2013
Port Coquitlam certainly has a lot to be proud of in 2013! is year, we mark our City’s 100th birthday and celebrate 90 years of history and tradition with our May Day Festival.
Our May Day festivities began in 1923 to celebrate the beginning of Spring, with children gathering at Aggie Park to rejoice and skip around maypoles to perform a wonderful ribbon dance.
Ninety years later, the enthusi-asm is just as exciting as we enjoy an entire week of family-focused activities! e fun begins with the Opening Ceremonies at 7:30 pm on Friday, May 3rd in the Port Co-quitlam Recreation Complex. e Port Coquitlam Rotary May Day Parade will bring our community together on Saturday, May 11th and this year, to commemorate our 100 year milestone, City Council will be re-enacting the tree planting ceremony that took place at Aggie Park in 1913. Further details about this year’s May
Day festivities are available on the City’s website at www.portcoquitlam.ca/mayday.
We have certainly come a long way over the past century, while continuing to appre-ciate and honour our long-stand-ing traditions and values. Our small town charm and PoCo Pride has served us well and people are noticing! What better way to cele-brate a 100 birthday than to be rec-ognized as one of the most livable cities in BC and Canada. We truly are a best-kept secret, where people can still a ord to buy a home or set up a business. Best of all, we still have that old-fashioned commu-nity spirit that you don’t o en nd in urban areas; that speaks to you, our community, and you should be very proud of this accolade!
Our City’s May Day Task Force has worked extremely hard with the parks and recreation sta to make this year’s 90th May Day Festival one that you will all enjoy!! On behalf of
Port Coquitlam City Council, we invite you to come out and celebrate our City’s rich history on its 100th birthday!!Yours in PoCo Pride,
Greg Moore, Mayor

is March, Port Coquitlam turned 100 years old. Being one hundred years old is a reason to celebrate and it is with great pleasure that I would like to take this opportunity to tell you a little about our May Day week and invite you to celebrate this special year with us.
Port Coquitlam has been buzzing since January with Birthday activities and we have more to share with you during May Days. During the Opening Ceremonies on May 3rd we will be revisiting 1923, our rst May Day in Port Coquitlam. Our royal party will be dancing to the beat of those bygone days with the youthful zest they always provide. ere will be live entertain-ment and we have invited all of our former May Queens to come out and join us. With loads of fun, this always is an awesome event.
e Port Coquitlam Heritage Society will be holding their annual dance on May 5th at Wilson Center. If you have not been out to a community dance this one is always lots of fun.
Our annual Rotary May Day parade is on Saturday
May 11th. Following the parade, our city will be alive with opportunities for free fun and entertainment. ere is a historical re-enactment of the o cial tree planting cere-
mony that took place at Aggie Park 100 years ago, a block party in Leigh Square with live music, games, a mar-ket place and carnival, a block party at Station Square with train rides, and free Trolley rides leaving from the Port Coquitlam Heritage site to take you around the city. Each of these venues will be o ering free fun events for all.
One of my favourite days is Moth-er’s Day in the Park. is year it will take on a new air with tents and activities at Aggie Park. is is a new location for us. ere will be magic and story telling, a pet show, a special planter box to make for mom, and family portraits. Come and bring a picnic lunch or, for a very small price,
you can purchase a meal from the Kinsmen. ere is al-ways lots of free activities and entertainment for the whole family.
As you can see, May Day is a very exciting time for Port
Coquitlam and this year will be even bigger as we celebrate our Centennial . If you are new to the city I invite you to come and experience May Day with us. It’s our birthday and we will be celebrating. I hope that you will join us.
You can always nd out more about this week by check-ing out our web site at www.portcoquitlam.ca/mayday.Bev Moulds, May Day Task Force Chair

is year being Port Coquitlam’s Hun-dredth Birthday, we will be commem-orating the event with a full costume promenade from Leigh Square to Aggie Park for a ceremonial tree planting and re-enactment of some of the city’s nest moments in history. e partic-ipants for this event include our City Councillors, who will be helped along by talented actors from Second Storey Improv eatre. I have had several opportunities to attend some of Second
Storey’s productions and I am sure they will have all the facts down correct-ly…. well… maybe close to the facts… okay maybe just loosely based on the facts. Any way you look at it this will be a fun way to spend your a ernoon a er the parade. Remember, we will be meeting in front of City Hall at approx-imatley12:00 and rest assured I have it on somewhat sketchy authority that Second Storey would not even consider poking fun at our city.
