Class 9 Chemistry Worksheet -1
ATOM is the smallest particle of an element which can take part in a chemical reaction.
ELEMENT is a pure substance made up of one kind of atoms having same atomic
number and cannot be broken into two or more substances.
PROTONS
Atom consists of ELECTRONS
NEUTRONS
Protons and neutrons are in the centre or nucleus of the atom. Protons are positively
charged. Neutrons are neutral. Electrons revolve around the nucleus in various shells.
Electrons are negatively charged.
Atomic number [Z]= No. of protons = No. of electrons
Mass number [A] = No. of protons + No. of neutrons
A Z = p = e
Z A = p + n
Rules for distribution of electrons in various shells
1. Maximum number of electrons in each shell is 2n2, where n= no. of shell.
2. Outer most shell cannot have more than 8 electrons.
Shells are designated as : K, L, M, N, {n=1,2,3,4…}
Maximum no. of electrons : 2 8 18 32
Electronic configuration is distribution of electrons in different shells. e.g.
Z = 11 A = 23
-
Protons = 11
Neutrons = 23 – 11 = 12
Electrons = 11
Electronic configuration = 2,8,1
Valence shell is the outer most shell.
Valence electrons are the electrons in the outer most shell.
Metals have 1,2,3 valence electrons. Non metals have 5,6,7 valence electrons.
Inert gases have completely filled shells.
ANSWER THE FOLLOWING
1. Write the number of electrons, protons and neutrons present in
a)
b)
Also write their electronic configuration
2. Elements A,B,C have atomic numbers 9,20,10 respectively. State which one is
i. A metal
ii. A non-metal
iii. An inert gas
3. Write the mass number and atomic number of an atom having 16 neutrons and
15 protons
4. Write the number of neutrons in the nucleus of an atom having atomic number
17 and mass number 37.
5. Draw the atomic structure of magnesium having atomic number 12 and mass
number 24.

Class 9 Biology Worksheet -1
The cell is the basic structural, functional, and biological unit of all known organisms. A cell is the smallest unit of life Cells were discovered by Robert Hooke in 1665, Cell theory, first developed in 1839 by Matthias Jakob Schleiden and Theodor Schwann, states that all organisms are composed of one or more cells, that cells are the fundamental unit of structure and function in all living organisms, and that all cells come from pre-existing cells. The Three main parts of the Cell are:-
1) Cell membrane 2) Cytoplasm 3) Nucleus
BASIC STRUCTURE OF PLANT AND ANIMAL CELL
The main differences between plant cell and animal cell are as follows:-
1) The plant cell consist of cell wall whereas it is absent in animal cell. 2) The plant cell consist of large vacuole whereas animal cell consist of small
vacuoles. 3) Plastids are present only in plant cell where as it is absent in animal cell. 4) Centrosomes are present only in animal cell whereas it is absent in plant cell
Cell organelles and its Functions Cell Membrane
Separates contents of the cell from its surroundings
Regulates the entry of certain solutes and ions
Maintain the shape of animal cell

Cytoplasm Different organelles contained in it perform different functions All metabolic activities occur in it
Nucleus Centre of the cytoplasm in animal cell. Regulates cell functions Contains chromosomes, made of genes, which control hereditary characteristics
Mitochondria Spherical, rod-shaped dispersed in the cytoplasm Produces ATP which acts as energy currency for the cell
Endoplasmic reticulum Irregular network of tubular double membrane distributed over the entire cell cytoplasm Folding of proteins Transport of synthesized proteins
Golgi apparatus Stacks of flattened membrane sacs located near the nucleus Modification and export of proteins
Vacuoles Fluid-filled or solid-filled and membrane-bounded spaces in the cell cytoplasm Store water and other substances, food, pigments and waste products Provides turgidity to the cells
Lysosomes Simple, tiny, single membrane bound sacs dispersed in cell cytoplasm Digest and remove wastes from the cell
Ribosomes Dense, spherical, small granules, either scattered in the cytoplasm or attached to the
outside of endoplasmic reticulum Synthesise proteins
Plastids (only in plant cells) Oval, spherical and disc-shaped dispersed in cell cytoplasm Site for manufacture and storage of important chemical compounds used by the cell
Assignment:- 1) Define cell. 2) Who discovered cell? 3) Who gave cell theory? State It. 4) Write differences between animal cell and plant cell. 5) Write the Functions of the following cell organelles:-
o Nucleus o Cytoplasm o Mitochondria o Ribosomes o Cell Membrane o Vacoules
Note:- Revise the diagram of animal cell and plant cell and draw it.
