Pentecost Sunday May 31, 2020 THE RICHNESS OF THE SPIRIT
Students, and most adults recalling their school days, are
familiar with the phrase “compare and contrast” that shows
up from time to time on tests. Today we hear two different
accounts of the giving of the Holy Spirit to the church.
Let’s contrast, then compare. Luke’s account from Acts is
filled with arresting details: the mighty wind from heaven,
the tongues of flame, the miracle of different languages.
John’s account seems timid: fearful disciples, the wounded
Christ, the expelling of breath from his risen body, not
from the sky. Our literal, modern minds wonder which way
it happened; our noisy culture probably makes us prefer the
former. But if we compare the two, we find that the daz-
zling richness of the Spirit fills both accounts, for it is the
very breath of the risen Christ, ascended to the sky in Luke,
that appears to his disciples in John and sends his followers
forth to carry on his mission of forgiving sin and proclaim-
ing the mighty acts of God.

Western flair for Benevolent Care Fund Due to COVID-19 concerns, the annual Founders Day fund raiser for Benevolent
Care at King’s Manor Retirement Home in Hereford, Texas set for July 18, 2020 has
been canceled. This vital revenue loss spurred Wayne Dollar of Dollar’s Spurs, a vet-
eran 40-year spur maker, to handcraft his 1000th pair of spurs—a very special offer-
ing, using sterling silver, 14 karat gold and rubies. He and wife, Kris, have donated
the spurs to the Benevolent Care Fund of King’s Manor to raise money to provide
continuing care for Manor residents who have exhausted their resources to ensure
that they continue to have a home at King’s Manor. The spurs are being raffled at a
price of $100 per ticket. The drawing to be held August 18, 2020.
The spurs have a 1 1/4 inch heel band and a 2 3/4 inch shank . The 2 1/2 inch rowel has 15 spokes. The heel bands and
shanks are completely overlaid with sterling silver. Mountings atop the silver are 14 karat gold. Eight 4mm AA grade
rubies are set in gold rosettes. Hand engraving covers the precious metals. The swings, rowels and shank tops are also
engraved. Antique browning is the finish on the exposed steel. Material costs alone in making these spurs exceeds
$2,200. Estimated retail value of this “boot jewelry” is $4,000.
A purchased ticket has a one in 200 chance of winning. Only 200 tickets are being sold.
View the spurs or purchase tickets on Facebook and make Pay Pal payments to [email protected] or see web-
site link kmmrs.com
Tickets may also be purchased by calling the King’s Manor office at 364-0661.
This Pentecost Sunday Weekend let us search for comfort. The Sequence from the Pentecost Liturgy is one of my
favorite hymns in the Church’s treasury. Called the Golden Sequence, it is one of only four sequences to survive the
Council of Trent’s liturgical reforms of 1570. It is a litany of images of comfort and consolation. I do not doubt that
the Holy Spirit breaks into the world and brings inspiration of new life and new graces and new spiritual gifts. But
all the ancient hymns and poems about the Paraclete’s speak of the Holy Spirt as the great source of comfort and
consolation.
This makes sense doesn’t it? If you know that you have an advocate that is always on your side, always pulling for
you, always helping you shine your best, and always calling you to the front, it is easy to find comfort. When we
know that there is someone on our side, no matter the situation consolation is just a breath away. The advocacy of
the Holy Spirit is different than other types. When we call the Holy Spirit into our lives, He comes and calls our best
self forward. The Spirit’s comfort and consolation calls us to return to the grace of our Baptism, to our most per-
fected self. It doesn’t always feel full of consolation at the moment, but when rescued from our more base selves,
we find our wounds healed, our strength renewed.
THANK YOU, each one in St. Anthony’s
wonderful community of Faith, for your
outpouring of love for Irene and family -
shown through Memorial gifts to favorite
charities and causes, for beautiful floral
bouquets (she loved flowers) for the loving sympathy
cards and messages of support; for your texts, calls, for
stopping by for a front yard visit. Deepest gratitude for
the meals, desserts and sides of food brought over, for
your kind offers to meet other bereavement needs in the
passing of our dear Mother, Mother-in-law, Grand-
mother. For your faithful prayers, for happy stories
shared about our fun, talented, giving and community-
serving Mother. Irene loved God, and was always grate-
ful for her church friends! We love and appreciate you!

Thought for Reflection:
“Unless the eye catch fire, God will not be seen. Unless the ear catch fire, God will not be heard. Unless the tongue
catch fire, God will not be named. Unless the heart catch fire, God will not be loved. Unless the mind catch fire, God
will not be known.” —William Blake
