POST-GAME QUOTES
Washington Redskins Pittsburgh Steelers tlovember 24, 1985 Three Rivers StadiVisitor
VS.Home Date
HEAD COACH CHUCK IIOLL:
"The thing that hurt us the most today, obviously, was the kicking game. We got lousy f%eldposition, touchdowns and field goals scored on that. As far as David Woodley was concernedit (stomach virus) started last flight with the flu. He was dehydrated. We tried to get hisome fluids, but he was too weak to go so Scott(Cançbell ) had to go. We dressed
a backup."
(On special teams) — "On the kickoff returns, they(Redskins) did a hell of a job with them. They ran through us, over us and around us."
(On QB Scott Campbell) - "He really hasn't gotten much work since training canç and that wasthe problem. Under the circtsnstances he did the best he could."
(On blocked punt) - "It was a missed assignment on the line of scrinmiage."
(On AFC Central race) - "It looks like we're In a position where we have to win theSCOTT CAMPBELL
"I was prepared to play. It's a tough situation to be thrown tn there like but when you'rethe backup quarterback, you've got to be ready to play."55 DONNIE SHELL — (On Jay Schroeder)
"They didn't put any tough situations. They didn't send him up the middle. What can yousay, he s won the last two gaffles. He's a great quarterback."(On loss) - "We're not going to hang our heads. We're going to keep going. We're going to hangtough and regroup. People have counted us out before but we're not down yet. ItHEAD COACH JOE GIBBS: —_____________
(On overall effort) - "I'm super happy. I'm;very proud of our players. This was .a great effortand a very, very big win for us. Pittsburgh is a tough place to play and a very tough crowdto play before. I'm just very proud of my players."
(On Schroeder) - "What else can you say? He's big, has a good arm and he's very smart. What Ilike best is he's very calm. lie's facedtwo good defenses the past two weeks and has shown. greatpoise."
(On game plan) — "We went in with a full plan. We cut down a little because we thought we wouldget some different looks from their defense. But Jay said he felt good. Their defense wasdictating where we would go with the ball."
(On special teams play) - " I mentioned in the team meetings last night that I would loveget a return for Kenny(Jenkins) because he's been working so hard, and he takes the openingkickoff 95 yards. It was great. The special teams the past two weeks has made me very proud. They carry the Washington tradition of good special teams. The runback was the difference Inthe game. It took the fans out."
____
QB JAY SCHROEDER - "I am calm by nature. Ihever get too depressed or too up and I thinkhelped. I felt good going into the game. Last night I slept qreat; Islept like a baby. Lastweek I was just in a position to react. This week I was able to prepare and consequently readthe defenses more."
"This is the loudest•place I've ever been, especially considering it's outdoors. On the goalIn the first series, the guards couldn't even hear me yelling. You just have to keep yourcool and hope that everybody gets off at the same time."
(On ID pass to Didier) - " I had the choice of working the ball to Gary(Clark), (Art) Monk, orDids. I saw Dids on the cornerback and just threw It up. He's 6-5 and that's the advantage Iwas looking for. He made a good catch on it. I underthrew it.""This game is a lot of fun. (In baseball) I hit my share of home runs, but unfortunately I hitnothing else. It was just a lot of fun to be out there today."6-C JEFF BOSTIC
"We know what time of year it is. We know it's time to win. Going we were aware that wihad a young quarterback and that we had to give him time in order to win the game. Jaysome wise choices if his receivers were covered, he threw the ball away. We're making the bjgplays now and avoiding mistakes. Coupled with the way our "D" is playing, we're going to win." -
POOL REPORT with Referee Gordon Mccarter
"We are discussing the play that occurred with 17 seconds remaining in the 2nd quarter, two plays preceding the foul situation wherein we called unnecessary roughness on No. 93for Pittsburgh."
"On third down, which was a running play, enough yardage was made to be a first down. Nowthe team was in the hurry up offense—they ran a play without a huddle. In this situation, anytime it's less than fourth down, we cooperate with them in our mechanics by making theball ready for play as quickly as we possibly can and they just go. this occurred. Fourthdown was an Incomplete pass, following which occurred the scuffle which led to the personalfoul and 15-yard penalty against No. 93. Admittedly, our mechanics were clumsy, but onthe third down play, they actually made enough yardage for a first down. The box man movedat the beckoning of the head linesman. He flipped from third to fourth down and It wouldappear from the press box that this was a fourth—down play. Actually, the position of theball will indicate when the films that this was actually a first—down situation."
"Because of the hurry-up offense situation, then the scuffle the next play, admittedly, nDtformally, indicates that first down. I think the position of the ball will indlcatewhatI have just said regarding the down which just occurred."
"Yes, it was what we call a dead—ball foul — a foul that occurred between downs. That downactually counts, we go the 15 yards from the succeeding spot which was the dead-ball spotand go from there first—down. The box man had not flipped it to first down and admittedlyin our hurry and to break up the scuffle, and all that went with It, we did not formallyindicate. I think you'll find the position of the ball following the third down play wassufficient to assure the first down. Therein lies the ruling."
