Parish Mission Statement We, the parish family of St. Anthony Roman Catholic Church welcome all, young and old, active or inactive, committed
or alienated, to enrich their lives by joining and participating in our faith community. We seek to reflect the light of Jesus
Christ by reaching out to serve all, and by sharing our joy and hope, as we continue our faith journey. May our lives,
inspired by the Holy Spirit, and nourished by the Eucharist, bear witness to our love for neighbors near and far.
ST. ANTHONY PARISH COHASSET, MA
Dear Parishioners
Almost every parish, business, agency and entity of any kind
in recent years has drawn up a mission statement, and indication
of the mission of the entity and the vision for its future. One of
the first items on the agenda of our Parish Pastoral Council some
years ago was the drawing up of our parish mission statement.
This statement is posted in the vestibule of the church, and is
printed on the front of our weekly bulletin. It not only describes
the mission of the parish, but also introduces challenges which
face the parish. Because it is printed on each bulletin, it can
easily be overlooked. We suggest that you notice this Mission
Statement and see if we are fulfilling it, and, if not, how can we
better fulfill it.
I mention this at this time, because this statement was drawn
up by our first reorganized Parish Council. When the Eighth
Synod of Boston, the gathering of laity, priests and bishop was
held in 1989, the members of the Synod decreed that all parishes
should introduce a Pastoral Council. As part of its renewal of the
Church, the Second Vatican Council called for a number of new
structures to promote active involvement and collaboration in the
mission of the Church. After the council, a new structure was
proposed by the Church to call forth in an orderly fashion the
insights and cooperation of persons at the level of the local
community. That structure is the Parish Pastoral Council.
The rationale for the Parish Pastoral Council may be found in
the Vatican Council’s Dogmatic Constitution on the Church. It
said “By reason of the knowledge, competence or preeminence
which they have, the laity are empowered—indeed sometimes
obliged—to manifest their opinion on those things which pertain
to the good of the Church. If the occasion should arise this should
be done through the institutions established by the Church for
that purpose and always with truth, courage and prudence and
with reverence for charity toward those who, by reason of their
office, represent the person of Christ.”
The members of our Parish Pastoral Council have been
elected for a three year term, with one third of the Council
elected each year. This allows for a continuity and a hold over of
two thirds of old members to greet the new ones. In becoming a
collaborative parish with St. Mary in Hull, the Parish Pastoral
Council will be a joint Council with representatives from each
parish. The Parish Finance Council will be separate with each
parish retaining its own Council.
Sincerely,
Fr John R. Mulvehill

Living our Faith Together Save the Date! Next weekend, we will be taking important steps
to enrich many life-changing ministries in our parish
communities. Life Teen Youth Ministry and other religious
education programs, Addiction Recovery Services, and Faith
Community Nursing for our homebound parishioners are
among more than 50 critical ministries supported by the 2019
Catholic Appeal. As we prepare to embark on this season of
Lent, may you prayerfully consider supporting these important
ministries. Your generosity provides nearly half the funding
for these great efforts, and every gift makes a difference.
Please find more information about this life-changing work in
today’s bulletin insert or visit our website at
bostoncatholicappeal.org to view our latest video about the
appeal. Thank you!
Many times a decline in health or inability to
drive can make getting to Church difficult or
not possible for us or our loved ones. When
such events take place in our lives then we
need to let the parish know of your situation so that we can assist with communion or the
anointing of the sick. If you or someone that
you know is in need, please contact Deacon
Paul Rooney at 781-383-0219 to schedule a
visit.

Grades 1-6
We will once again be participating in the Catholic Relief
Services (CRS) Rice Bowl program. During Lent, which begins
on Wednesday 3/6, CRS Rice Bowl invites you, your family and
community to journey together to reach out beyond ourselves to
encounter the needs of all. Starting in February we will be
distributing Rice Bowls, one for each family. We ask you to
consider $1 per day for the 40 days of lent. This would feed one
family for a month or 2 years of seed for a farmer or one
emergency kit for refugees. We will collect them at the end of
lent.
Lent starts Wednesday March 6th with Ash Wednesday. There
will be a ceremony and ash distribution on Wednesday 3/6 at 4
pm.
There will be a Family Mass the weekend of 3/10 at 9:30.

On March 2nd we will be hosting a Bingo
night fundraiser. This will be a fun filled
evening for families and all parishioners.
The youth and their parents are working
very hard to make this an amazing night. I
believe for $10.00 per person you will
receive pizza and drinks, (soda or water). desert coffee and Bingo
cards. We will have silent auction items and great prizes for
winners of each Bingo game. Please see the flyer insert. What is
important to me as the youth leader is the hard work each of us
must put into the mission. The commitment to each other. This is
not thought of as a sacrifice. This is simply a way of life. We
cannot understand the purpose of the mission if we are not willing
to work hard for it, now and especially afterwards for our entire
lives. We do not seek reward. The reward will come in the eyes
and hearts of those we work with and the humble
accomplishments of our love. We do not seek points. The point of
our mission is to grow and to be reminded that we need to justify
our lives. We remain humble and quiet with what is
accomplished. In the end it is not how much we get done. What
really counts is what we start and continue with. As it was in the
beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end.
