Sadiq Khan, London’s first Muslim mayor When Khan voiced concerns over 2014 Kashmir floodsCalled deluge in Himalayan region a ‘very grave humanitarian crisis’
MUDASIR YAQOOB
Srinagar, May 7: London’s first Muslim Mayor, Sadiq Khan—who originally hails from Pakistan—was at the forefront of voicing concern over the devastating floods in Kashmir in 2014.
The Labour Party’s Khan—son of a Pakistani bus driver—won 57 percent of votes to become London’s third Mayor, drawing media attention from across the world with specific focus on his religion than the position.
When the floods hit Kashmir in September 2014, Khan—the Member Parliament from Tooting con-stituency in South London—wrote two letters to UK’s Department for International Development (DfID) and Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) about the devastating deluge, calling it a “very grave humanitarian crisis.”
London, May 7: Choos-ing 'hope over fear', Londoners elected their first Muslim mayor on Thursday as Labour's Sadiq Khan comfortably romped home despite a xenophobic and Islam-ophobic campaign run by his Conservative opponent that even invoked Prime Min-ister Narendra Modi's name to garner Hindu votes.
The 45-year-old Pakistani-origin Khan won 57 percent of the vote to easily beat Zac Gold-smith (43 percent). His tally of 1,310,143 votes gives him the largest personal mandate of any politician in British his-tory, The Guardian reported.
Seeking to put behind him a campaign that saw his rivals portraying him as an "extremist" and distribut-ing pamphlets aimed at Hindus, Sikhs and Sri Lankans, Khan said that his victory showed that

Say move aimed to change Kashmir’s demography
MUDDASIR ALI
Srinagar, May 7: Kashmir Center for Social and Developmental Studies (KCSDS) and High Court Bar Association (HCBA) on Saturday warned the State Government against setting up separate (Sainik) colony for retired army men in the Valley and settling homeless non-state sub-jects in J&K, saying the move was aimed at “changing the demography” of Muslim majority State.
The two bodies termed the proposal for bringing J&K under National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) as “direct attack” on special status of J&K, asking people to “stand against ill designs of New Delhi.”
