Being a midwife is an exciting and rewarding role. As one of Australia’s leading private

Employment with us while you study at university will enable you to develop the knowledge
and skills required to practice as a midwife. The St John of God Hospital Subiaco midwifery
program is aligned with Western Australian tertiary institutions, with intakes throughout
the year.
Nurses are paid at their substantive level (or the highest Level 1 increment for existing Level
2 and above nurses) whilst undertaking all St John of God Hospital Subiaco courses.

The selection and recruitment process
Program eligibility~ Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA).
~ Enrolment in tertiary midwifery studies
~ Evidence of ability to work in Australia
This structured 12 month development program is open to newly graduated midwives.
Internal and external applicants may apply. There is no cost to undertake this program
which includes rotations throughout the Maternity Unit, study days and learning and
development support.
Other midwifery opportunities include:
Lactation course
Available for midwives and nurses wanting to update their knowledge in breastfeeding
management and for those intending to sit their IBLCE examinations.
Practical placements
St John of God Hospital Subiaco offers placements for the practical component of the
re-registration course. Support is offered to registered midwives wishing to upskill in the
acute sector.
Nurses and assistants
Opportunities for registered nurses, enrolled nurses and patient care assistants are
also available.
The Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Newborn Services Directorate features an 11 bed
birthing suite, birthing suite theatre for emergencies, electro fetal monitoring service,
26 cot level 2 neonatal unit, 56 private rooms on antenatal/postnatal floor and 17 dual
role rooms that can be used for obstetrics/women’s health.
The Maternity Unit also includes a lactation service, parent education, preadmission
clinic, perinatal and infant mental health service, home visiting and support groups.
