From Pastor Dave
Did you know that Calvary Lutheran is part of a greater community here
in Grants Pass called “Church of the Valley”. The “Church of the Valley” (COV)
includes every Christian church here in the valley and it is probably the strongest
single community of people here in Grants Pass. The reason it was formed was
because we Christians believe there is only one Church of Jesus Christ in this
community – a Church made up of believers in our Lord Jesus Christ – gathered
in many congregations. The Church of the Valley is a gathering of pastors and
congregations committed to living as one Church with the goal of bringing about
Christ-empowered transformation to our community. One of the things we do
together as the COV is “Serve GP”. Hopefully, you remember me talking about
this over the past six years. “Serve GP” is a visible way for us to display and de-
clare Christ to our community. Our goal is that through our annual “Serve GP”
service day, the Grants Pass community will see what Christians can do together
and it becomes a witness both to the community and to those who serve. When
as many as 1500 people from different churches join together to serve the com-
munity where we live, God will be glorified!
Serve GP, this year, is Saturday, June 25. I want to encourage all of you
to consider serving on that day. Check out the website: servegp.org and sign up
to serve. You can either sign up online or request a sign up form to fill out and I’ll
sign you up. I’m hoping to identify a couple projects where we at Calvary can
sign up for to work together. Listen up for more information and please plan to
participate!
In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see
your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. – Matthew 5:16

Financial Report Summarizing the first four months of 2016, our offering is just slightly lower than budgeted. Hopefully, with summer vacations, offering will continue to be received as planned. Expenses are slightly higher than budgeted. In March the parking lot had a small area dug up to fix the drainage issue that was causing the small lake near the Fellowship Hall. In addition, we just recently had to have the well pump replaced. Even though there hasn’t been a major campaign for additional funds, there are still open funds that members have been giving to and any member can continue to donate to. They are: Major Improvements (reserve for any ma-jor problem), Sound System (for future expansion of screens and projec-tors), Family Ministries (spent at the discretion of Director of this ministry), and the Endowment Fund. Do you purchase items from Amazon.com.? You can sign up at “smile.amazon.com” and designate Calvary Lutheran Church of Grants Pass and when you purchase selected items, Amazon will send Calvary a check equal to 0.5% of the purchase price. For all the Thrivent members who donate their “Choice” dollars to Calvary, remember that you must re-designate those funds at least once a year. Thank you to all who participate. Tired of writing checks each week, remember that you can have your offer-ing directly deposited to Calvary through the Simply Giving program (Vanco). You can have the funds automatically withdrawn from your check-ing or savings account or use your credit card (great way to earn extra points or travel mileage). Want to sign up? Contact the church office or Gary L. Blom, the church treasurer.

Listen to Pastor Dave Online
Did you know that you can listen to the past week's
sermon on line at Calvary's website: calvarylutherangp.org?
The church website also has a copy of the latest newsletter,
The Calvary Caller.
Thanks Be To God . . .
We recognize that many people work “behind the scenes” here at
Calvary and we want to acknowledge their efforts. Please let us know
of individuals we can thank in our newsletters. This month we want to
mention the following:
◊ Our dedicated Sunday School teachers including Denise Angstadt, Pat Brown, Terry Galarneaux, Kelly Tommerup, Lisa Jaroslow, Deb Christopherson, Rick Kelly (when he was still here) and Sunday School helper, Brandon Jaroslow
What Is the Side By Side Ministry?
Side by Side Ministry is a group of Calvary members who visit shut-ins, someone who has had surgery or is in a nursing home.
Pastor Dave is the ministry leader and selects the people to be visited. Also, any Calvary member can ask to have someone visit a family member or friend.
This ministry is in need of volunteers to visit our Calvary family mem-bers. There is no special training required, just a desire to visit. Side By Side has a monthly meeting, the third Tuesday of the month at 1:00 pm. How often you visit is according to your schedule and what you are able to do.
If you have any questions, you can talk to me , Joe Zimmer or Pastor Dave.

Notes from the Church Council
The congregation raised $1,200 to purchase a new basketball hoop
for the church. Karl Dinkle informed Council that he discovered the price
had increased by $300 including shipping. Council approved contributing
the shortfall from the Council line item in the budget. Family Ministry
will be responsible for any cost of installation.
Council reviewed the Outreach Committee’s recommendations for
local benevolences for the year and approved its recommendation. Organ-
izations that will be supported are ROC, Gospel Rescue Mission, Chris-
tian Service Network, Pregnancy Care Center, and Joe’s Place. St. Vin-
cent DePaul will be considered for special holiday offerings.
The following terms will expire this year: Vice President, Secretary,
Property, Stewardship, and Outreach. Please prayerfully consider being
available to fill one of these positions.
Relay For Life is June 18
A big thank you to all the people who donated and helped with the Rum-
mage Sale. We made $1084.60 over the two days and all money will go to
the American Cancer Society. Thank you to all the cookie bakers, cookie pur-
chasers, luminaria purchasers, and donators. We are halfway to our fundrais-
ing goal of $5000.00.
The next Relay for Life Calvary Lutheran team meeting will be on Sun-
day, June 5th, after the first service to talk about set up for the Relay for Life
event on June 18th. We have 13 people on our team this year to walk laps for
the Relay for Life event. Everyone in the congregation is invited to attend the
Relay for Life event on June 18th starting at 10:00 a.m. for the Survivor Walk
and/or walk a lap with the team. Relay continues all day and night until Sun-
day morning. There is a beautiful luminaria ceremony at dark to remember
loved ones who died of cancer and to celebrate our loved ones who have sur-
vived. To those who have purchased luminaria, please decorate your bags in
memory or to honor your loved one and return to the church office by Sunday,
June 5th, with a can of food to hold the bag in place. All cans of food will be
donated to the ROC this year after the Relay for Life event. Thank you all for
your support!

Christmas Bazaar! Are You Kidding?Christmas Bazaar! Are You Kidding?Christmas Bazaar! Are You Kidding?Christmas Bazaar! Are You Kidding?
Actually, No. This is the time to begin thinking of items to donate
to our annual Christmas Bazaar. Are you changing the look of your
home from Winter to Spring/Summer, we can use any item you may be
tired of that would be a good seller. Suggested items are: dishes/side
dishes, dessert serving dishes, pillows, napkins/tablecloths, knick-
knacks, candles, etc. Anything that can be sold and given as a gift.
Cranky spouses?
Jams, jellies dilly beans chutneys or anything you preserve make
good items to sell, so set some aside for the Bazaar. Also, flavored vin-
egars and oils.
Our jewelry inventory is very low. So pieces you don’t want any
more or even broken pieces, bring them in and give to Lynn Tosh, Jan
Stutts or Sandy in the church office. Jewelry boxes sell well also.
Since storage space at the church is very limited, we ask that you
box your items and store them at your home. When pricing begins
sometime in November, you will be notified via the church bulletin
when to bring your items to the church.
Needless to say, you have our gratitude for your continuing
support, donations and prayers.

In Memory of Karen Haggard
Former Calvary member, Karen Haggard, passed away on May 5 in Corvallis, Oregon. Her family would like her friends to know, if they would like to contrib-ute in her memory, there are a couple of causes that she felt strongly about. They are Luther House, 211 NW 23rd Street, Corvallis, OR 97330 and Samar-itan Village Bus Fund, 285 NW 35th Street, Corvallis, OR 97330.
Karen volunteered with the bus committee in her retirement village to help en-sure both a means of regular transportation, and to provide meaningful social opportunities for her community. Many of her belongings were also donated to this cause.
She was also very spiritual and took great joy in the mission of the Luther House campus ministry in Corvallis.
From her daughters, Stephanie Rouse and Angela Taylor, thank you for all the stories and well wishes that you've been sharing with us.

“Last Thursday Serve @ The ROC”
The last Thursday of each month has been designated as a time when we
can represent Calvary Lutheran as volunteers at The ROC Food Pantry. See
you on June 30. Come between 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. for just an hour or
stay longer. For further information, please call Lisa Jaroslow at 541-295-4663
or Ruth Johnsen at 541-476-3344. See you at The ROC!
Two More Ways to Help The ROC Food Pantry
Here are two more ways that you can help the mission of the ROC
(Reaching Our Community) Food Pantry:
Amazon Smiles is a program for donations from Amazon purchas-
es to non-profit agencies. If you shop through Amazon, you can do-
nate a small percentage from what you buy through this program to
the ROC. Go to smile.amazon.com to register. Not all purchases from
Amazon qualify, but millions do.
Also, if you travel and start to accumulate small toiletry items
(shampoo, conditioner, soap, and others) and they are just taking up
space in your bathroom or linen closet, consider donating these to the
ROC. These items are given out to clients who often cannot afford
these as they are not a part of the food stamp program. So, if you are
cleaning out these items and want to know where to donate them, re-
member the ROC. As usual, all items may be dropped off at the
church in the ROC cart. Thank you so much.

GAMES! BIBLE STORIES! MUSIC! CRAFTS!
Cave Quest is coming and that brings fun and games mingled with
Bible stories and music. There is so much fun to be had – deco-
rang, cra.s, games, Bible stories, food, and music – something for
everyone.
Decorang help needed: Have you always wanted to be part of
creang a fun environment, now is your chance!.
A list of needed items can be found on a clipboard
on the Narthex table. If you can help supply any of
these, it will be appreciated. Thank you.
Let us know if you would like to be part of this wonderful ministry – what
a great way to have fun while you get in your “second hour”!
Contact Debbie Christopherson, Lisa Jaroslow, Diane Weaver,
or let Sandy know if you have any quesons.

Gordon Hoefer’s Honor Flight Adventure
At the last New Member Potluck, our speaker was from the Oregon
Honor Flight program. After her talk I decided to put my name on the list.
When I got a call asking if I would like to go on the Honor Flight in less
than two weeks I said "Yes" without any hesitation. We left Portland on an
early flight to National Airport in DC, arriving in late afternoon. We had din-
ner at the hotel and then were given information about the next days
events, and also watched a video about the trials, tribulations and suc-
cesses that resulted in the WWII Memorial.
Saturday morning we left in our bus with a police escort and went to
the Memorial. We were to be there 1.5 hours and we started out with a
group picture and then wandered around looking at the marvelous details
of the Memorial. While walking around I was greeted and thanked by
many of the public, including a 3 Star General of the Air Force and a
Coast Guard Captain. We spent the rest of the day viewing other memori-
als such as: Korean War, Viet Nam, Air Force, WWI, and the Navy Muse-
um.
A very tired group of Veterans, including a WAAC vet, and our
Guardians (many were also Vets) had dinner at a typical southeastern
buffet then returned to the hotel .
Sunday, after a leisurely breakfast, it was back in the bus and out to the
Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Virginia. It was a nostalgic trip for
some who been in the Air Corp or who had flown in one of the many types
of planes on exhibit. After a lunch we boarded the bus and went to Arling-
ton Cemetery where we watched the changing of the guard at the Tomb
of the Unknown Soldier then toured the grounds. Our last stop was the
Women in Military Museum. Back at the National Airport we did the TSA
thing then waited in a very crowded area for our delayed flight home to
Portland. On board the plane we were treated to free meals, courtesy of
Alaskan Air Lines as we had on our flight east. Deplaning in Portland we
were greeted by an honor guard of the local law enforcement and several
groups of patriotic organizations (bagpiper for one) and escorted to our
bus to return to our hotel for the night.
It was an awesome experience and a very humbling one for me. I
appreciated every minute of it and will be ever thankful for the excellent
planning by Gail Yakopatz and her helpers in the Oregon Honor Flight
Committee.
Gordon Hoefer
