Reflec on
The Gospel story today is a message of rejec on. When Jesus gave a profound teaching in the synagogue in Nazareth, his rela ves and townspeople
rejected Him because they believed he was only a carpenter. Some even said Jesus was out of his mind. Their minds were so closed that it prompted Jesus to say, “A prophet is only despised in his own country, among his own rela ves, and in his own house.”
Because of their closed minds and their rejec on of Jesus, they never did find out who He really was, the living Son of God. When Jesus speaks and we listen, we are led into the mystery of life. Help us to be open and receiving. Are we like the townspeople? Do we emphasize the weaknesses of others with unkind words while we discount their strengths?
Dear Parishioners,
Prophets uproot us from our complacency in today’s society as in the me of Jesus. Prophets iden fy the “signs of the mes,” poin ng out where God wants us to give our me and a en on. As bap zed people of God, we share the prophe c mission of Jesus to bring reconcilia on to an alienated world.
A few memorable prophets of our day: Cesar Chavez spoke up for the rights of the United Farm Workers; Mar n Luther King relessly worked for racial equality; Dorothy Day worked with and for the poor; Mother Theresa worked with the outcasts and the dying. We, too, are invited by Jesus to walk humbly with Him and pray to receive the faith and courage to be a prophe c witness each day. May God bless you.
Sincerely yours, Sister Noreen, Pastoral Associate
