12 DECEMBER 2019
HAPPY HOLIDAYS
Dear Parents,
Here we are again,
December is upon us and
with it comes all the
excitement that the end of
year brings. It is a busy time
filled with the hustle and
bustle of gift shopping for
friends and family near and
far and the end of year
functions. It may mean
travelling to visit family or opening our homes to receive guests. Traditions
such as visiting Father Christmas, singing carols and decorating our homes in
beautiful lights is all part of the holiday celebrations for many families.
Life at school is also very busy. We have had the Junior Primary Christmas
sing-a-long, Year 7 Graduation, the special Christmas school lunch and end of
year class excursions and celebrations, to name a few.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff, students and parents
for their continued support. Your contribution has helped to make
Stradbroke School a strong, inclusive school community. We are lucky to have
such a rich and diverse group of students. It has been a joy to watch the
children learn and grow throughout 2019.
The new-year will bring new learning experiences, new challenges and new
fun. I look forward to what lies ahead for us as a school community in 2020.
We will be saying goodbye to a number of staff on Friday at our whole school
assembly, and welcoming a number of new teachers to Stradbroke School for
2020.
I wish you all Peace, Joy, Hope and Happiness during this Summer Holiday
season and throughout the New Year.

The attitudes supporting these characteristics are
appreciation, commitment, confidence, cooperation, curiosity,
creativity, empathy, enthusiasm, independence, integrity,

Volunteers: For those of you who I have your contact details, I
will text you all late January for your available days for the
volunteer roster for Term 1.
Thank you!: Thank you so much to everyone who has
volunteered in the Canteen this year. I really appreciate your
help, without such wonderful support, we couldn't continue to
offer the students of Stradbroke the variety of food, or the
special event days such as Pancake week, The Book Week
Breakfast or the Christmas lunch.
I hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas and safe holidays.
I look forward to seeing everyone again in 2020!

2020 STUDENT MEDICATION UPDATE
It is a Department for Education requirement that we have a
current Health Care Plan for all students at our school who
need individual health care and support. All Medication
Agreements must be reviewed every 12 months. Please ensure
your child’s is up to date.
In cases where medication must be taken during the day, the
following procedures apply:
• All medications, including those purchased over the
counter, must be sent with a Medication Agreement and
a Health Care Plan. They must be in the original container
with a chemist label detailing the child’s name and dose.
• Medication is stored in the Health Centre
If your child has a medical issue that the school is not aware of,
please contact Student Services for further information.
MYP SERVICE AND ACTION HOURS
As part of their learning in the MYP, students are encouraged
to demonstrate a personal commitment to service and act to
make a positive difference to the lives of others and to the
environment. Students are recognised for their service both at
school and in the wider community. At Stradbroke the Year 6
and 7 students take part in a Community Service program.
Congratulations to the following students who have
completed their hours for 2019:

ACTION IN OU2 AND OU3
The children in
OU2 and OU3
have been
discussing
Christmas as part
of their last unit of
inquiry. As part of
this discussion
they talked about
the giving and
receiving of gifts
at this time of year. One of the students reflected on the fact
that he had a lot of toys at home that he didn’t really need any
more and he wondered if everyone has that many toys. The
talk then turned to the recent bushfires experienced in South
Australia and how some families needed to leave their homes
because of the fires and didn’t take anything with them. The
children wondered how this affected the children and the
adults. One child then suggested that they could give some of
their toys to the children who may have lost some in the fires
– to which the rest of the children agreed! Based on this the
children have taken the initiative to collect toys that they no
longer play with and they will be donated to the SA based not-
for-profit charity “Treasure Boxes” who provide essentials to
newborns, babies and children living in disadvantage within
our community. This charity seek to empower others, create a
positive change and at the same time ensure that valuable,
high quality resources don’t go to waste. The children were
able to donate a number of items to this charity and we are
very proud of them all. It demonstrates that action can be
taken even by the youngest members of our school
community!
CONGRATULATIONS K2 AND STRABROKE
As part of the Year 3/4 Unit of Inquiry, “Reduce, Reuse,
Recycle” K2 inquired into the impact that our choices make on
the environment. K2 decided to take action by collecting
unwanted Lion King Ooshies to Woolworths so that they could
be recycled, instead of spending hundreds of years in landfill.
Students from Stradbroke worked together and as a school we
collected over 1000 Ooshies! K2 then walked to Woolworths
and returned them so that they could be delivered to
TerraCycle to become new products such as playground
equipment. Great job everyone!
ROBOTICS CHAMPION!
On Thursday 28 November, Edward Stevenson from K2
competed in and received first place in the 2019 Robocup
Junior Sumo robotics competition. Edward and his team
created a robot that had to compete in a head to head battle
against robots created by opposing teams. In order to win the
competition their robot was able to push/flip their opponents’
robots out of the circular playing ring. Well done Edward!

Looking for screen content that will be enjoyable and age-appropriate for the children in
your care during the Christmas - New Year holidays?
The range of choice has greatly increased. As well as the new releases in cinemas, there
are streaming services such as Netflix, the new Disney Plus and others.
It can be difficult to choose what will suit your child and what might not.
Australian Council on Children and the Media [ACCM] has developed a guide to what’s on,
utilising our database of Know Before You Go reviews developed over the past 17 years.
These show age suitability through our traditional red, yellow, green signals.
Where there is no ACCM review, we have provided the Australian Classification and / or
information from The Netherlands’ child-development based Kijkwijzer system.
This guide is a “work in progress”, so do check back for more reviews and updated
information over these coming weeks.
