Stem and Leaf
A stem-and-leaf plot can help you compare data.
Stem and Leaf
• A stem-and-leaf plot is a table that represents a group of numbers. (data)
• The leaves represents numbers in the ones place. • The stems represents numbers in the tens and
hundreds places. • In a stem and leaf plot, you don’t skip numbers in
the stems. • If there is no leaf for a stem, then you leave it
blank.
Drawing a Stem and Leaf Plot
Draw an ordered stem-and-leaf plot for the following data for the price of tennis shoes. Make sure the graph is properly labeled.

Our first step is to write the numbers in order from least to greatest.
Drawing a Stem and Leaf Plot
Our next step is to draw a table with two columns -- one for
stems and one for leaves

This is the correct way to draw the stem and leaf plot for our data.
Let’s try another one…
The heights of 11 fourth-grade badminton players are (in inches):
• 56• 61• 61• 60• 59• 57
• 58• 58• 63• 61• 59
First, order your data from least to greatest.
• 56• 57• 58• 58• 59• 59
• 60• 61• 61• 61• 63
Then, put your data in a stem-and-leaf plot.
The ordered numbers are: 56, 57, 58, 58, 59, 59, 60, 61, 61, 61, 63
• Each STEM stands for the first digit of each number.
• Record the tens digits in order from least to greatest.

The ordered numbers are: 56, 57, 58, 58, 59, 59, 60, 61, 61, 61, 63
• Each LEAF stands for the second digit of each number.
• Record the ones digits in order from least to greatest.

You can use a stem-and-leaf plot to find the median and the mode.
MEDIANFind the middle
number in a set of numbers.
The median is 59 inches.
MODEFind the number that
occurs most often in a set of numbers.
The mode is 61 inches.
