“BASF’s Polymer Dispersion structures for the Surface Coatings Industry”
Water Borne products for Surface Coatings must fulfill requirements that in many cases are mutually
exclusive. These requirements are achieved by the ever increasing tailoring of the surface coating
properties – i.e. what more can the coating do? In turn, achieving more from the coatings is driven by
increasingly designed structures of the individual raw materials and an understanding of how these
structures combine in the final product.
This presentation will discuss the various product classes of BASF’s Water Borne Polymer Dispersions,
including the acrylics surface chemistry and multiphase structure and the Solid Grade Oligomer
stabilized dispersions. Their structures and the rationale behind their design will be examined in relation
to the properties they are designed to display and how this benefits surface coatings.
Dr. Joshua Taylor biography

Dispersions and Pigments division and has been in this role from July 2011.
Two years prior Joshua was a Developer in BASF’s Dispersions and Pigments regional laboratory in
Shanghai, China, focused new products for the Adhesives and Fiber Bonding industries.
From 2007 to 2009 Joshua was a Researcher then Developer at BASF’s global headquarters in
Ludwigshafen, Germany focused on new products for Paper Coating and Fiber Bonding.
Joshua began his career with BASF Australia in 2002 as an Account Manager for the Carpet Backing and
Architectural Coatings industries, joining BASF following the completion of a PhD in Emulsion
Polymerization sponsored by Dow Germany at the University of Sydney.
