Recently, for instance, Dr Bob Ward introduced those who engaged in the
off-season program at the Cowboys training-facility to many styles of
Martial Arts Eastern Training.

Ward developed a programs and activities which he felt certain would
improve his student's football skills. I'm a Physical Educator by profession
and academic training, he says, "so consequently, and hopefully, I have a
good understanding of how a Football Player must be able to move to be
effective. I saw that the Martial Arts provided a way I could explain the
various dimension of body movement and their importance to each player
for his specific position.
MULTI-FACETED ART
"The Martial Arts content is "Multi-Faceted" and is an excellent Resource to draw ion for training All Elements of the Body.
Moving to your Left, moving to your Right,
The use of the Hands in football can be accentuated through the Martial Arts.
I think one would have to be blind not to see that."
EARLY (1976 TO-DATE)
It is only plagiarism when one takes the credit for something they didn't do...
Is there anything new under the Sun?
It is a pleasure for me to "set one facet of the record straight" by providing
The history of Martial Arts in the NFL (Dallas Cowboys) from 1976 to date.
There was a cadre of brilliant and dedicated Martial Artists that helped me
Implement their skills into a Football Context, and helped me pass this
Knowledge of human movement from the Martial Arts to a Super Bowl
Championship Team, while I was with Dallas, and, later, to other NFL Teams,
and Universities, and Colleges to improve their teams. In fact Valentine
Espiricueta is still very active with a first class group of defensive Players for
the Dallas Cowboy.
When Coach Landry hired me, I brought my Experience to the Cowboys in
1976 as a:
Football Coach
Track Coach
Martial Artist
Fencing Instructor
Sports Scientist, .
Incidentally, all the Contributing individuals came from my instructor, and
friend, Dan Inosanto except for one, Dr. Rod Sacharnoski (Juko Kai)
These Martial Artists provided the Knowledge for the development of a..
NEW SCIENTIFIC LIBRARY OF SPORTS/FOOTBALL
SKILLS
Today, many very successful coaches don't have a clue about the underlying
reasons why The Sports Martial Arts Program is a absolute essential part of their
Football Program. However, all it takes is a little study to show how this Body
Movement Knowledge is applicable to all positions, and for all players. Each position
or sport can draw upon this Library of Human Software Development to accomplish
their appointed assignments on the field more effectively and efficiently.
In fact, this body of knowledge is adding to the list of Basic Motor Skills that are
already taught in schools around the world .

HIGH TECH - SCIENCE TAKES THE FIELD
"In a time when high-tech has become a way of life, when biomechanics and
Computerized On-Field Analysis (OFAS a Computer Graphics program that tracked
each player during NFL Games) and tests to judge strength, fatigue, speed, and
durability have become commonplace in the athletic arena, the Dallas Cowboys have
worked to stay one step ahead in the area of conditioning their players in all
resources used in football."

Player Reactions - Not Without Questions?
While some of his suggestions occasionally draw smiles and/or rolled eyes from the players he supervises, they test his methods nonetheless. When he brought a couple of Aerobic Dance Instructors to the practice field to put them through some dance routines, everyone fell into place. These young female instructors pushed most of the players to very high fitness levels
When, recently, he invited an expert in Wholistic Science and the Chinese Martial Arts to training camp to demonstrate something called Dragon Dancing, several players were interested to learn what he had to say. The visiting instructor described now the movements of Dragon Dancing could be used to stretch muscles of the body, strengthen and tone, and even improve cardiovascular fitness, and Ward busily took notes.
Alternate Plan from a Stanford graduate: Pat Donovan (Offensive Tackle), said, "if I
wanted to relax, I'd just open a can of beer, and recline on my couch, and watch TV.
Eternal Vigilance Which is to say Ward, and the Cowboys are ever on the outlook for
new ways to improve the Minds and Bodies of players. And while they don't always
understand them, they give it a try Reality Check
It was Jackie Smith, the former St. Cardinals tight end who joined the Cowboys for
one final NFL season in 1978, who came up with one of the most interesting
responses to Ward's myriad of tests. Having put the new Cowboy through a battery
of test that determined everything from Explosiveness to Body Fat, Ward
presented Smith with a bound computer printout filled with charts and numbers.
Smith looked it over, then turned his attention to Ward who stood, awaiting some
reaction. Jackie shook his head. "Bob", "he said, " I can't read any of this. Can't you
just tell me whether I'm alive or dead and let it go at that."

Sensory Deprivation Tank
Hutchison Michael, The Book of Flotation, William and Morrow, Inc, 1984.
Stern Gary, Physiological and mood Effects of Salt Water Flotation Periods,
Float To Relax, Inc. Denver, Colorado, 1980. Then, a few seasons back, there was the "Sensory Deprivation Tank", something that looked as if it has been borrowed from a science fiction movie. In it a player would float on his back, buoyed up in salt water that kept at a normal external skin temperature of 93.5 degrees. What he was there to achieve was the "Alpha State, in which the Brain Waves slowed from 13 to 30 Hz (Beta) to 7 to 12 cycles per second (Alpha). Research, Ward explains, has shown that when one's Body and Mind are in such a receptive state, the learning process could be multiplied ten-fold." By relaxing, he said, "a player can absorb more information-Learn the game plan more
quickly, things like that."
The tank was, also, fitted with a TV for viewing Plays and Skills, and wired for
sound.
