Are Chemicals necessary in foods?
• Chemicals are added mainly as preservatives to prevent bacteria or other microorganisms from spoiling the food.
• Another application is as artificial sweetener, which is added to replace sugar. Artificial sweeteners are mainly used by diabetics wo cannot tolerate high sugar levels in their blood.
• Other requirements for chemicals are as thickening agents, anti-oxidants, acidity regulator, flavor, food coloring etc.
