Independence is a way of life which involves the spirit of being able to make decisions for oneself. Independence has different connotations for different people. But, in our own small ways, we try to imbibe the spirit of independence in whatever we do.
thIndia achieved its independence on 15 August 1947 from centuries of colonial rule. Independence in India was achieved predominantly through non-violent struggle by Mahatma Gandhi. Then, independence meant freedom on non-dependence on external bodies/agencies. In Sanskrit it translated to ‘Swatantrata’. The theme of this joint bulletin is to imbibe the spirit of independent thoughts and convert them into concrete actions.
Rotary and Rotaract are organisations which are working day in and day out to help us achieve fruits of our independence. Each of our countries has had a history of struggle until it has realised true emancipation of the masses. India got it 64 years ago, a few nations got it later and many more are still at the verge of achieving independence. The whole Indian Subcontinent has a long history of struggle for independence. But, today we are able to reap the benefits of the struggles of our fore fathers. Rotary strives hard within countries to make sure that the countries benefit from the contribution and efforts of people within their nations, so that the true spirit of independence is achieved particularly through eradication of Polio.
In our own small ways, we observe that independence is a natural quality innate in human beings. Observe a toddler who has started learning to walk. If you go near and try to provide assistance, the child pushes the helping hand away and tries to walk on its own. Our day-to-day lives are filled with such examples. We can thus draw to a conclusion that the spirit of self-reliance and determination is a natural attribute of mankind.
We must thus ensure that we imbibe, preserve and encourage this spirit of independent thought. Let us collectively reach within our countries and community and embrace humanity for the benefit of all.

Presidents Message
It is a honour for me to pen this message for ‘Swatantra’ a joint bulletin alongwith Rotaract Clubs of Colombo West, Himalaya Patan, Latur and Metropolitan Dhaka. The Club deems it a privilege to interact with Rotaractors from various nations. The true spirit of the Rotary Movement is being achieved by initiatives like this. My sincere thanks to all clubs who sent their details on time and made this bulletin possible. Finally I would thank my Club members for their support. Following the District Theme of R.I. District 3230 ‘Celebrating Differences’ I hope that this bulletin helps in enjoying the differences we share.
Here’s hoping that initiatives like this continue and help us to improve Rotaraction across borders.Yours in Rotaract!!!

While the Club is preparing for its 37th presidential installation, it gives Rotaract Club of Colombo West a great pleasure in sending a message to the newsletter 'Swatantra' on account of Independence Day in India. The Club is one of the oldest clubs in Sri Lanka; chartered on 10 August 1973 the Club has an illustrious history of over 30 years of community service to the island nation. The club can also take pride in having a number of members elected as District Officials who have gone on to serve the Rotaract Movement with great distinction. With the Rotaract District Theme of District 3220 – Sri Lanka, “Live your Passion Live Rotaract”, Rtr.Pres. Neluni Karunaratne wishes all for a successful Rotaract Year 2011-12
It's immense pleasure to express my views in this joint bulletin 'Swatantra' . First I would like to wish all the fellow Indian Rotaractors a very Happy Independence Day. At the Club level projects are on the way and all the members despite of busy schedule are participating in large numbers for all project. We are trying to improve on our joint projects worldwide and this bulletin is a step in the right direction for us. I am glad that this has already started with friendship day celebration and this joint bulletin is giving it the continuation. We are very happy to be a part of this project and would like to thank you for making us a part of it. I hope we would continue working together in the future as well. JAYA ROTARACT !! Rtr. Pres. Dear friends I am thankful for faithful confidence on me by providing the chance to share our thought for joint bulletin 'Swatantra'. As Rotaractors, let us make a conscious effort to carry Rotaract wherever we may go. Rotary is depending on us, theRotaractors, to continue flying the flag of Rotary high. Let us not forget the 2011-2012 Rotary International theme, “Reach with to Embrace Humanity” as we interact with our fellow Rotaractors not just within our country and district but internationally. Despite our geographic location, ideologies or culture, we have one commonality, to serve mankind in truth and fairness while creating goodwill and better friendships, which in turn will be beneficial to all concerned. We hope our district theme of “V be the change” is realised this year through our actions!
