StadiumDallmeier CCTV/IP video surveillance solutions for stadiums

Large-scale events are a major challenge for any organiser. One of the main issues regarding the planning andexecution of such events is to ensure the safety of visitorsat all times. Video surveillance technology is anindispensable toll to this end, for instance when it comes tosecuring major sports stadiums. Regarding videosurveillance, numerous stadiums around the world rely onproducts and solutions by Dallmeier.

Whenever a major stadium hosts a great concert or anexciting soccer match, a huge mass of people convene at thesite. Growing numbers of visitors though also increase therisk of dangerous situations arising. Those can includeobjects being thrown onto the playing field or even thedisplaying of fireworks by fans. Unchecked crowds or brawlsbetween fans are probably among the scenarios thatsecurity personnel fear most. In order to prevent suchescalations from the start and to ensure the safety of fansand players, a sophisticated video security system providesthe necessary overview.

Besides higher security for visitors, CCTV/IP surveillancesystems also offer a clear financial benefit for stadiums.Given the fact that large events such as soccer matchesattract many international fans, it is important to be able toward off any potential lawsuits from abroad.

Detailed images owing to Cam_inPIX®

While enthusiasts follow with breathless attention thecourse of the game in the stadium, high-resolutionDallmeier cameras keep a close eye on the whole scene andprovide the necessary security. Depending on the area ofuse either fixed dome cameras or PTZ cameras are used.

All cameras are equipped with the tried and trustedCam_inPIX® technology, which allows for the recording ofclear, high-contrast images, even under the most difficultlighting conditions. Those include frequent changesbetween shadows and lights as they occur in sportsstadiums. It is also possible to clearly identify faces ofindividuals even from large distances.

Reliable recording

For recording the image data Dallmeier offers differentrecorder, depending on the size of the respective stadium. The DMS 240 "In Memory of Leonardo" for example is ahybrid stand-alone video and audio recorder with up to 24channels, which supports the H.264, MPEG-4 and MJPEGvideo formats.

The DIS-2/M devices are one-channel audio and videorecorder recorders in modular design, which are designedfor installation and operation in a 19" module rack. Owing tothis blade technology, even the largest of systems can berealised in a space-saving and cost-efficient way.

All devices have one thing in common though: a highreliability and failure safety. All components aremanufactured according to the highest quality standardsand extensively tested prior to being shipped. Dallmeieruses the operating system Linux on all its recorders. It isregarded as being extremely stable in professional circles asit practically never fails. In order to further enhance stability, the operating system was separated from the hard disksand saved on a Flash-ROM. Depending on the applicationthe failure safety can be increased as needed. This can bedone for instance through a redundant recording or the useof external storage systems. No matter if they are smallregional stadiums or giant arenas such as the OlympicStadium in Athens or the Soccer City Stadium in SouthAfrica (where the opening and closing matches of the 2010Soccer World Cup were held), Dallmeier offers the righttechnology for any applications.

Intuitive operation

The systems are controlled via a professional managementsoftware, either PView 7 or, particularly with complexsystems, the extremely performance-capable SecurityManagement System SeMSy®.

SeMSy® enables convenient use and management ofvarious media data streams and also provides live playbackand recording of video and audio data anywhere within thenetworked system SeMSy®. Operational procedures andcomplex controls can be stored within the system, allowingstaff a highly comfortable and intuitive operation. Thegraphic user interface, into which site plans of the stadiumscan be integrated, provides every operator a quick overviewof the cameras and corresponding monitors through agraphic complete overview.

In order to make the operation even more convenient, thesystem can be expanded by an ergonomic videomanagement centre, the VMC-1 "Eagle". Clearly arrangedacross its three components (Joystick, Jog-Shuttle andkeyboard with monitor) it combines all the functionalitiesthat can be expected from a modern video managementsystem. Using the Jog-Shuttle it is easy to find specificimages within video sequences. By turning the Jog-Dialsecurity operators can conveniently navigate throughindividual frames. The joystick of the VMC-1 “Eagle" alsoallows for the easy control of PTZ cameras. Pan, tilt andzoom movements can thus be carried out intuitively. Moreover, the joystick can also be used to navigate throughthe on-screen menu of the management system. Whatdistinguishes the VMC-1 “Eagle” is the possibility to displayboth recorded image material as well as live pictures on theintegrated monitor. Site plans and search functions can alsobe displayed.

Exterior surveillance

In order to round off the security concept, the Cam_inPIX®cameras are often also used across the outdoor areas of thestadium. Depending on the area of application eitherhigh-speed PTZ dome cameras, box cameras orvandal-resistant dome cameras are used. The latter providefor safety and security in sensitive areas, too. Therefore thecomplete surroundings of the stadiums, including streets, access roads and train stations, are also reliably monitored.

Flexible for future developments

Owing to the flexible IP solutions it is no problem to workacross-site so that existing stadiums can be interconnectedat a later date and controlled via one joint central controlstation. In Greece for instance 22 stadiums run together inone control centre, the supervisor monitoring centre.

Owing to the open system architecture of the Dallmeiersystem the video system remains flexible and scaleable.Future expansions or modifications are easily possible.Hence the stadium solutions by Dallmeier offer long-terminvestment protection.
