St. Paul Lutheran Church and School The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod
Fifth Sunday in Lent
April 7, 2019
As We Gather...The absolute power of God—do you doubt it? Does it comfort you? Does it terrify you? In the midst of suffering and tragedy, in the clutches of a forceful world of violence and oppression, you may doubt the power of God. Or perhaps in the face of these things, you faithfully trust in God’s power to ultimately overcome and give you the victory. Or maybe you recognize your unworthiness to stand before God and His power is not seen as comforting, but threatening. Today we will consider how God uses His power in ways that are graciously surprising to us and the world around us.

Pre-Service Music Opening Hymn Invocation Baptism (11am) Confession and Absolution Hymn of Praise Salutation Prayer of the Day
Ringing of the Bells and Lighting of Candles 8am & 11am “Zion’s Walls,” (Aaron Copeland) by Living Word Lutheran High School A Cappella Choir “Glory Be to Jesus” LSB 433 St. 1-3
Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the † Son and of the Holy Spirit. People: Amen. of Henry “Hank” Kenneth Akright Pastor: In humility and faith, let us come before the Lord, counting everything as loss
for the sake of knowing Christ Jesus, our Lord. People: We count all things as rubbish, in order that we may gain Christ and be found in Him.
Pastor: If righteousness before God were to depend on our obedience of the Law, we would all be lost and condemned forever.
People: But our righteousness depends on faith alone; therefore, we trust in Christ, who suffered, died, and rose again for us.
Pastor: Confident in the work of our Savior, we confess our sins to God our Father.
Silence for reflection and confession.
Pastor: Father in heaven, be merciful to me, a sinner. People: Father in heaven, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to
everlasting life. Amen.
Pastor: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the † Son and of the Holy Spirit.
People: Amen. “Glory Be to Jesus” LSB 433 St. 4-6 Pastor: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Pastor: Let us pray. Almighty God, by Your great goodness, mercifully look upon Your
people that we may be governed and preserved evermore in body and soul; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
People: Amen.

Wednesday’s Lenten Meal Details Date & Time: April 10, 5:15pm to 6:15pm Hosted by: Board of Elders Menu: Brats, burgers, chips, baked beans,
desserts, milk, coffee and water Cost: Adults—$6; Family—$20; Children 6 and Older—$3; Children 5 and under—Free Where does the money earned from this meal go? The Elders are a group of appointed men in our congregation that assist the Pastors and make decisions on important church matters. The funds raised from the meal will be used for the HDMI Pulpit system upgrade.
The “IF’s” of Lent: The Threatening “IF” If you release this man you are not a friend of Caesar’s.
-John 19:12
Threatening IF’s are common. “If you don’t do this, then you are not a part of the group.” “If you are known as a Christian, you can be labeled as a Jesus freak.” Or we have seen many asked “Are you a Christian?” then told, “Then you will be killed.” Pilate was being threatened with being labeled as no friend of Caesar, a very serious charge at the time. This decision by Pilate would label him for all eternity as the one who crucified Jesus. As you face those “threatening If’s” in your life, ask the Lord for the strength to make the right stand for your faith. Pilate failed to listen, even to his wife. May you, with the help of God, stand ready to do what is right no matter what the consequences may appear to be. -Pastor Wendorf
