which we are using technology to create and
interact with media.
What’s it all about?
• Communicating
• Networking
• Creating
• Interacting & Participating
What makes a social media?
Any form of media that anyone can become
involved in.Whether it’s simple
interaction, or complete control, it’s about joining in
and taking part in the process rather than just
being a bystander.
Are there different kinds?
There are all kinds of [platforms for] social
media.
‘Social media’ refers to the way in which we
use them.
WIKIS•Wiki’s are like giant encyclopedias
[online resource] which can contain information about anything.
•The difference is that all the information in them can be entered by, added to or corrected by any one at any time.
•The biggest example of this is ‘wikipedia’
Forums
•Forums are designed as an interactive discussion on any number of topics, whether it’s for help, ideas or just an exchange of ideas.
•It invites anyone to take part, although usually requires an amount of membership
Blogging• Blogging is quite similar to forms, but is far
more in depth. It’s a tool for writing anything the user chooses to make public, whether it’s any creative writing, topical discussion or used as a journal.
• Blogging also invites comments on whatever has been written, and is usually made entirely public, although may require membership to the site.
• The most current and popular example of this is ‘Wordpress’
Micro Blogging
•Micro blogging is very much like blogging, except that you are limited by the amount that you can say.
•This is also usually tied in with social networking, with examples such as ‘Twitter’ and even status updates on ‘Facebook’
Social Networking• Social networking is a new craze which allows
for an entire online community of sharing personal information and alternative communication with any number of people you choose.
• It has allowed for improved relationships with friends or others you would have otherwise not kept in contact with, and even for making new friends.
• The most popular example of this is ‘Facebook’
Content Community
•These are websites dedicated to user created media.
•Most notably are websites where user created videos can be uploaded and shared within an online community, which will also invite feedback and comments.
•The most popular example of this is ‘Youtube’.
So, why all the fuss?
Social media has allowed for everyone to create and share.
It’s allowed for DIY media, and the ability for it to be shared openly within a social community.
Its making media social, and collaborative allowing for more creativity and innovative
ideas with everyones combined talents without having to conform to the industry standards.
So, why all the fuss?
More importantly, it allows for media to be more interactive and personal to everyone.
It has also allowed for different forms of communication to emerge.
Social networking has become the new craze in recent years, allowing for improved
communication with old and new friends.
