“If you build it, he will come.” These seven
words, written first in the novel Shoeless
Joe by W. P. Kinsella and then made famous by the
1989 movie Field of Dreams, dared an entire genera-
tion to embrace its fondest hopes and pursue them
fearlessly. Over the past few years, the St. Francis
Episcopal Day School Board and community have
done some fearless dreaming of our own, and
watched as our bold pursuit has, indeed, brought
dreams to life.
Empowered by the generosity of St. Francis
families and friends—and using our strategic plan
as a road map—we purchased 23 acres on South
Piney Point Road in 2011; worked with architects
and contractors; and watched as the grounds and
existing buildings began to take on new life. In
September 2013, we completed the first building
phase, and students began practicing on the South
Campus’s two new athletics fields.
There’s so much more to come for St. Francis on
the South Campus—from Primary School cottages
to a field house to an academic building designed
for immersion learning—but I’d be remiss if I didn’t
pause here to thank all of the volunteers and staff
members who have helped us accomplish so much
thus far. I especially want to acknowledge the
incredible leadership that Associate Head of School
and Head of Physical Education and Athletics Don
Hicks has shown at St. Francis over the years. His
unwavering commitment to excellence; his wise
planning and vision; and his genuine love of our
students have spurred St. Francis athletics into an
incredibly robust program—so robust, in fact, that
it outgrew our facilities! I am so grateful that our
students and coaches now have the fields they need
for practice and play.
We held the ribbon-cutting for the South Cam-
pus fields on January 8, 2014, and immediately
afterward our St. Francis Wolves dominated their
competition in the first official game there. As I
watched that soccer match, I couldn’t help but
remember Ray Kinsella, Field of Dreams’ main char-
acter. Through courage and faith, he transformed a
cornfield into a living wonder, and I felt so hon-
ored to be on the South Campus with many of you,
watching our very own Field of Dreams come true.

When St. Francis Episcopal Day School’s A Time
to Grow capital campaign raised half of its
$21 million goal last spring, our community cele-
brated the milestone with Halfway Day, complete
with creative half hairstyles, outfits, and classroom
activities, plus a cake that was half chocolate and
half vanilla. By all reports, our students had a blast.
Yet, as chair of the St. Francis
Board of Trustees and especially
as a St. Francis parent, I am grate-
ful that halfway is an unusual con-
cept for our school. Our students
and faculty simply aren’t known
for quitting halfway to the end.
Rather, St. Francis is known
for its commitment to giving
its all—always. Like all good
schools, that commitment pervades our teachers,
administrators, curriculum, and programs. And,
as with all great schools, this pursuit of excellence
characterizes our community and fuels its sense of
the power and responsibility of the individual to
improve the whole.
I see this dedication to community reflected at
St. Francis continually. For example, in 2013–14:
•Numerous Middle School students and faculty
explored the global challenge of poverty and
worked to reduce it as participants in the
St. Francis C.A.R.E.S. program.
• Several of our St. Francis families took the
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program/
Food Stamp Challenge to get a taste of what
life is like for millions of low-income Ameri-
cans who struggle to put food on the table.
•Third and fourth graders raised funds for
Ascension School, our partner school in Pouly,
Haiti, through their Relief Through Reading
fundraising effort.
•Middle School art students partnered with the
Dec My Room nonprofit organization to hand-
craft 60 tie-dyed body pillowcases for Texas
Children’s Hospital patients.
•The City of Houston celebrated “Wolves
Against Hunger of St. Francis Episcopal Day
School Day” on August 20, 2013. Mayor Annise
Parker issued the proclamation in honor of
the seven St. Francis students who won the
national Lead2Feed World Hunger Leadership
Challenge in May 2013 and presented their
$25,000 award check to a local hunger-relief
charity.
These are just a few of the ways St. Francis
students, faculty, and friends have demonstrated
their commitment to being contributing members
of the local community and beyond. But schools
can’t truly prepare students to be good citizens just
by emphasizing service. Solving global challenges
requires creative thinking, physical fitness, tech-
nological adeptness, environmental sensitivity, and
an awareness of how people live in other cultures
and countries. That’s why St. Francis students are
exposed to a wide array of experiences both on and
off campus.
In 2013–14, students planted trees as part of
Global Cooperation Day; explored computer
science during the largest learning event in world
history, the Hour of Code; practiced and played
on our new South Campus athletics fields; and
learned about their digital footprint. They also
created a school bookstore as part of the eighth-
grade business class; explored the world through
performances by the Peking Acrobats, the Hous-
ton Museum of Natural Science Wildlife on Wheels
program, the Texian Time Machine, ARTS ALIVE!,
and numerous other groups; won championships
in basketball, wrestling, and lacrosse; and much,
much more.
As St. Francis continues to raise funds for the
A Time to Grow capital campaign and to expand its
horizons on the South Campus, I feel privileged to
serve a community that never does anything half-
way. Together, we will continue the time-honored
St. Francis tradition of pursuing what’s best with
wholehearted excellence.

It took two weeks for the students to com-
plete the multi-step tie-dye process during
Visual Arts Teacher Amy Chandler’s classes.
From tying the cases to applying the dye and
finally rinsing, washing, and stuffing them,
the students put their personal touches on
each creation, finishing them with a penned
message for the pillow’s future recipient.
“Our students really came together for this
cause,” said Mrs. Chandler. “The pillows will
be a daily reminder to these young patients
that other children are thinking of them and
wishing them the very best.”
Mrs. Plank of Dec My Room echoed this
sentiment. “Often our youth think that they
can’t make a difference at their age, but that
is so far from the truth,” she said. “These stu-
dents put in over 300 service hours to bring
smiles to the faces of so many Texas Children’s
patients. On this very special day, they truly
touched lives.”
Head of Middle School Stephen Lovejoy
joined Mrs. Chandler, Mrs. French, and
several St. Francis eighth graders and Dec My
Room volunteers on February 1 to hand out
the comfy body pillows to patients at TCH.

St. Francis students joined heart and hand with local nonprofit Dec My Room in a
mission to brighten the day of young patients at Texas Children’s Hospital (TCH). In
honor of the hospital’s 60th birthday, Middle School students in fifth through eighth
grade tie-dyed 60 body pillowcases in vivid, cheerful hues, then delivered them to
patients at the hospital on February 1, 2014. The birthday project was the brainchild
of alumni parent and Dec My Room Founder Susan Plank and Director of Grants
and Corporate Partnerships Kathy French.

The Dec My Room team’s ongoing
mission is to decorate the hospital
rooms of young patients undergoing
extended stays at Texas Children’s
Cancer Center and M. D. Anderson
Cancer Center in Houston, as well as
hospitals in Los Angeles and, most recently, Boston. By partnering with the
nonprofit to personalize these “homes away from home,” our St. Francis
students hoped to enhance morale and, ultimately, the healing process—a
goal we think they accomplished with flying colors!
The St. Francis C.A.R.E.S. (Chil-dren Actively Remaking Economic Situations) program was estab-lished in spring 2013 to lead our school-wide, student-driven poverty initiative, which tasks students with researching causes and effects of poverty in order to develop real-world solutions to remedy the global epidemic.
With a particular focus on need in Brazil, Haiti, India, and Swaziland, St. Francis students, faculty, and administrators spent the 2013–14 school year in active collaboration
with peers around the world. Lower School students learned about the poverty plight through guest speak-ers, Skype sessions, and group reading, in addition to an end-of-year presentation by the Middle School C.A.R.E.S. activity group.
Fifth graders video-conferenced with K. L. International School in Meerut, India, to discuss hardship in India and at home. Sixth grade kept busy through a project-based learn-ing initiative about Brazil, studying the ins and outs of life in Rio and its favelas, where the poverty-stricken

reside. The seventh-grade team set its sights on Haiti, and was fascinated to hear about Middle School Science Teacher Kay Rhea’s summer mission experiences, as well as Dr. Lair’s recent trek to our sister school in the central plateau there (accompanied by Head of Lower School Elisse Hayes and Head of Marketing and Communi-cations Joy Hilley). Eighth graders researched Swaziland and kicked off their projects with a challenge to interview a stranger whose income falls near the poverty line,
then create an iMovie video on their findings. Finally, our Middle School councils joined forces via Skype and Google Docs with a group at the Escola Americana (American School) in Rio de Janeiro to discuss poverty and possible solutions that students, as informed citizens, can put into place.
St. Francis students stand together as people for others com-mitted to a belief as simple as it is sincere: Big dreams have a way of starting small.
SteP By StePThe Making of Model Digital Citizens
On February 4, 2014, the FBI paid a visit to St. Francis.
Thankfully, it was for the much-anticipated Monitoring
Your Child’s Digital Footprint presentation to St. Francis
parents! Our visitors also spoke with students in grades
3–8 on how to stay safe in a digital world spilling over with
texts, tweets, posts, and apps.
Covering such topics as cyberbullying, the posting of inap-
propriate material, and how to keep private information private,
Agent Russell Ackley—a member of the Houston Child Exploitation
Task Force—advised parents and faculty on how to protect children
from the latest online threats. His talks with students further
focused on creating a positive and protected digital presence. A
helpful handout and follow-up access to online Internet safety tutori-
als rounded out this reminder that we are no less called to walk in Christ’s
footsteps in the online world than in the real one.

thanks to the heart and hard work of
co-chairs Clarke Anderson and Lee
Zieben ’90, plus the support of dozens
of volunteers and event sponsors, St. Francis’s
inaugural Sporting Clays Classic was a real
blast! On November 18, 2013, the Greater
Houston Gun Club bustled
with the big-hearted enthu-
siasm of 120 marksmen
enjoying the day’s clay
shoot and flurry competi-
tion, lunch, silent auction,
cocktail reception, and
awards ceremony.
Participants took part
in the event’s challenge
and camaraderie while shooting
for a lofty goal: raising money for the
Patrick Nicosia C.A.R.E. Fund, which supports
cultural, academic, and recreational enrich-
ment opportunities for St. Francis students
who otherwise might not be able to participate.
Established in 2013, the fund honors the mem-
ory of Patrick Nicosia, a passionate outdoors-
man and school volunteer whose dedication to
providing students with the finest enrichment
opportunities was a true inspiration to the
St. Francis community.
Taking home the individual Highest Overall
Score awards were Marcus Pullicino for the
men and Jane Scott for the women. The team of
Michael Osowski, Mel Parks, Ricky Wright, and
Gary Jewel won the Highest Overall Team Score
award with 294 hits, and the team of Brett
Chiles, John Reily Thomason, John Flourney,
and Billy Murphy took home the Team Flurry
Competition Award with a score of 78 out of a
possible 100.

everything is bigger and better at
St. Francis—and the 2014 Festival Day,
themed Don’t Mess With Festival, was
no exception. On April 27, 2014, the
grounds of St. Francis transformed into a Wild
West wonderland full of themed rides, games,
prizes, and food. Buckaroos young and young
at heart were challenged to eight seconds on
the mechanical bull. Those who stood still long
enough risked getting hauled off to the Festival
Jail, the friendliest lockup in the South. Heck,
some folks even got lassoed by a stilt-walking
cowboy!
Meanwhile, other partners loosened their
belt buckles for barbecue beef sandwiches
and tasty tacos. And everyone looked skyward
during the Helicopter Ball Drop, when 730 golf
balls were tossed from a helicopter by Dr. Lair.
Five lucky winners took home prizes!
Texas-size pride was definitely on display at
the annual One Community Fund event that
benefits both St. Francis Episcopal Church
and St. Francis Episcopal Day School each year.
Special thanks go out to Festival Chairs Kelly
Huff, Anne Smith, Charlotte Sullivan, and Kris
Vallee for working tirelessly on the afternoon
of fellowship, fun, and fundraising. And to our
generous underwriters, booth sponsors, Big
Board winners, golf ball purchasers, and, most
importantly, volunteers—thank you for making
Festival Day 2014 one for the memory books.

Scholarships act as a lifeline to many who hope to attend
St. Francis or to remain here. Without financial aid, nearly
ten percent of our student population would disappear.
Due to the generosity of the following individuals, we can
continue to help deserving students.

development opportunities to over sixty St. Francis
faculty members. Woolrich Awards have funded
an incredible range of adventures, from dinosaur
digs to explorations of cave art to tours of the Holy
Roman Empire.
Thanks to the generous support of the St. Fran-
cis community, Woolrich-funded travels, training,
and artifacts have equipped our teachers to bring
classroom learning to life. By transforming words
on a page into tangible experiences, they ignite
in St. Francis students a passion for learning and
service—introducing them to a whole new world of
possibilities.

Reviving a lost art was
on the minds of Middle
and Lower School
art instructors Amy
Chandler and Emily
Arnot as they traveled
to the Seattle area this
past summer to study
encaustic painting. Here they attended Encausti-
Camp, a week-long course highlighting the ancient
skill of heating beeswax colored with pigment and
applying it to a surface such as wood or canvas.
The camp provided Amy and Emily with the expe-
rience, resources, and tools to bring this timeless
technique to our artists at St. Francis. In addition,
the two traveled to Victoria, British Columbia, to
visit the Royal British Columbia Museum, as well as
several other local art attractions.
FiFth-GRade spanish and cuLinaRY scienceMaria Cruzalegui-Reardon
As one of St. Francis’s culinary science teachers,
Maria Cruzalegui-Reardon dreamed of not only
enlarging the class’s small hydroponic garden, but
also integrating related agriculture
lessons into the school’s science
curriculum. Through a two-week
internship with Invernaderos del
Mundo—Viva! in Peru, she learned
advanced hydroponic gardening
methods and helped to donate
locally grown produce within the
community. Maria then spent a week in Chile vol-
unteering with a Habitat for Humanity team tasked
with preparing homes for developmentally dis-
abled children. With the help of a restricted gift to
the Woolrich initiative which funded the purchase
of hydroponic and aquaponic growing systems,
Maria and other St. Francis faculty members will
work with students on campus to grow food that
will ultimately be consumed in our Dining Hall!

Janeiro on a scouting trip to create connections
and address the logistical concerns of future aid
efforts to the impoverished areas of the city. The
two educators partnered with a local school, EARJ
(the American School in Rio de Janeiro), and met
with its entire leadership team on future actions
both schools could take to aid in the reduction of
poverty. Back home, Melissa led our students in a
Skype session on campus during which students
from both schools presented proposals for solu-
tions in Rio and Houston. The relationship formed
between the two schools continues as St. Francis
students find new ways to make a difference at
home and abroad.

Scotland’s Edinburgh Festival
Fringe, the largest arts festival in
the world, played host to our
very own dramatic and per-
forming arts instructors
Lyndsay Sweeney, Julia Tra-
ber, and Carlo Minotti. Our
educators-turned-students
attended performances, lectures, and
workshops on innovative new ways to share the
art of storytelling. They also stopped in London for
performances at the world-famous Shakespeare’s
Globe and National Theatres, as well as a tour of
London’s West End, the largest theatre district in
the world. Adding to the “drama” was the fact that
Carlo’s luggage was lost and not returned until the
night before their trip home! True to form, Carlo
improvised and was able to turn a potential trag-
edy into a comedy. In all, the
experience will no doubt
enrich our drama program
and inspire stu-

When Stacy Medrano ’84 watched her last
child graduate from St. Francis in May 2014,
she knew that what she and her children would
miss most about the school was its sense of fam-
ily. “It feels like a home away from home,” says the
alumna, whose siblings and
three children are all gradu-
ates, and whose nephews still
attend. “From the carpool lane
to the hallway to the Dining
Hall to the chapel, St. Francis
is filled with warm, friendly
people who genuinely care
about you.”
Many would say that Stacy
herself embodies the same
spirit of kindness and gen-
tleness of heart typified by a
St. Francis education. Since
entering the school as a fourth
grader in 1979, she has seen her
own three children—Cole ’09,
now a sophomore at Wake For-
est University; Ben ’12, a junior
at Strake Jesuit; and Alex ’14, a
freshman at St. Agnes Acad-
emy—through the same rigors
and rewards she knew as a student. From the cama-
raderie of class trips to the magic of the eighth-grade
musical to Stacy’s own fond memories of her time
on the yearbook staff (“I looked forward to it every
day!”), she’s relived the St. Francis experience in
recent years as an active and enthusiastic volunteer.
In roles that have ranged from library helper and
team mom to Festival chair, Parents Association
president, Booster Club concessions chair, long-
time Art à la Carte docent, and Buddy Family helper,
Stacy has shared her own brand of volunteer flair
since 2004. But it’s her affin-
ity for fundraising that might
most demonstrate Stacy’s ded-
ication to her alma mater. “To
do any type of fundraising, I
feel that you have to be very
committed to the institution
and believe 100 percent in its
mission,” she says. “I have seen
the impact St. Francis has had
on all of our lives, so when I say
I believe in the quality of edu-
cation that takes place there, I
mean it!” A long-term member
of the St. Francis board of trust-
ees, she served on the develop-
ment and long-range planning
committees, among others.
Along with husband Michael,
she also chaired the St. Francis
Annual Fund leadership com-
mittee, and the couple recently
wrapped up three years as co-chairs of the A Time to
Grow capital campaign.
Of her whole-hearted capital campaign support,
Stacy says she feels the undertaking holds two-fold
value for St. Francis—first through much-needed
improvement to the Primary School and athletics
in keeping with tradition, St. francis congratulates our latest outstanding Volunteer award recipient, Stacy Medrano ’84,
whose singular commitment to St. francis stems from long-standing bonds as a student, parent, and patron.

facilities, and second by positioning St. Francis
“to take care of its students both now and in the
future.” Similarly, her efforts to help create the
Faculty Christmas and End-of-Year Collections, as
well as the Graduating Class Financial Aid Schol-
arship, work year after year to benefit St. Francis
faculty and staff and those students who otherwise
might not be able to attend our school.
As Stacy enters the next chapter in her St. Francis
story, she says she and her children take with them
the lessons learned during their years here. “My
children often talk about the teachers and coaches
at St. Francis and the positive influence they had
on their lives,” she reflects. “I truly believe that this
school makes a lasting impression on children and
helps them develop into the kind of young adults
we need in the world—confident, well educated,
and possessing an interior compass that guides
them to do what they know is right for themselves
and others.”

mentor and Student reunite:An Art-to-Art Talk Between Cathy Bussa and Addy Purdy
when St. Francis alum and aspir-ing artist Addy Purdy ’10 sat
down for a visit with retired Middle School Art Teacher Cathy Bussa in early summer 2014, it was as if time had stood still between the beloved
instructor and her former student. During their talk, Cathy and Addy reflected on the influence her St. Francis fine arts education has had on Addy’s growth as an award-winning artist—and the passion for art that the college-bound student says was first ignited during her eighth-grade year with Bussa.
Do you still have any of your St. Francis artwork? I have all my artwork starting from when you were teaching me—I’ve kept it all!
Was there anything in particular in eighth grade art that you remember enjoying a lot?I remember having sketches that were due every day, so that’s when I started using a sketchbook a lot. There’s one thing I remember that you specifically told me. I was draw-ing a bottle, and you said, “Draw the words you’re thinking in your head as you look at the bottle.” And that kind of stuck with me.
Where do you get your inspiration for what you draw?Well, with my most recent concentra-tion, I’ve gotten my inspiration from

fishing and just being offshore and my love for the ocean.
What’s your favorite medium?Oil is my favorite. I really like blend-ing my colors a lot, and acrylic just dries too fast.
okay, so I know you’re going to Texas Christian University next year. Do you plan on studying art?Oh, yes, for sure. I’m planning to get a BA in studio art. At TCU, that includes a minor in business, so you’re taking business classes with art. I’m not sure what I’ll do with that yet, but I’ll figure it out as I go. I’m considering teaching—I’m debating between middle or high school.
When I was teaching, I’d begin every school year with a review of art elements and principles. My students all would grumble, but did that help to ground you in the classical teachings of art?It did help. I can still remember basically all of them. When I was a freshman, they were all introduced again—and they were already stuck in my head.
When you think of St. Francis, what’s one thing that stands out that truly influenced your life?Lifelong friends. My best friends from my St. Francis years are still my best friends, and will be forever. Plus, I feel like I grew up here. I was a “lifer,” so it was like a second home to me.
Addy Purdy graduated from Episco-pal High School (EHS) in May 2014 and now attends TCU.
