SUNDAY THOUGHT
Matthew 24:37-44
As another new Church Year begins with the Season of
Advent, Jesus once again reminds us of the need to
“stay awake!” The greatest danger we face as Christians
is failing to remain focused on the really important
things in life. But what are those important things and
how do we really avoid putting too much emphasis on
the things that Jesus seems so critical of in our gospel
today? Well obviously, caring for our physical and
material needs are not wrong in themselves, but when,
as Jesus reminds us today, they become our sole
preoccupation, we have missed the point of living.
Staying awake for Jesus means more than just being
prepared for His final coming with our own death; far
more important is His coming anytime anyone is in
need of our love. What things get more attention in our
lives than they should? This is a simple question, but
one with eternal consequences. Does the television or
computer get more attention than my spouse? Does
prayer have a place in my daily life or is just for
Sundays? Does work take a higher priority than caring
for my family? Jesus’ invitation to love comes in many
disguises, so “stay awake!”

FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT NOVEMBER 27, 2016
CELEBRATING THE SAINTS
Saint Elizabeth of the Trinity, Religious (1880-1906)
Elizabeth Catez was born near Bourges, France, on
July 18, 1880. Her father, a military man, died when she
was young. Elizabeth inherited all of his verve for life,
including his bad temper. But, when she made her First
Communion at age eleven, Elizabeth encountered a
“Presence” in her soul. She felt drawn from that day
forward to silent prayer. By the age of fourteen, she had
consecrated herself to Christ.
Jesus came to her aid in the battle with her temper.
At nineteen, she could write of the moments in which she
had suffered “an unjust reproof”: “I feel as though the
blood is boiling in my veins; my being rises in revolt … but
Jesus was with me. Deep down in my heart I heard His
voice and then I was ready to bear anything for love of
Him.” Later, she gave this teaching: “Look at every
suffering and every joy as coming directly from Him, and
then your life will be a continual communion, since
everything will be like a sacrament that will give you God.”
Elizabeth planned to go to the Carmelite monastery
in Dijon. But to please her mother, she traveled, visited
with the men who came to court her, and played the piano
with rare talent. And all the while she found time for
silence, offering to God “the cell of my heart.” Around this
time, Elizabeth told a Dominican priest, with some
apprehension, that she sensed the presence of more than
one person within her. He reassured her that this was the
life that comes to each of us at baptism: the indwelling of
the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. When she entered
religious life in 1901, she received the name of Sister
Elizabeth of the Trinity.
Elizabeth lived as a Carmelite nun for only five
years, dying at the age of 26 at Dijon, France, on November
9
th
now her feast day.
