Smallpox
Eradication
Amanda Srsic
Smallpox is caused by a DNA virus called Variola
Virus
The virus spreads by replicating in the host’s cytoplasm and
bursting the cell
The virus is transmitted through air, indirect contact,
and direct contact
Smallpox causes characteristic skin lesions that gave the disease its name
Asymptomatic for 12 days, then…
1/3 patients die, and those that
survive can end with scarring or
blindness
Smallpox was a grave disease that infected people in almost all
countries
Inoculation was a successful, ancient technique to prevent
smallpox
Dr. Edward Jenner transformed the
burden of smallpox by developing the first
vaccine in 1796
The smallpox vaccine developed to be grown on cow skin or chicken
eggs and delivered through a bifurcated needle
Kretzschmar M, van den Hof S, Wallinga J, van Wijngaarden J. Ring vaccination and smallpox control. Emerg Infect Dis [serial on the Internet]. 2004 May [date cited]. Available from: http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/10/5/03-0419.htm
The vaccine effectively prevents smallpox transmission
In 1967, the WHO worked toward eradication by mass vaccination
Ring vaccination was a new method that proved very effective
Ring Vaccination decreased smallpox in Africa
India was one of the last frontiers in the eradication campaign
In 1980, smallpox was the first disease eradicated!
The eradication was successful because of the type of disease and public health
methods
