For "no human being will be justified in
his sight" by deeds prescribed by the law,
for through the law comes the knowledge
of sin. 21 But now, apart from law, the
righteousness of God has been disclosed,
and is attested by the law and the
prophets, 22 the righteousness of God
through faith in Jesus Christ1 for all who believe. For there is no distinction, 23 since all have sinned and
fall short of the glory of God; 24 they are now justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption
that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a sacrifice of atonement1 by his blood, effective
through faith. He did this to show his righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed
over the sins previously committed; 26 it was to prove at the present time that he himself is righteous and
that he justifies the one who has faith in Jesus.1 27 Then what becomes of boasting? It is excluded. By
what law? By that of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28 For we hold that a person is justified by faith
apart from works prescribed by the law. Romans 3:20-28
Commemoration of the Reformation is
Sunday October 29, 2017
Prelude music at 9:15 a.m.
Worship begins at 9:30 a.m.
As the 500th anniversary of the reformation draws near, we are reminded of God’s love for us. Luther
changed the world and changed religious beliefs around the world. As Christian Lutherans in the world
today, we continue to lift up the banner of Christ and scripture. Justification and salvation is given to
humanity through faith alone, sola fide. For justification and salvation depend only on God’s mercy; and
this can be received only in an act of faith.
Having received justifying grace means that we are blessed right here and now for Christ is with us and
in us. We have been washed in the blood of the lamb, freed and forgiven of sin that is the fruit of faith.
But Luther also explains, “God’s justifying forgiveness is partially dependent on the person having
taken up the battle of the Spirit against the flesh. If this battle is missing and a person persists in gross
sins, then they are not a Christian and they do not stand under God’s forgiveness. Accordingly, Luther
declares positively that new obedience, the battle with sin, good works, and love make us and others
certain that our faith is true and thereby that we are saved.”i
The battle against sin is constant for us as we all fall short of the glory of God. I encourage you to
consider how the Spirit is guiding your life in Christ. If you know the area of your life that is suffering
in sin, you have the opportunity for spiritual growth and the promise of forgiveness. I encourage you to
read your bibles and grow in faith through the Word of God. Galatians 3:11 Now it is evident that no
one is justified before God by the law; for "The one who is righteous will live by faith."
I hope that you will invite others to come and celebrate their life in Christ as we commemorate the
Protestant and the call to discipleship in the Lutheran Church. We are planning a special service of
commemoration and confirmation. Rev. Alfred Buehner and I are planning a dialogue style sermon and
the liturgy will include the promises spoken from the Lutheran Bishop (LWF) and Pope Francis.
God’s Peace,

WOMEN of the ELCA (WELCA) at ST. PAUL NEWS
WELCA started off with an exciting group in both Faith and Eve Circle Bible Study. Faith Circle
leader, Wanda Gore gave us a short history of WELCA, about the beginning and purpose of Women of
the ELCA. In addition, reminding us that all women are of the church and WELCA. Everyone is
excited to start the study on Ruth at our next meeting on Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at 11:00 in the
Library. Please bring your Bible and a bag lunch.
Eve Circle also had a great group of ladies for the first meeting after the summer break. Thanks goes
out to MaryPat Forgie for leading this Bible Study Group for many years. A new leader, Helen
Magnuson was selected and installed at the Fall Luncheon of September 16, 2017. Congratulations to
Helen and praying for her leadership in sharing God’s word. Eve Circle will meet on alternate months
in the church library and a restaurant. The October 12, 2017 meeting will be at Cheddar’s Restaurant at
7173 N. Davis Hwy at 6:00 p.m. They will be discussing an article from Gather Magazine. Please let
Helen know if you would like the article emailed to you.

HOSPITALITY “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without
knowing it”. Hebrews 13:2
As the summer comes to an end and “Fall” is in the air, the BBQ Sandwich Fundraiser was a big hit.
Thank you to all who pre-ordered (132) and those who showed up to support this great event. As
always, the Fellowship Committee works very hard to please and make your day special.
Thank you to all who served as host for Hospitality hour in September, it is greatly appreciated. The
“volunteer” list has been a bit light for the last few months, please consider signing up to serve on a
Sunday. The joy received from serving others is nothing short of a blessing. If you have never served,
but always think about it, just sign up. You will have a “sponsor host” there to walk you through
everything. You will never be left alone!
Reformation Sunday is October 29. Hospitality Committee will be planning a reception for this
celebration. There will be a sign-up sheet with opportunities to help. If you are able to assist in this
event, we welcome you.
As always, it is a JOY and HONOR to serve in GOD’S HOUSE!
God’s Peace,
Brenda

SOCIAL MINISTRY Greetings from the Social Ministries committee! If you’ve been wanting to jump into volunteer
opportunities with us, now is the time, because we have plenty of chances coming up!!
Our monthly Manna collection this month will focus on canned fruits and vegetables. Remember, you
don’t have to wait until the day we collect to bring in your donation…you can bring it in any time and
leave it in the Manna cart! Mission Sunday will be October 8th, so grab a few extra cans on your next
trip to the grocery store and bring them in!
Mark your calendars for October 14th at 8am, because we’ll be doing our part for God’s Work Our
Hands! We will be working at Mt. Zion Cemetery once again, and with only one more section to clear
out, we’ll need all the hands we can get to chop, cut, clear, and bag. Bring your yard tools, work gloves,
sturdy shoes, pants and energy, we will provide drinks and snacks. For more information, contact
Deacon Glenn, and look for a sign up sheet coming soon!
*The volunteer form required by UWF for cemetery clean-up may be found on the last 2 pages of
this newsletter. Please fill out and return to a member of Social Ministries prior to Oct. 14th.
With the Christmas season coming up, it’s once again time to start thinking about the Tree of Warmth.
