Most of us have been walking for the majority of our lives, but that doesn’t mean we’re good at it. Slips, trips, and falls are a major cause of injuries!
Slips , Trips and Fal ls
According to OSHA, slips, trips and falls cause 15% of all accidental deaths, second only to motor vehicles.
How do so many sl ips , tr ips and fal ls happen? Some injuries occur from falls from heights like a ladder or building. However, most injuries occur while simply walking. HOW?
IRREGULAR SURFACES can make walking difficult. Gravel, uneven sidewalks and rough terrain means people need to literally watch where they’re walking.
STAIRS are another potential challenge. Tall steps, short steps and those with a smaller tread depth can literally trip people up.
Unfortunately getting from point A to point B on your own two feet can’t always be accomplished on perfectly level sidewalks and non-slick surfaces, so what can
you do? Here are some tips to reduce your risk of slipping, tripping or falling.
Just like driving, scan your “road”
for potential hazards and be aware of others.
Slow down when making turns,
coming around corners or when you have limited visibility.
If possible, create a detour
route around slick areas.
When taking the stairs,
always use the handrail.
