Dear Friends,On behalf of the Board of Directors and Staff of Susan G. Komen
Northeast Ohio, I am proud to share our 2017 Annual Report and thank
you for generously supporting our work. Your generosity provides the
necessary funds for life-saving services for women and men in the 22
counties that comprise the Northeast Ohio service area, many of whom
are uninsured or underinsured and not able to access care. In the past
five years, Komen Northeast Ohio has invested $3.5 million to help
47,357 individuals to access 112,381 services including mammograms,
diagnostics, navigation, transportation and survivor support services.
Your contributions demonstrate your desire to make our community a
better place to live. For that, we thank you.
Every year, almost 41,000 people die from breast cancer in the United
States. Komen’s “Big Bold Goal” is to reduce this number by half by the
year 2026. At Komen Northeast Ohio, we believe even one person dying
from this disease is unacceptable.
Did you know that Ohio ranks 4th in breast cancer mortality in the USA?
That means more people are dying from breast cancer in our state than
almost anywhere else in the country. That, too, is unacceptable.
Your support helps us address disparities in care and provides services
to get people care earlier in the disease process.
Thank you for joining us in the battle against breast cancer and for
assisting survivors and metastatic patients in our community. Together,
we are making a difference.
With deepest gratitude,
Sean W. Shacklett, MPA

2017 was a great year for Komen Northeast
Ohio’s mission work. We hosted our 13th
annual breast cancer survivor symposium
and began planning for the first ever
metastatic breast cancer conference in Ohio.
Our large community grantees provided
more than 7,000 services and we brought
back our small grants program after a five
year hiatus to expand our impact.
2017 also brought the passage of landmark
legislation in the state of Ohio. The four Ohio
Affiliates of Susan G. Komen led a coalition
of experts, including the American Cancer
Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN)
and Pfizer, to get more free mammograms,
diagnostic, and treatment services for
thousands of Ohio women by modernizing
eligibility for Ohio’s Breast and Cervical
Cancer Project (BCCP). This legislation
increases income level eligibility, expands
age restrictions to include mammograms
and services for women under the age of 40,
and provides co-pay/deductible assistance
for women who are underinsured.
In addition, the updated BCCP eligibility
makes great strides in providing healthcare
navigation services to uninsured, low-
income, and/or underserved populations,
helping clients understand test results and
overcome barriers such as reading services
and transportation assistance. In this way,
the BCCP also guides women in utilization of
existing benefits and access to insurance for
other healthcare needs, including diabetes,
heart disease, etc.
With earlier prevention and treatment
provided to these underinsured populations,
this ultimately saves the state taxpayer,
health providers, and health insurers money.
It’s a solid, common-sense approach to
helping curtail breast and cervical cancer
rates and linking these women to more
sustainable healthcare in the future, making
it an efficient and effective investment.

With more than 140 events across the globe,
Race for the Cure involves more than
850,000 participants and volunteers who
have helped to raise more than $2 billion
since its inception while educating and
honoring those affected by breast cancer.
Up to 75 percent of funds raised stay in
the local communities to fund navigation,
screening and treatment programs while
25 percent of the net proceeds goes
towards Komen’s national research program.
The 2017 Cleveland Race for the Cure
celebrated its 24th Year on August 26 in
downtown Cleveland at Malls B & C and our
supporters raised more than $250,000!
We could not have achieved this goal
without our volunteers and Cleveland
Leadership Committee, led by our
Co-Chairs Jamie Jones & John Kalbouridis.
The Akron Race for the Cure took place
on October 22 and drew nearly 1,000
supporters to Canal Park. The Akron
Leadership Committee was led by Jane
Ladd and Jennifer Rasmussen and helped
to raise over $60,000!

Volunteer Spotlight
PHIL KENDEL
Phil has been a volunteer for the Race for
about 21 years now, starting as a friend of a
Zeta fraternity sister, helping out wherever and
whenever she asked. His friend left the area but
Phil stayed on and became adopted by a group
of Komen volunteers. So begins the story.
Phil is one of the few long-term male volunteers.
He works behind the scenes and never asks to
be acknowledged or rewarded. He takes the day
before the Race off from work to help set up at
Race site.
You can find Phil doing the heavy lifting—no job is
too big or too small, too heavy or too dirty for Phil.
He works on Race day doing WHATEVER
anyone asks him to do. He is there from 4 am
until the last scrap of paper and the last water
bottle top is picked up off the ground. He is
always there when someone needs something
lifted or carried.
He always has a smile on his face and loves
supporting Komen and assisting whenever
needed. You can’t help but smile when you are
around Phil because of his sense of humor and
his warm heart.
Phil also volunteers for Komen events outside
of the Race. He helps set-up / tear-down and
staff the booth at the Auto Show, closing almost
every night.
Phil is a wonderful volunteer and is always there
to lend a hand whenever needed. And at the
end of the day he always says “What’s next?
Where is the next event?”
Volley for the Cure™ was started by two friends in
2006 to bring awareness to breast cancer. A Volley
for the Cure™ match is designated as an awareness
and fundraising event. The goal is to pack the stands
with Pink! Players, coaches, parents and schools are
encouraged to get involved.
Fundraising generated through a Volley for the Cure™
event is donated to the local Susan G. Komen Affiliate,
working to save lives and end breast cancer forever
by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and
energizing science to find the cures.
SOLON HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEY FOR THE CURE:
The Solon Schools paint the gyms and playing
fields pink for a week in the fall every year to bring
awareness and raise funds for the Komen Northeast
Ohio to support the women of our community!
The annual Comets for a Cure Week is focused
around four home athletic contests – football,
volleyball and boys and girls soccer – as well as
a community-building event sponsored by the
Solon High School chapter of SADD: A Staff Dunk
Tank. On the day of the dunk tank event, teachers,
administrators and other SHS staff members head
into the tank to be dunked based on those who
received the most student “votes.” Students vote
for the teachers and staff members they most want
to see dunked by donating $1 per vote during their
lunch periods the week prior to the event.
It truly is inspiring that this school district comes
together to help the women of Northeast Ohio.
We want to give Solon Schools a huge thank you.
Congratulations for allowing students to find the joy
in philanthropy at such a young age.
In 2017 they raised $14,000!
Volley for The Cure Rally for The Cure
Rally for the Cure is a grassroots program using
golf, tennis and other social sports to raise money
for Susan G. Komen. Since 1996, more than 35,000
volunteer Ambassadors have helped Komen and
our nationwide Affiliates fund life-saving community
breast cancer programs and research to find cures
for breast cancer. These passionate, dedicated
Ambassadors have also helped educate more than
2 million people about their breast health and breast
cancer. Rally is helping to advance Komen’s Big Bold
Goal to reduce current breast cancer deaths by 50
percent in the U.S. by 2026. Rally ambassadors raised
over $20,000 for Komen Northeast Ohio in 2017.
