Dear School Community,

significant changes. Please be sure to
keep your students at home if they
are unwell, we provide the same
instruction to staff members as we
know it is Winter and an increased
chance that individuals will generally

In regards to College staffing, we
continue to see exciting
developments, including the

Term 3, Week 4
Due to COVID-19 we are unable to hold the subject
selection information evening for year 8 parents
and students.
As a result we will make available the subject
selection information booklet via email, the school
website, parent portal and the year 8 student
Edmodo group.
Please take time to read through carefully the
information in the booklet and discuss elective
subject preferences with your child.
Students must study over year 9 and 10 two
electives from section one-200 hour electives.
Students must also study one VIBE elective course
in year 9 and one VIBE elective course in year 10
from section two—100 hour various interest based
electives (VIBE).
Students will be asked to submit their preferences
for the 200 hour and one 100 hour elective, in order
of priority, during week 6 of term 3, via edval
webchoice by logging onto https://
my.edval.education, with their unique webcode,
that will be emailed to all students school email
accounts. This is the same system we use for sport
choices and all students are familiar with how to
use this platform.
Students will be given an information session at
school, led by the 9/10 Deputy Principal, during
week 5 in core class groups, outlining NESA
requirements, core subjects, elective requirements,
elective options and the webchoice process.
Once all students have entered their preferences
the senior executive will make decisions on which
electives will or won’t run. This is a lengthy process
and driven by student preferences, course
popularity and staff availability.
A PowerPoint shown to students will be emailed to
all parents. Furthermore, to help students make
their choice of a VIBE course we have created
short video introductions for each VIBE elective on
offer. Click on the link to access. http://bit.ly/

Write a Book in a Day 2020
In Week 1 of this term we had over 40 students participate in the annual Write a Book in a Day competition. Students spent 12 hours in our school library writing and illustrating books from scratch! Not only is it a fun, challenging and collaborative day for our students, all digital stories are distributed to children in hospitals across Australia. This year we had stories about run away giraffes, mermaids and even runaway pigs on train.
In addition to writing their books, the student have also fundraised money for the Kids Cancer Project. So far our school has raised $2340!
SSC Leichhardt is proud to be part of such an amazing initiative again and we are so proud of our students who chose to participate!
If you would like to support any of our 6 teams you can find links to their fundraising pages below:

Support Report
Term 3 Update This term has been rather eventful already with three new students joining us in the support unit AND a new permanent member of staff! It is with great pleasure that we welcome the fabulous Ms Michelle Genci to our little team as well as superstar students Vandy, Natalie and Greg!
“My name is Ms Genci and I am very excited to say that I am the new addition to the Support Faculty. I am full of energy and love to laugh and learn with my students. I believe strongly in the idea of treating everyone with kindness and praising those who go above and beyond to help others. I believe we have many students at our school who uphold these values which makes it a huge pleasure to be a part of this school community. Thank you for your warm welcome! "

The C Class are studying a modified mainstream English unit where their driving question will be: “how can I make an old story new again”? They recently created their own fairy tale characters and are now working on a setting and plot.
Meanwhile, the L Class are getting deep into Shakespeare’s Macbeth with Ms Genci. I think we have some real thespians on our hands here!
The E Class have been learning about Engineering and Bridges with Ms Khedoori. They were given the task to build a straw bridge with 25 straws and masking tape. In groups, they selected what type of bridge they were going to make and adjust them to strengthen them. They then had to count and work out the weights their bridge could support. They were surprised how much weight they could hold!
And in digital technologies with Ms Cairns this semester, the E Class will be using the micro:bits to code and create some amazing projects.
The I Class are using concrete materials in maths with Ms Robinson to support their learning.
And in food tech with Ms Ahie, they made Mie Goreng!
The C Class have been busy and productive with Ms O’Sullivan in technology too! Last term they learned how to indigo tie dye cotton material, and used this material to make a textile phone stand. They learned how to use the sewing machine and hand sewing techniques to complete their phone stand. This term the students completed a STEM challenge of building a raft to help the gingerbread man cross the river. They used a range of materials such as paddle pop sticks, glue, foil, cardboard and skewers.
Community Participation Due to COVID-19 restrictions we have had to adapt our community participation program this term, but continue to focus on developing students’ social skills through school-based activities. Here is a report written by Felix in year 8:
“Its where we all come together and do an activity. Sometimes we play outdoor games and sometimes we do indoor games. I like it because I get to see Antony who is in another class. I also get food afterwards. It’s fun to see others! Being socially chill is a good skill! Getting exercise is good too!”
Well said Felix! We hope that everything will get back to normal soon so that we can go on excursions again and resume our usual programs. In the meantime, we are looking at other options such as school-based work experience, cooking, wellbeing programs etc. so watch this space!
Have Your Say on the Future of Callan Park
Students are invited to take part in an upcoming consultation event for the development of
a Landscape Structure Plan (LSP) for Callan Park, in Rozelle. The LSP is a high-level
conceptual plan to guide Callan Park’s revitalisation as an iconic urban parkland in ways
that celebrate the park’s unique heritage and waterfront location.
An important part of this consultation is hearing the voices of young people in the area to
inform the future design of Callan Park!
Students are invited to visit the project’s website, where they can provide comments, ideas
and feedback through our interactive map and 10-minute survey, or they can participate in
pop-up consultation activities held in the park from Saturday 8 August to Saturday 22
If you would like further information please do not hesitate to
