From the East
As our Brethren in 1920's started supporting California's public schools, once again South West Lodge No. 283 continues the tradition by supporting National City Public Schools Outstanding Citizenship Award Program. This year’s ceremony was held last April 21, 2017 with tremendous success. Worshipful brother Larry De Vera observed that this was the first time all ten principals of National City Elementary Schools. Altogether we entertained about 250 guests. The
event was another great successful achievement for our Lodge.
It is the time of the year to consider submitting your recommendee for consideration of Hiram Award as well as Mason of the Year Awardee. Brother Senior Warden, Raymund Madriaga, is our Committee Chairman. For the purpose of timely planning, the last date of submission is no later than June 29, 2017, particularly for Mason of the Year Award recipient. The "Hiram Award Program" is the official recognition of a Brother by his own Lodge for his devoted service to that Lodge and to Masonic principles in general. It is intended for the Brother who, year after year, displays his devotion without receiving special recognition or special honor. Every Lodge has many such members. They are the living cement that binds our Fraternity into a true Brotherhood. You will find them at labor in kitchens, the coaching rooms, the committees, their churches and communities, and also called as the "unsung hero" such as the volunteer who makes the coffee at each meeting, the ones who set the tables or arranges the furniture and ornaments in the Lodge room, the painter, the handyman, the organist, the program chairman or any Brethren who consistently donate their time and talents to our beloved Fraternity or who have brought credit to the Craft by their community activities.
As for the "Mason of the Year Award", It is intended for the Brother who, for this particular year 2017, displays his devotion without receiving special recognition or special honor. They could be any Brother as described in the Hiram Award Program. This year's Grand Master's reception of Mason of the Year Award recipient will be held on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at 5:30 PM at the San Diego Scottish Rite Center.

From the West
We are now nearly into the second half of the year and time to consider your options and start thinking about qualifying for vacancies in our officers’ line. We need to fill in the senior deacon and junior warden seats. Our line officers and those who preceded us are here willing and able to train, guide, mentor and extend our wholehearted support for you. Availability is understandably a bit of challenge to some due of the myriad of situation: it could be family, work schedule, or some other hindrance. I, myself, as Senior Warden have yet to make preparations to be qualified and elected for the challenges of occupying the seat in the East. I am entertaining the idea of approaching our brethren to be members of one the various committees.
It was such a great joy to see many faces from all walks of life at our recently concluded National City Public Schools Awards Ceremony. Thus as a yearly event, it becomes an honor for our Lodge to have even just a few moment in the recognition of the students in our community schools. It is the Principals, educators and parents who have the greater roles in these students well-being and we are glad to add a little contribution for morale boosters. We hope that our little contribution to our
community schools will impart some positivity and acceptance upon the educational attainments of these children. I had a chance to visit Hornitos Lodge No#98 Free & Accepted Masons. The seven-hour drive was worthwhile to be in
attendance at the raising of brother Franc Ragsac, sibling of our member Bro.Troy Ragsac. Brother Franc has the honor of being the first Filipino to be initiated, passed and raised at Hornitos Lodge; which was chartered in1856. It is an old western town quite so remote that I have wonder that a Masonic Temple exist there. Inside of the Lodge may be very small, compared to ours, yet, as you can imagine, what we have inside our Lodge they have it there too. I got to know a little history about the Lodge. I was amazed and very impressed. Their dedication and love for Masonry is so heroic. Just imagine they have a Past Master who had been a Master of the Lodge for 30-consecutive years; then another Past Master, 20 years as Secretary. The Lodge now has 75-members, most are Past Masters and some are quite older in age but the Lodge members are adding up because we have brethren that their cable tow is longer than their own life. An example my brother worthy of all imitations!!!
.On the Level, Raymund Madriaga, Senior Warden
From the South
I bid everyone greetings from your Junior Warden aboard the mighty USS Theodore
Roosevelt (CVN 71). Although I am out to sea once more, my responsibilities and duties at
Southwest Lodge stay constant in my mind and I frequently inquire about the on-goings, health
and happiness of the brethren there. My wife is my steady reporter and through her I have heard
nothing but positive and productive things coming from our mother lodge this past month. First
and foremost, congratulations to Brother Tyler Garcia for making the arduous journey towards
Passing to the Degree of Fellow Craft, as well Brother Justin "Tiny" Fauver for delivering an
impeccable 3rd degree proficiency of which I had the pleasure to bear witness to. A warm
welcome is extended to our newest Entered Apprentice Mason: Brother Isagani Custodio; I look
forward to meeting with you and extending my cable tow to assist you on your road to becoming a
Master Mason.
We were able to hold yet another successful Breakfast-Lunch Fundraiser at the end of April, as well as provide
refreshments and pay tribute to prestigious educators of National City's public schools and awarding students with an
Outstanding Citizenship Award. For the month of May's Stated Meeting, in honor of Cinco de Mayo, we will be hosting a
Mexican food theme, so please look forward to joining us for the festivities.
As a friendly reminder, we will be holding a POTLUCK for our Stated Meeting in the month of June and are
assigned to bring our BEST dish to share among the brethren and our loved ones. This is an assigned potluck according to the
first letter of your LAST NAME, so please refer to the list below to find out how to help do your part:
A-E: Beef, Chicken or Pork
F-J: Drinks and dessert
K-O: Fruit or Vegetables
P-T: Pancit or Pulutan U-Z: Seafood and/or Cutlery (forks, spoons, plates, napkins)
Should you desire to bring any other dishes that you would like to share with everyone to provide variety and avoid
duplicates, please do not hesitate to do so. Your helping hand and generous contribution are greatly appreciated.

§ Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in service of the United States of America. Over two dozen cities and towns claim to be the birthplace of Memorial Day. While Waterloo N.Y. was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, it’s difficult to prove conclusively the origins of the day.
Regardless of the exact date or location of its origins, one thing is clear – Memorial Day was borne out of the Civil War and a desire to honor our dead. It was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11. “The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land,” he proclaimed. The date of Decoration Day, as he called it, was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle.
On the first Decoration Day, General James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery, and 5,000 participants decorated the graves of the 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers buried there. The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873. By 1890 it was recognized by all of the northern states. The South refused to acknowledge the day, honoring their dead on separate days until after World War I (when the holiday changed from honoring just those who died fighting in the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war).
It is now observed in almost every state on the last Monday in May with Congressional passage of the National Holiday Act of 1971 (P.L. 90 – 363). This helped ensure a three day weekend for Federal holidays, though several southern states have an additional separate day for honoring the Confederate war dead: January 19th in Texas; April 26th in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Mississippi; May 10th in South Carolina; and June 3rd (Jefferson Davis’ birthday) in Louisiana and Tennessee.
