College of Engineering

The annual Virtual Information day wasconcluded on 23 October 2021. This year,some departments delivered theiradmission talks in hybrid mode, andorganised on-campus laboratory tourswhich allowed more face-to-faceinteraction. Meanwhile, the College talk“Key to Success 城⼯‧成功” attracted morethan 200 participants.

The College and the Hong Kong AppliedScience and Technology Research Institute(ASTRI) co-hosted a Forum on AdvancedIoT and 5G Technologies and Applicationson 3 November 2021. 12 speakers from theindustry and the academia exchangedinsights on the latest research anddevelopment in advanced IoT and 5G.

The College participated in theInnoCarnival 2021 from 23 to 31 Octoberorganised by the Innovation & TechnologyCommission. Financial Secretary Mr CHANMo-po visited our booth to view the fog-powered green generator which canharvest energy and fresh water. We alsodelivered an online workshop on carbonenergy to the general public.

Dr LEUNG Mei-yung and Dr KhursheedAHMED received the Best Mental HealthPaper Award in the Joint WO99 & W123CIB International Conference 2021, aleading international conference for healthand safety for construction personnel. DrAHMED also received the 1st Runner-upaward (Best Student Paper category) in thesame conference.

Department of Materials Science andEngineering

Prof Alex JEN received a grant of ~HKD8Mfrom the HKSAR Green Tech Fund. It wasone of the eight approved projects beingselected out of more than 190 proposalssubmitted in this first round. The Fund wasset up by the Government to provide morefocused support for R&D projects to helpHK decarbonise and achieve carbonneutrality before 2050.

Dr Kostas SENETAKIS received the "2020Editorial Board Member Award" from theJapanese Geotechnical Society inrecognition of his contribution as an editorialboard member of the SCI journal Soils andFoundations.

A book titled "Walkable Cities in HighDensity China. Livable, Healthy andSustainable" by Dr Gianni TALAMINI et alwas selected to receive the Urban DesignAwards 2021 by the Hong Kong Institute ofUrban Design.

Departments of Biomedical Engineering andElectrical Engineering

Dr YU Xinge and Dr TAN Chaoliangobtained NSFC's Excellent Young ScientistsFund (Hong Kong and Macao) for theirprojects entitled "Intelligent Sensing andFeedback Technology Based on FlexibleElectronics", and “Two-DimensionalNanomaterials and Devices” respectively.The Excellent Young Scientist Fund is aprestigious award to support youngscientists in China on the frontiers ofinternational science.

Department of Biomedical Engineering

A paper titled "Shape-programmable liquidcrystal elastomer structures with arbitrarythree-dimensional director fields andgeometries" by Dr ZHANG Jiachen and hiscollaborators from Max Planck Institute forIntelligent Systems was published inNature Communications.

Department of Biomedical Engineering

A team led by PhD Student Miss CHAN HiuLing, under the supervision of Dr King LAI,received the Innovation Awards(University/Tertiary Institute category) at theCity I&T Grand Challenge organised by theInnovation and Technology Commission andthe HK Science & Technology ParksCorporation.

Department of Electrical Engineering

A team comprising Miss WEI Yang, MrWANG Hao, Mr LIU Yucheng and Mr LEEYo-che won the Work of Excellence Award(HKSAR and Macao SAR) by the Councilof the Academies of Engineering andTechnological Sciences. The award-winning project, supervised by Dr K FTSANG, was titled “Internet of ThingsMaturity Index – IoT Michelin: BestPractices”.
