The X-‐Report ST. XAVIER SCHOOL MONTHLY NEWSLETTER
Issue
06 March 2010
The mission of St. Xavier Catholic
School is to educate the whole personbody, mind, and
spirit in Christian values in accordance with our Catholic faith tradition.
in the desert. In the catholic religion we call this liturgical season lent. Conventionally lent, it is described as being forty days long. The forty days represent the time that, according to the Bible, Jesus spent in the desert before the beginning of his public ministry, where he endured temptation by Satan, in each one of the temptations Jesus quoted scripture in order to overcome the temptation. Lent is also known for days of fasting and abstinence from animal flesh, such as Ash Wednesday and Good Friday as well as every other Friday in lent. During lent it is also a common practice to give up a material item that we let get in the way of
our relationship to God, by doing this, it allows us to get closer to God. Often as teenagers we like to give up stupid things, like wearing pants, or giving up the use of
in order to move closer in our relationship to God, is pretty serious business.

again, and this years track teams are larger and better than years past. The high school team is coached by Eric Powers, and the junior high team is coached by Tom Silovsky. With track meets starting in April the teams have plenty of time to prepare for the events in which our mighty rams will be competing in this year. With new track uniforms and more players participating, coach powers hopes that this will help us put more points on the board at the track meets we go to, rather than only a few points here and there
from one person placing in the event in which they participate. The middle school also hopes to achieve this same goal, with the help of eighth graders, Katelin Silovsky, Alex Wood, Kelli McCann, Kim Keating, Myranda Carr, Joseph Balderrama, Keon Jackson, Seth Carpenter, and Steven Matthews. Good luck and have a great season Rams!
Sports with Alex Davis
On Wednesday, March 10, 2010, St. Xavier held a pot-‐luck banquet to honor the athletes who participated in winter basketball. Among the great food and lively conversation, awards were given to participants. Special awards such as most improved, most inspirational, most valuable player, and a sixth man award was given out. In the high school, junior co-‐capitan Dylan Moon received the Defensive Most Improved, and Team Inspiration. Junior team captain Alex Davis received Offensive Most Improved. Sophomore Killian Wood received Offensive Most Valuable Player. Freshman Caleb Flores received the Offensive Most Valuable Player Award. Freshman Joshua Pearce received the Sixth Man Award, for being a valuable asset to the Rams scoring ability, even though he
was not a regular starter. The junior high was also honored that night with the same awards, eighth grader Alex Wood received the Most Valuable Player award for the junior high girls, and Tony Reese was
team. Most Inspirational was awarded to
team and sixth grader, Tyler Tanguay for the boys. Most Improved was given to sixth graders, Abby McConnell and Simon Englehardt. Even though not every player received a plaque or medal, every person who participated this season received a certificate. Go Rams!
8th Grade
The eighth grade is just
getting started on a poetry
unit. The unit is broken into
groups of poems that focus
on specific techniques
(alliteration, rhyme,
etc.). As we finish each
group of poems, the
students will be given a
poetry writing assignment
that uses those same
techniques. By the time we
have finished the unit, each
student will have composed
ten to twelve poems. Those
poems will be collected into
an anthology of each
9th Grade
The ninth grade is
currently reading The
Odyssey by Homer. This
selection is an epic poem,
so we are doing the reading
aloud in class so that we
can discuss it as we
read. The version in the
ninth grade text is edited,
so we should be done by
the first week of
April. Students will have a
test and a project to
complete once we finish the
reading.
10th Grade
The tenth grade just
finished Julius Caesar and is
getting ready to move on to
their novel unit. The novel
they will be reading is To Kill
a Mockingbird by Harper
Lee. This unit will last for
several weeks, and it will be
our main focus in class. We
will still do weekly
vocabulary. All of the work
associated with the novel
will need to be complete by
Friday, April 16. The test
will be on Monday, April 19,
and the paper will be due
on Tuesday, April
20. Students will received
an assignment sheet at the
start of the unit that clearly
states what is expected in
the unit and when
everything is due.
MRS. DINSMORE
The junior/senior
Theology class will be hosting
a Passover Seder Meal on
Sunday, March 28th at 6
pm. This meal is for the
benefit of the sophomore
class studying the Old
Testament and for the RCIA
candidates and their
sponsors in preparing to
join the church for Easter.
The meal re-‐creates the
Last Supper that Jesus had
with His apostles which
was a Jewish Feast Day,
Passover. The meal is a re-‐
telling of how God
redeemed His people
from slavery in Egypt. Jesus
takes this further by
showing how He is sent to
redeem people from their
slavery to sin.
The meal has symbolic
ceremonial foods and will be
followed by a potluck
supper with traditional
Jewish music.
Lent: As part of our
spiritual growth, middle and
high school students
have been attending
Stations of the Cross on
Wednesdays after Mass. We
follow the path Jesus
took, carrying His cross to
Calvary, His death and
burial. At each of the
fourteen stations we are
reminded of what He
suffered and there is a
prayerful meditation for us to
reflect upon.
During Holy Week,
students will be asked to
examine their conscience,
reflect on areas that may
need to be worked on in their
lives and offered
a chance to confess their
sins privately with Father Al.

about World War II. The 8th grade U.S. History class is studying the
view during the Civil War. The 7th grade Geography class is now
reading about Latin America. In World History they are studying
about World War I.
Spanish I
In the past few months,
the Spanish I class has been
learning to speak, read, and
write basic Spanish. Last
semester they learned the
basics of a Spanish sentence.
This semester they have
begun to learn how to make
their sentences a little bit
more complex with grammar
that includes reflexive verbs,
stem-‐changing verbs, subject
-‐verb agreements, and
adjective agreements. They
must also use in their
sentences what they have
learned from the last
semester. They have
learned so many things since
the beginning of school.
From greeting someone to
describing someone as well
as themselves, learning the
different members of the
family, the different parts of
a house, the different parts
of the body, and now they
are learning about clothes.
The students will be
presenting to the two
Spanish classes a fashion
show. We are looking
forward to the fashion shows
