SPECIAL CONGREGATIONAL MEETING
A MESSAGE FROM RABBI SHELDON ZIMMERMAN / BOOK RETURNS
Many of you have heard me speak and teach on the Torah commandment “to love the stranger” which is one of the foremost in our Jewish tradition and is stated far more often than “you shall love your neighbor”.
But lately when some of you asked me about what Judaism and Torah have to teach us about the issues of immigrants and immigration, sanctuary cities, and the place of the stranger, I realized that some of you may not have heard me and it would be wrong of me not to call your attention to what is a basic Torah- true value.
Our Torah and rabbinic texts remind us again and again that so many of our ancestors were strangers in the lands to which they came. Abraham and Sarah traveled to
Canaan, Rebecca came to marry Isaac in a foreign (to her) land. Jacob brought Rachel and Leah to a new and yet strange land. The story of Ruth and Naomi stand before us always. Ruth’s pledge to her mother are words recited by so many who join our Jewish people, "Wither thou goest, I will go, wither thou lodgest I will lodge, thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God. May God do so to me and thee if ought but death part thee and me.” It is a mitzvah to welcome the stranger. It is a mitzvah to permit others to live among us in peace and security. Remember, the Torah teaches, that you shall love the stranger for you were strangers in the land of Egypt, and you know the pain and difficulties faced by strangers in new, different and strange lands.
We need a policy on immigration which is loyal to Jewish values and American values. The Torah begins with the universal story of Adam and Eve. They were created in God’s image and yet they weren’t Jewish. They are the parents of humankind, we are all one family the Torah teaches us. The first covenant (brit) in Torah is made with Noah and Noah’s family, and they weren’t Jewish because there were no Jews yet. They are a second Adam and Eve, the parents of all of us. We are their descendants and we are all one family, each one of us created in the divine image.
This not a mere matter of politics. This is a matter of human values that are anchored in the Jewish soul and which we helped bring to the world. Stand firm on this value, be resolute, be a committed Jew to the common bond of all humanity.
Remember it is our Torah which teaches this lesson to all humanity, love the stranger, for you were strangers, and you know their pain, their suffering, their vulnerabilities, and their hearts and souls. Be GOOD Jews and loyal to these eternal values of Torah.Hinei ma tov!

Mah Gadlu Ma’asecha Yah. How beautiful are your works Adonai.
As I sat at my kitchen table, FaceTiming with Bar and Bat Mitzvah students on a snowy day last month; I watched the birds at my feeder. These small creatures, with their chest’s puffed out, were trying to protect themselves from the storm. Watching them was a magnificent testament to what God has created. All I kept singing in my head was the Sheffa Gold chant Ma Gadlu. It made me think that we often don’t look at the small beauty that is all around us, but we are quick to see the negative and the darkness.
At any given time, our congregation has a number of people who are not well. Illnesses that range from a broken bone, to serious cancers are forever lurking around. Our goal here is to be available to each and every one, supporting them through their illness, and we pray that we are able to see them return back to full health again.
Sickness is such a personal and frightening moment in our lives. It calls us to find a strength that we don’t know we have. It calls on us often to rely on the strength of others, and allow ourselves to be vulnerable. When we are overcome by illness or pain, finding your sense of humor is important. Not stand-up comedy sense of humor, but rather the small funny things that happen day in and day out, even when we are sick. Finding the beauty in each day is also important, and finding our inner calm that allows our bodies to heal is of equal importance.
Some who are sick choose to go through their journey alone, and we respect their desire for confidentiality. Often, I am approached by a well meaning congregant who asks me where someone is. Understand that if I have permission to share information with you, I will. The more people who can support someone looking for that support, the better it is for that person. However, there are times when we are asked to keep a confidence, and I would never break such a vow. My belief is that confidentiality “trumps” everything else.
Rabbi Evan Moffic once wrote an article about Robin Williams for an online belief website. He quoted Ralph Waldo Emerson saying of Williams:
“He (Williams) fulfilled the definition of a successful life” captured so brilliantly by Ralph Waldo Emerson:
To laugh often and much; To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.
We all experience difficult times in life. May we all remember during those times that to succeed in life is to touch someone. Each of us is a child of God, and it is a belief in God that helps us during very difficult times. However, a sense of humor can’t hurt either.
B’shira,
Cantor/R abbi Debra Stein

A MESSAGE FROM EDINA SEGAL, DIRECTOR OF JEWISH EDUCATION & FAMILY ENGAGEMENT
"Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of life's longing for itself. They come through you but not from you, and though they are with you yet they belong not to you. You may give them your love but not your thoughts, for they have their own thoughts. You may house their bodies but not their souls, for their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams. You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you. For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.
You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth. The archer sees the mark up on the path of the infinite, and she bends you with her might that her arrows may go swift and far. Let your bending in the archers hand be for
gladness; for even as she loves the arrow that flies, so she loves also the bow that is stable." —Kahlil Gibran "The Prophet"
Easier said than done. But that is our work as parents, to raise independent children that will have the confidence to navigate life on their own. I will be trying to internalize the sentiments of this beautiful poem from The Prophet as my firstborn, my only daughter Michal, moves to a new continent. Despite her telling me that it's almost as if she was moving to California in distance, it still seems very far to me over there in the country of the happiest people, Denmark. When my children were young, we traveled overseas often. I wanted them to feel as though they were citizens of the world, comfortable amongst diverse people and cultures. Be careful what you wish for! I send her off with all the happiness and love in this new chapter of her life. And luckily Purim, the holiday of fun, redemption and celebration, is right around the corner to cheer me up!
We will have an intergenerational Purim experience on March 12 with a partial reading of the Megillah, a lesson on hamantaschen baking by the talented Charlotte Sasso and a magic show from a second-generation professional magician Stephen Ringel! Costumes encouraged!Upcoming events in March:

It represents the conversations of the generations of the early teachers of our tradition and teaches us so much of what the rabbis taught and thought. Although we have been studying for some time now, all are invited to join the ongoing conversation – no prerequisite is required. We are studying the Tractate B’rachot of the Babylonian Talmud.

Monday, March 13 at 11:00am–12:00pmThe Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenmentby Eckhart Tolle
The Power of Now takes readers on an inspiring spiritual journey to find their true and deepest self and reach the ultimate in personal growth and spirituality: the discovery of truth and light. From the very first page of Eckhart Tolle's extraordinary book, we move rapidly into a significantly higher altitude where we breathe a lighter air. We become connected to the indestructible essence of our Being, “The eternal, ever present One Life beyond the myriad forms of life that are subject to birth and death.” Eckhart Tolle uses simple language and an easy question and answer format to guide us. A word of mouth phenomenon since its first publication, The Power of Now is one of those rare books with the power to create an experience in readers, one that can radically change their lives for the better.

WAYS TO SUPPORT OUR COMMUNITY
When those whom we hold close to us die, we yearn to find a way to consecrate and honor their memory. As we sit in our beautiful landmark sanctuary, we are warmed by its loveliness, soulfulness and openness to the world of the spirit and the physical world around us. We feel ever closer to God.
You can enshrine the memory of your loved ones by inscribing their name(s) on a pew plaque in the sanctuary. In that sacred space you will connect to the bonds between them and the divine.
A Pew Plaque in our Main Sanctuary may be purchased for $5,000.
Membership helps support the wide range of programs and activities offered at the Jewish Center of the Hamptons. Your dues also help maintain the beauty of our sanctuary and the upkeep of our buildings and grounds. We encourage everyone to take full advantage of the wide array of religious, intellectual, cultural and social events at the JCOH.
Take this opportunity to dedicate a prayer book in honor of a loved one, to celebrate a special occasion, or in memory of a loved one.
Celebrate a Simcha or special occasion by sponsoring the Kiddush following Shabbat services on Saturday morning. Please note that 3% of all donations are given to MAZON – A Jewish Response to Hunger.
