church related expenditures totaled about $50,000; or half the net.
The remaining $50,000 is being distributed to benefit the following outreach opportunities:
Shriner’s Children’s Hospital Transportation Fund
Tucson Community Food Bank (snack pack program)
The Dictionary Project (for 3rd graders) in partnership with the Rincon Rotary Club
The INN Project, to help care for and reunite immigrant families
Southern Arizona Children’s Advocacy Center
The Care Portal (help children aging out of Foster Care)
Dragonfly Home for Families (aid to homeless families)
Youth on Their Own
Haiti Methodist Mission and Orphanage
Answers for Life Pregnancy Center
Teen Challenge
Wesley Youth Fellowship (U of A)
Sixth Street Gym (aid for troubled youth)
School supplies for elementary schools in low-income areas of Tucson
Please note that each year, in addition to the financial aid detailed above, we give several thousand dollars worth of
furniture, appliances, and practically everything else to extremely needy people in the Tucson area.
Congratulations and thanks to all for a wonderful job.

LENTEN STUDIES Lent is a great time to go deeper in discipleship and connection to Christ. This Lent, Adult Spiritual Formation, is offering a few ways to make that connection: Gifts of the Dark Woods, The Last Days of Jesus and Centering Prayer. Gifts of the Dark Woods will supplement the worship series presented during Lent. A guidebook for spirituality in an uncertain world. Though commonly understood as a place to be feared and avoided, the Dark Wood is the surest place to meet God. It is a place where you may feel uncertain, empty, lost, tempted, and alone. Yet these feelings - these gifts of the Dark Wood - can be your greatest assets on your journey. The Last Days of Jesus takes you from Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem to His glorious resurrection. This series provides an overview of 6 major events surrounding Jesus' Death and Resurrection! Dig deeper into the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus by beginning each session in Israel showing key places, such as the Garden of Gethsemane, a rolling stone tomb, Mount of Olives, and more. Featuring beautiful retellings, solid overviews, and incredible cultural insights from top Bible scholars followed with discussion and personal insights. You are invited on a journey this Lent to go deeper and find joy in a closer connection to Jesus. Check the connection card on Sundays to sign up. Sundays-8:30 am in Room # 5-The Last Days Of Jesus Mondays-10:30 am at Connie Kraska’s Home (S. Melpomene & 22nd St.)-Gifts of the Dark Wood Wednesdays-5:30 pm at the Baggins in Vail-Gifts of the Dark Wood Wednesdays-5:30 pm in the Fellowship Hall (with a simple supper)-The Last Days of Jesus

12th grade on February 17-18th. Aside from the possibility of making new friends
and if there is snow some great outdoor activities, the camp’s lead speaker and
worship leader is Wayne Kerr (many of you from Youth 2015 will remember him) for
some spiritual refreshment and inspiration. We will be taking the van (Houghton cam-
pus) 6 am on Saturday and be back on Sunday at dinner time so as not to interrupt getting back to school on
Monday. Registration is online: https://www.minguswintercamp.org/ Contact Rev. Matt if you need partial or
full scholarship (602-628-0137, text or call). This will literally be one of those mountain top experiences both
