B.Sc. Interaction Programme
Light Up your Life. This initiative by the SPIE Manipal university Student chapter, with
strong support of Prof. Santhosh C.- Head of department and Mr. Ajeetkumar Patil-
Advisor to SPIE chapter was aimed to enhance Optics and Photonics awareness of
students pursuing Bachelors. The audience comprised students mostly from several
local colleges from Udupi, Ajarkkad, Kallianpur, Mangalore.
Launched on 16th November 2013, the event was inaugurated by Prof. N.Udupa,
Research Directorate-Health Sciences (speaker in top left photo).
The main session began at 11 a.m. with the Introduction to Optics and Photonics.
With an aim to maximise student interaction with us, this talk was split among four
speakers- Ms. Vanessa Rodrigues (below rightmost), Ms. Swathi Rao K. (top left), Mr.
Samvit Menon (top right), and Ms. Madhura Somayaji (bottom left). This was followed
by an Introduction to Research and the SPIE Manipal University Student Chapter by
the Chapter President Mr. Uday Gowda (top middle).
The Afternoon sessions comprised Research Lab visits where the students were
exposed to fields of Linear and non-linear optics, spectroscopy and nanoscience. They
were also exposed to the on-going research and a range of events organised by the
department to maximize student exposure to keep pace with research in and around
the country simultaneously.

Optics Outreach to Grade 12 students
As part of our optics awareness outreach programs, Grade 12 students of a nearby
school Madhavakripa English Higher primary School visited the Department of Atomic
and Molecular Physics as part of an institution visit on 30th November 2013. This
visit would also serve as projects as part of their academic curriculum.
Organised by two of our faculties Ms. Surya Harikrishnan and Mr. K.S. Choudhari and
coordinated with the SPIE MU Student chapter, the students were introduced to basic
optics experiments based on reflection and polarisation, refraction through different
media, diffraction through assorted apertures and obstacles and optical waveguides,
including hands-on experience on these topics. Demonstrations on Interference and
Interferometers, zeeman and faraday effect, and optical fiber communications were
also presented. SPIE student members Surekha Barkur, Swathi Rao K., Praveen
Devangad and Vanessa Rodrigues were involved in giving demonstrations and
assistance in the workshop session. Each Student was provided with customized
Chapter promotional materials.
Poster Presentation
At the two day National Seminar on Frontiers in Photonics organised by Department of
Physics, Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College, Udupi, SPIE Manipal University student
chapter organised a Poster presentation on Optics+Photonics for B.Sc. students.
10 June 2014
Led by SPIE student members Surekha Barkur and Harshitha, the event was carried
out successfully in the afternoon session of 13th December 2013. With several
colorful posters to decide from, the judges had a tough time picking out the best of
the best. Prizes to the winners (1st, 2nd, 3rd) were given during the Valedictory
function on 14th Dec 2013.
Science Quiz Competition
Aimed at B.Sc. students once more, the science Quiz competition called
the exQuizits was hosted by SPIE Manipal University Student chapter on 14th
December 2013 at the National Seminar on Frontiers in Photonics. The seminar is
organised by the Department of Physics, MGM College, Udupi.
This event was led by SPIE Student members Vanessa Rodrigues (Logistics and
Prelims), Swathi Rao K (Quizmaster) and Arun T.V. (scores). Participants arrived for
the event from Karnataka and Goa. With teams named after elementary particles –
Fermion, Hadron, Lepton, Boson and Baryon, 5 finalists were chosen after a
preliminary elimination round. With rounds of general knowledge on science with an
orientation toward optics+photonics, and a great competitive spirit and laughter in the
air the event moved on through 9 twisted rounds of Q & A.
10 June 2014
Each team comprised two members. The winning team were from Poornaprajna
college, Udupi; First runners up were from MGM College, Udupi; Second runners up
were from University college, Mangalore.
