FLORIDA GOOD DERBY SOURCE FOR REDDAM RACINGBy Alastair Bull
Florida 2-year-olds in training sales have proved a
great source of 2016 Kentucky Derby (gr. I) con-
tenders for Reddam Racing.
At the Fasig-Tipton Florida sale in March, trainer
Doug O'Neill's brother Dennis paid $400,000 on behalf
of Reddam Racing for champion 2-year-old male
Nyquist (Uncle Mo), who begins his Derby preparation
in the Feb. 15 San Vicente (gr. II) at Santa Anita Park.
A few weeks later, the same team spent $120,000
on a Quality Road colt at Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s
March 2-year-old sale.
That colt, Frank Conversation, emphasized his
Derby credentials by winning the $200,000 El Cami-
no Real Derby (gr. III) Feb. 13 on Golden Gate Fields'
synthetic track.
Doug O'Neill said Frank Conversation is likely to
stay on synthetic for his next start, the April 2 Spiral
Stakes (gr. III) at Turfway Park.
"The buildup (to the Kentucky Derby) is almost as
exciting as the actual event," he said. "When you have
a good horse and you keep him injury-free and watch
him train every day, there's no better feeling." BH

TEPIN ALL CLASS IN 2016 DEBUTBy Claire Novak
Champion Tepin looks ready for another great
year after a scintillating season debut in the 1
1/16-mile $150,000 Endeavour Stakes (gr. IIIT) at
Tampa Bay Downs.
Robert Masterson's 5-year-old daughter of
Bernstein, last seen beating boys in the Breeders'
Cup Mile (gr. IT), toyed with five rivals from her
own division. She galloped home a 3 1/2-length
winner under a hand ride from regular partner
Julien Leparoux in a final time of 1:42.91 on a firm
turf course.
While a return to the Breeders' Cup is the goal
for the Eclipse Award-winning Mark Casee trainee,
Tepin's first major target remains another faceoff
with males in the April 15 Maker's 46 Mile (gr. IT) at
Keeneland.
For Tepin's 15-year-old dam Life Happened
(Stravinsky), a session with War Front is in store.
Also the producer of grade II winner Vyjack, Life
Happened was carrying a Harlan's Holiday colt
when bought by Solis and Litt for LNJ Foxwoods for
$750,000 at the 2014 Keeneland January horses of
all ages sale. That colt is now in Florida with Eddie
Woods. Her 2015 foal by Into Mischief died. BH

BOLO BREAKS THROUGH IN ARCADIABy Jeremy Balan
Pitting Bolo against multiple graded winners Ob-
viously and Om was never the ideal situation for
the 4-year-old's return off a seven-month layoff, but
trainer Carla Gaines has had nothing but good things
to say about the son of Temple City's development
heading into the Arcadia (gr. IIT) Feb. 13 at Santa
Anita Park.
Now exceeding 17 hands, the one-time Kentucky
Derby (gr. I) longshot fired his best shot in the mile
grass race, tracking down veteran grade I-winning
frontrunner Obviously in the final strides to secure
his first graded victory by a neck.
Bolo's jockey Flavien Prat never let the speedy
8-year-old Obviously get out of reach through frac-
tions of :22.70, :45.67, and 1:09.13. The pair hit the
wire in a sizzling 1:33.09. Om, who uncharacteristi-
cally trailed five lengths off the leader early, finished
third, 2 3/4 lengths back.
"Carla did just an amazing job—incredible," said
Bolo's part owner Keith Brackpool. "Her patience
over a seven-month period drives me crazy, but then
in one day, it all comes together." BH
PATIENCE PAYS OFF FOR DANCING HOUSEBy Frank Angst
After a juvenile grade I placing, stakes success
seemed around the corner for Godolphin Rac-
ing's Dancing House, but as it turned out, her con-
nections would have to wait a few years.
That wait ended Feb. 13 when the 5-year-old home-
bred Tapit mare tracked early leader Hot City Girl and
then out-dueled Lady Sabelia in the stretch to win the
$300,000 Barbara Fritchie Stakes (gr. II) at Laurel Park.
Dancing House, third in the Spinaway (gr. I) as
a 2-year-old, opened her season with a runner-up
finish to recently-retired champion female sprinter
La Verdad in the Interborough Stakes last month at
Aqueduct Racetrack.
The victory added to a strong seasonal start for
trainer Kiaran McLaughlin, who also sent out Fritchie
runner-up Clothes Fall Off and won Saturday's Royal
Delta Stakes (gr. II) at Gulfstream Park with Penwith.
McLaughlin has six stakes wins this season in
the U.S. and Dubai, including a win in the Holy Bull
Stakes (gr. II) with Shadwell Stable's undefeated clas-
sic hopeful Mohaymen. BH

FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH DUO LOOKS WELL IN WORKOUTSBy Alastair Bull
Two of the horses set to take on leading Kentucky
Derby (gr. I) prospect Mohaymen at the end of
February looked good during Gulfstream Park work-
outs Feb. 13.
Awesome Banner (Awesome of Course), who
extended his unbeaten record to three races with an
easy Swale Stakes (gr. II) victory Jan. 30, impressed
when he ran five furlongs in 1:00.03.
Cherry Wine (Paddy O'Prado), winner of his last
two starts, was even quicker, running the same dis-
tance in :59.31.
"He went easy. It looked like he was going slower,"
trainer Dale Romans said. "He did it right and gal-
loped out good, came back good."
Both horses are being set for the Fountain of
Youth Stakes (gr. II) Feb. 27 at Gulfstream Park,
where they are likely to run into Mohaymen (Tapit),
who maintained his unbeaten status in the Holy Bull
Stakes (gr. II) Jan. 30.
Mohaymen continued his march toward the Foun-
tain of Youth when running four furlongs in :47.75 at
Palm Meadows Feb. 12. BH
SUNLAND PLANS TO RESUME RACING FEB. 26By Claire Novak
Racing could resume at Sunland Park Feb. 26, al-
though horses with equine herpesvirus are still on
the grounds and no one is allowed to ship into or out
of the New Mexico track.
Officials announced a plan Feb. 13 allowing
non-quarantined horses to run, even as 40% of the
barn area remains under quarantine. Sixty-six horses
have tested positive since racing halted Jan. 22; six
are dead because of the virus.
A previous policy suspending racing for 14 days
from the time of each new positive now applies only
to the barn the positive horse came from, director of
marketing Eric Linder said.
"All the other barns that are not under quarantine
and have had no positive tests in the last 14 days will
be allowed to run," he explained. "We had one posi-
tive test today."
With the track's signature race, the $800,000 Sun-
land Derby (gr. III), slated for March 20, officials hope
to eradicate the virus in time to run the prep and to
allow shippers in to compete. BH

DYNAMIC CAREER FOR MEDAGLIA D'ORO
Medaglia d'Oro had a stellar Feb. 6. His
6-year-old sons Mshawish and Valid ran
one-two in the Donn (gr. I), and his undefeated
champion 2-year-old Songbird reappeared to
take the Las Virgenes (gr. II).
Those wins propelled Medaglia d'Oro into sec-
ond place behind Tapit on the 2016 leading sires
table, the pair having occupied the same positions
in 2015.
Bidding for his own sire
championship, Medaglia
d'Oro has been a major
factor in awarding the
title—he was the leading
earner for his sire El Prado
(Sadler's Wells) when he
wore the crown. Without
doubt the ascendency of
the European turf runner
El Prado's line has been a
notable development in
U.S. bloodstock; in addition
to the success of Medaglia
d'Oro, El Prado's son Kit-
ten's Joy took the 2013 title.
Despite El Prado's
success and Medaglia d'Oro's quality as a run-
ner—underlined by victories in the Travers (gr. I),
Whitney (gr. I) and Donn, as well as seconds in the
Belmont (gr. I), Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I) twice,
and Dubai World Cup (UAE-I)—there were a few
questions when he retired to stud. He was late
to mature, coming good from the summer of his
3-year-old career; his first three dams were by
Bailjumper, Silent Screen and Restless Wind, none
of whom resonated positively in the pedigree of
stallion prospects; and the female line was a few
generations removed from the highest class.
Of course, the record shows Medaglia d'Oro
was successful from the start: eight graded
stakes winners in his first crop, headed by Horse
of the Year Rachel Alexandra. What's interesting,
however, in reflecting Medaglia d'Oro's career, is
that while class has remained constant, in other
ways his record has been extremely dynamic,
very much reflecting the mares he has been
sent and they way in which his offspring have
been handled.
He gained a reputation as a "filly sire" after his
first three crops produced 13 graded stakes-win-
ning fillies, against four colts. However, following
what may have been an adjustment in the type
of mares sent to Medaglia
d'Oro, the colts have out-
scored the fillies at graded
level in recent years.
Similarly, while initially
the dirt runners among
Medaglia d'Oro's offspring
had the edge, every graded
scorer from his 2011 and
2012 crops earned that
distinction on turf (although
considering how well
Mshawish has handled the
turf to dirt transition, one
wonders if more dirt per-
formers are lurking there).
He also seemed a horse
whose offspring need-
ed time—until recently. The mating with a fast
Danehill mare produced Vancouver, undefeated
champion 2-year-old in Australia for 2014-15, and
Songbird was hot on Vancouver's heels as their
sire's first champion juvenile in the U.S. BH
