Surface Mount Tantalum CapacitorsTPS Series Tantalum Low ESR Capacitors
The TP S (Ta nta lum for P ow er S upplies ) surfa ce mo unt
products have inherently low ESR (equivalent series
resistance) and is capable of higher r ipple current ,
handling, producing lower ripple voltages, less power
and heat dissipation than standard product for the most
efficient use of circuit power.
TP S has been d esigned, ma nufac tured, a nd preco ndi-
tioned for optimum performance in typical power supply
environments. By combining the latest improvements in
tantalum powder technology, improved manufacturing
processes, and applica t ion specif ic precondit ioning
tests, AVX is able to provide a technologically superior
a l ternat ive to standard molded or conformal coatedtantalum capacitors.

Introduction
Tanta lum ca pac itors a re ma nufac tured from a pow der of
pure ta ntalum meta l. The typica l particle size is b etw een 2
and 10 m.
4000FV 10000FV 20000FV The pow der is c ompress ed unde r high press ure a round a
Tanta lum w ire to form a pe llet. The rise r wire is the a nod e
connection to the capacitor.
This is sub se q uently va cuum s intered a t high te mperature
(typica lly 1500 - 2000 C). This he lps to drive off any impuri-
ties within the powder by migration to the surface.
During s in ter ing the powder becomes a sponge l ike
structure with all the particles interconnected in a huge
la ttice . This s tructure is of high mec ha nica l streng th a nd
density, but is also highly porous giving a large internal
surface area.
The large r the s urfac e a rea the larger the ca pac itanc e.
Thus high C V (ca pa citance /voltag e prod uct) pow de rs, w hich
have a low average particle size, are used for low voltage, high c apa citance pa rts . The figure below s hows typica l
powders. Note the very great difference in particle size
betw een the powder CVs.

The follow ing e xa mple use s a 22F 25V ca pa citor to
illust rate the p oint.

d is the d ielectric thickness in meters (for a typica l
25V part)C is the ca pac itance in Farad sand Ais the surface area in meters
Rearranging this equation gives
A = Cdo
r
thus for a 22F/25V ca pa citor the surface area is 150 sq uare
centimeters, o r nearly 12 the size of this pa ge.
The d ielectric is then formed over a ll the tanta lum s urfa ce s
by the electrochemica l proc ess of a nodiza tion. The pellet is
dipped in to a very weak so lut ion o f phosphoric ac id .
The d ielectric thickness is co ntrolled by the voltag e a pplied
during the forming process. Initially the power supply is kept
in a constant current mode until the correct thickness of
dielectric has been reached (that is the voltage reaches the
forming voltage), it then switches to constant voltage mode
and the current deca ys to c lose to zero.
The chemica l eq uations des cribing the proc es s a re a s

The oxide fo rms o n the surfac e of the Ta nta lum but it also
grows into the metal. For each unit of oxide two thirds grows
out and one third grows in. It is for this reason that there is a
limit on the ma ximum voltag e ra ting of Ta ntalum ca pa citors

1.1 Capacitance
1.1.1 Rated Capacitance (CR).This is the nominal ra ted c a pa citance . For tanta lum ca pa ci-
tors it is measured as the capacitance of the equivalentse ries c ircuit at 20C using a me a suring b ridg e supplied b y a
120Hz source, free of harmonics with a maximum bias of
2.2V d.c.
1.1.2 Capacitance tolerance. This is the p ermissible va ria tion o f the a ctua l value of the
capacitance from the rated value. For additional reading,
please consult the AVX technical publication "Capacitance
Tolera nces for S olid Tanta lum C a pa citors" .
1.1.3 Temperature dependence of capacitance. The ca pa citance o f a tanta lum cap a citor varies w ith temper-
a ture. This varia tion itself is dep ende nt to a sma ll extent on
the rated voltag e a nd ca pac itor size.
1.1.4 Frequency dependence of the capacitance. The effective ca pac itance d ecreas es a s freq uency increa ses .
Beyond 100KHz the capacitance continues to drop until res-
onance is reached (typically between 0.5 - 5MHz depending
on the rating). Beyond the resonant frequency the device
bec omes inductive.

1.2 Voltage
1.2.1 Rated d.c. voltage. (VR)This is the rated d.c . volta ge fo r co ntinuous op eration at
85C.
1.2.2 Category voltage (VC)This is the ma ximum volta ge that ma y be a pplied co ntinu-
ously to a capacitor. It is equal to the rated voltage up to
+ 85C , be yond w hich it is s ubject to a linea r derating, to 2/3
VR at 125C .
1.2.3 Surge voltage.(US)This is the highes t voltag e that ma y be a pplied to a ca pa citor
for short period s o f time. The s urge volta ge ma y be a pplied
up to 10 times in an hour for periods of up to 30s at a time.
The surge voltag e must not be us ed a s a pa rameter in thedes ign o f circuits in w hich, in the norma l course of o peration,
the ca pac itor is periodically cha rged and discharged.
1.2.4 Effect of surgesThe s olid Ta nta lum ca pa citor has a limited a bility to w ith-
sta nd voltag e a nd c urrent surges . This is in co mmon w ith all
other electrolytic capacitors and is due to the fact that they
operate under very high electrical stress across the dielec-
tric. For example a 25 volt capacitor has an Electrical Field
of 147 KV/mm w hen opera ted a t rated volta ge .

Technical Summary and Application GuidelinesElectrical Characteristics and Explanation of Terms
It is important to ensure that the voltage across the terminals
of the capacitor never exceeds the specified surge voltage
rating.
Solid tantalum capacitors have a self healing ability of the
Manganese Dioxide semiconduct ing layer used as the
negative plate, however this is limited in low impedanceapplications.
In the case of low impedance circuits, the capacitor is likely
to be stressed by current surges. Derating the capacitor by
50% or more increases the reliability of the component. See
figure 2 pa ge 33. The AVX Rec omm end ed Dera ting Ta ble
(page 34) summarizes voltage rating for use on common
voltage rails, in low impedance applications.
In circuits which undergo rapid charge or discharge a pro-
tective resistor of 1/V is recomme nde d. If this is impossi-
ble, a derating fa ctor of up to 70% should b e used.
In such situations a higher voltage may be needed than is
available as a single capacitor. A series combination shouldbe used to increase the working voltage of the equivalent
capacitor: For example two 22F 25V parts in series is
equivalent to a 11F 50V part. For further details refer to
J .A.G ills pa per Inves tiga tion into the e ffects of co nnecting
Ta nta lum c a pa citors in se ries , a va ila ble from AVX offices
worldwide.
NOTE:
While testing a circuit (e.g. at ICT or functional) it is likely that
the capacitors will be subjected to large voltage and current
transients, which will not be seen in normal use. These con-
ditions should be borne in mind when considering the
capacitors rated voltage for use. These can be controlled byensuring a correct test resistance is used.
1.2.5 Reverse voltage and Non-Polar operation. The reverse voltag e ratings a re des igne d to c over exception-
al conditions of small level excursions into incorrect polarity.
The va lues q uoted are not intended to c over continuous
reverse opera tion.
The pea k reverse vo ltag e a pplied to the ca pa citor must not
exceed:
10% of the rated d.c. working voltage to a maximum of
1.0v at 25 C
3% of the rated d.c. working voltage to a maximum of0.5v at 85 C
1% of the ca tegory d.c . w orking voltag e to a maximum of
0.1v a t 125 C
Non-Polar operation. If higher reverse voltages are unavoidable, then two capaci-
tors, each of twice the required capacitance and of equal
to lerance and ra ted vol t age , should be connected in a
bac k- t o-bac k c on f igu ra t ion , i . e . bo t h an odes o r bo t h
ca thode s joined to ge ther. This is nec es sa ry in order to a void
a reduction in life expec tanc y.
1.2.6 Superimposed A.C. Voltage (Vr.m.s.) -
Ripple Voltage.This is the ma ximum r.m.s . a lternating voltag e; s uperim-
posed on a d.c. voltage, that may be applied to a capacitor.
Th e s u m o f t h e d . c . v o lt a g e a n d p e a k va lu e o f t h e
superimposed a.c. voltage must not exceed the category
voltag e, Uc.
Full details are given in section 2.
1.2.7 Forming voltage.
This is the voltag e a t w hich the a node oxide is formed. Thethickness of this oxide layer is proportional to the formation
voltag e for a tantalum ca pac itor and is a factor in setting the
rated voltag e.
1.3 Dissipation Factor andTangent of Loss Angle (Tan )
1.3.1 Dissipation factor (D.F.).Dissipation factor is the measurement of the tangent of the
loss a ngle (tan ) express ed a s a percentag e. The mea sure-
ment of DF is c a rried o ut at + 20C a nd 120Hz w ith 2.2V d.c .
bias with an a .c. voltag e free of harmonics . The value of DF
is temperature a nd frequency d ependent.
Note: For surface mounted products the maximum allowed
DF values are indicated in the ratings table and it is impor-
tant to note that these are the limits met by the component
AFTER so ldering onto the s ubs trate .
1.3.2 Tangent of Loss Angle (Tan ).This is a mea surement of the ene rgy los s in the ca pa citor. It
is express ed a s Ta n and is the power loss of the capacitor
divided by its reac tive powe r at a sinusoida l voltag e of s pec -
ified freq uency. Terms a lso used a re powe r fa ctor, los s fa ctor
and dielectric loss. Cos (90 - ) is the true pow er fa cto r. The
mea sureme nt of Ta n is c arried o ut at + 20C and 120 Hz

1.3.3 Frequency dependence of Dissipation Factor.
Dissipation Factor increases with frequency as shown in the
typica l curves:
1.3.4 Temperature Dependence of Dissipation Factor.Dissipation factor varies with temperature as the typical
curves show. For maximum limits please refer to ratings
tables.
1.4 Impedance, (Z) and Equivalent SeriesResistance (ESR)
1.4.1 Impedance, Z.This is the ratio of voltag e to current a t a spe cified freq uen-
cy. Three fa ctors c ontribute to the imped anc e of a tanta lum
capacitor; the resistance of the semiconductor layer; the
capacitance value and the inductance of the electrodes and
leads.
At high frequencies the inductance of the leads becomes a
limiting fa cto r. The tem pera ture a nd freq uency be ha vior of
these three factors of impedance determine the behavior of
the impeda nce Z. The impeda nce is mea sured at 20 C a nd
100kHz.
1.4.2 Equivalent Series Resistance, ESR.Resistance losses occur in all practical forms of capacitors.
These are ma de up from s everal dif ferent mecha nisms ,
including resistance in components and contacts, viscous
forces within the dielectric and defects producing bypass
current pa ths. To express the effect of these los se s they a re
co nsidered a s the ES R of the ca pa citor. The ESR is freq uen-
cy d ependent and ca n be found by using the relationship;
ESR = Ta n
2fC
Where f is the frequency in Hz, and C is the capac itanc e in farads .
The ESR is mea sured a t 20 C a nd 100kHz.
ESR is one of the contributing factors to impedance, and at
high frequencies (100kHz. and above) it becomes the domi-
nant factor. Thus ESR a nd impeda nce be come almost iden-
tica l, impeda nce being only ma rginally higher.
1.4.3 Frequency dependence of Impedance and ESR.ESR a nd Impeda nce b oth increase with dec reas ing freq uen-
cy. At lower frequencies the values diverge as the extra
contributions to impedance (due to the reactance of the
capacitor) become more significant. Beyond 1 MHz. (and
beyond the resonant point of the capacitor) impedance
ag ain increa ses due to the inductance of the ca pac itor.

1.5 D.C. Leakage Current (IL)
1.5.1 Leakage current, ILThe leakag e c urrent is d epend ent on the voltag e a pplied, the
elapsed time since the voltage was applied and the compo-
nent temperature. It is me as ured a t + 20C with the rated
voltag e a pplied. A protective resista nce o f 1000 is con-
nected in series with the capacitor in the measuring circuit.
Three to five minutes a fter applica tion o f the rated volta ge
the leakage current must not exceed the maximum values
indicated in the ra tings tab les . These ta bles a re ba se d on
0.01CV or 0.5A, w hichever is g reater.
Reforming of tantalum capacitors is unnecessary even after
prolonged periods without the application of voltage.
1.5.2 Temperature dependence of the leakage current. The leakag e c urrent increa se s with higher tempe ratures , typ-
ical values are shown in the graph. For operation between
85C and 125C, the maximum working voltage must be
derated and can be found from the following formula.
Umax = 1- (T- 85) x VRvolts, whe re Tis the req uired125

1.5.3 Voltage dependence of the leakage current. The leaka ge current d rops rapidly b elow the value co rre-
sponding to the rated voltage UR when reduced voltages

current is s how n in the g raph. This w ill a lso g ive a s ignifi-

In an a.c. application heat is generated within the capacitorby both the a.c. component of the signal (which will depend
upon the signal form, amplitude and frequency), and by the
d.c. leakage. For practical purposes the second factor is
insignifica nt. The a ctua l power diss ipa ted in the ca pa citor is
calculated using the formula:
P = I2 R

Where P ma x is the maximum permissible power dissipateda s listed for the prod uct under co nsideration (se e ta bles).
However care must be taken to ensure that:
1. The d.c . wo rking voltag e of the ca pa citor must not be
exceeded by the sum of the positive peak of the applied
a.c. voltage and the d.c. bias voltage.
2. The sum of the applied d .c. b ias voltag e a nd the nega tive

in excess of the Reverse Voltage.

Se veral capa citors were tested a nd the comb ined results a re
shown here. All these capacitors were measured on FR4
bo a rd, with no other hea tsinking. The ripple wa s supplied at
various freq uencies from 1KHz to 1MHz.
As can be seen in the figure above, the average P ma x value
for the C ca se ca pac itors w as 0.11 Watts. This is the sa me
a s tha t q uoted in Ta ble I.
The D ca se ca pac itors ga ve an average P ma x value 0.125
Wa tts. This is low er than the va lue q uoted in the ta ble by
0.025 Wa tts .
The E ca se ca pac itors ga ve an average P ma x of 0.200 Watts
which w as much higher than the 0.165 Wa tts from tab le 1.
If a typical capacitors ESR with frequency is considered,
e.g . figure below, it ca n be se en tha t there is va ria tion. Thus
for a set ripple current, the amount of power to be dissipated
by the c a pa citor will vary with freq uency. This is clea rly
shown in figure in top of next column, which shows that the
units surface temperature rises less for a given value of rip-
ple current at 1MHz than at 100KHz.
The graph below s how s a typica l ESR va riation with freq uency.
Typica l ripple c urrent versus temp rise for 100KHz a nd 1MHz
sine wave inputs.
If I2R is then plotted it can be seen that the two lines are in
fact coincident, as shown in figure below.
ExampleA Ta nta lum ca pa citor is b eing used in a filtering applica tion,
where it will be required to handle a 2 Amp peak-to-peak,
200KHz square wave current.
A square wave is the sum of an infinite series of sine waves
at all the odd harmonics of the square waves fundamental
freq uency. The eq uation w hich relates is
ISquare = Ipksin (2 ) +Ipk sin (6 ) +
Ipk sin (10 ) +
Ipk sin (14 ) + .. .

the D case results shown in figure top of previous column, it

2.2. Thermal Management. The hea t generated ins ide a t an ta lum ca pac itor in a .c .
operation comes from the power dissipation due to ripple
current. It is equal to I2R, where I is the rms value of the
current at a given frequency, and R is the ESR at the same
frequency with an additional contribution due to the leakage
current. The hea t will be trans ferred from the outer surfaceby co nduction. How efficiently it is transferred from this point
is d ependent on the thermal mana gement of the boa rd.
