A. Product Description
This chapter describes LCD USB PHONE features and application areas.

2. Features
1. The solution can be applied to different products, including USB
headset and USB phone, together with telephony software that can call
traditional landlines (such as Skype or VVCall) or IM (instant messaging)
software (such as QQ, MSN Messenger, or Yahoo Messenger).
2. The product is a single-chip solution. The main chip in the solution is
AppoTech’s SK5001, which is a high-performance, high-reliability
controller.
3. The solution produces high-quality audio output.
4. The solution includes a 128X64 dot-matrix LCD, which enhances the

ease of use with IM software.
3. Platform
The solution can be running on Windows 2000 or Windows XP with IM (instant messaging) software, such as Skype, QQ, MSN Messenger, or Yahoo Messenger). In particular, this solution provides a seamless operation with Skype.
4. Requirement
Here is the minimum PC requirement for the Skype phone solution:
Intel Pentium or compatible PC
64MB memory
100MB of available hard disk space
CD-ROM drive and Internet connection
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000,
or Windows XP
One available USB port
B. Installation
This chapter describes the installation process of AppoMiddleWare and how to connect the LCD USB PHONE.
1. Installing SKYPE
The LCD USB PHONE is based on Skype platform. Before using LCD USB PHONE, user must install Skype. For downloading Skype and more details, visit Skype’s official website at http://www.skype.com.
2. Installing AppoMiddleWare
Note: Do NOT connect LCD USB PHONE to the PC before installing AppoMiddleWare.
a. Run setup.exe. When the window (as in Figure 2) appears, press “NEXT” button.

b. Select the folder to be installed, as illustrated in Figure 3.

c. Select the Start Menu folder, as shown in Figure 4.

d. To begin the installation process (as in Figure 5), press “Install” button.

e. When installation is complete, the window (as in Figure 6) will appear.

f. Press “Finish” button to complete installation.
3. Connecting LCD USB PHONE
a. LCD USB PHONE is a plug-and-play USB Human Interface Device (HID).
When LCD USB PHONE is connected to PC, PC will be able to detect a new
device and install required drivers automatically.
4. Using LCD USB PHONE
a. With Skype online and running, double-click on “AppoMiddleWare.exe” or
AppoMiddleWare shortcut on desktop. A window as shown in Figure 7
will appear. Select “Allow this program to use Skype”, and then click on
“OK” button.

b. If the system tray at the bottom right corner shows the icon , it means
that the LCD USB PHONE is operational. If the icon appears, it
means that the LCD USB PHONE is not connected properly. If Skype
software is not running properly, the system tray will show the icon .
User should check and make sure Skype software is running properly.
c. After running AppoMiddleWare.exe, the LCD will show the screen as in
Figure 8 (if startup logo screen is selected, the LCD will show the startup
logo screen as in Figure 9). Buzzer will be turned on momentarily to
indicate that the LCD USB PHONE is connected to the PC successfully.
From this point, the LCD USB PHONE is fully operational.

C. Operational Description
This chapter describes the operation of LCD USB PHONE, as illustrated in Figure 10.

4. Phone Book
a. In Main menu, press “PB” key to enter Phone Book menu, Select a contact
person and then Press “YES” to place a call.
b. The alphabet selection for each corresponding key is listed in Table 2. User
can use the alphabet selection to perform quick search of contact person in
Phone Book menu. For example, if user wants to search a contact person
called Jacky, press “5” once and LCD screen will show the first contact person
which starts with letter J. If there are more than 1 contact person that
starts with J, just “UP” or “DOWN” key to select, as shown in Figure 11.

5. Place A Call
a. Place Skype Network Call (PC-to-PC):
User may press “PB” key to enter Phone Book menu, and then press
“UP” or “DOWN” key to select a person to place a call. To perform a
quick search, press any numerical key (refer to Key Description section
for more details). Press “YES” to place a call to the selected person.
Figure 12 shows the LCD when placing a call.

b. Place A PSTN Call (PC-to-Phone), or SkypeOut:

User may dial a PSTN (public switched telephone network) call directly.
The telephone number is consisted of country code + area code + local
number. For example, to place a call to a local number 12345678 in
Zhuhai (0756), China (+86), press 00 to enter “+” and then press
numerical keys directly on the LCD USB PHONE as +860756123456578.
Press “YES” to confirm to dial out as shown in Figure 13. User may press
any number directly to dial extension number. (Before placing a
SkypeOut call, user should make sure that the SkypeOut account has
sufficient funds. Otherwise, user will fail to place a call. For more details
and charges regarding SkypeOut service, please visit Skype’s official web
site at http://www.skype.com)
If user enters an invalid number such as 12345, LCD USB PHONE will
return an error message as shown in Figure 14.

6. Call On-Hold
During conversation, user may press “YES” to place the call on-hold
(Figure 15). Press “YES” again to continue the conversation.

7. Three-Party Conference Call
To start a conference call, user may establish conversation with the first

caller. Then, press “PB” key and the LCD will show as Figure 16.(Note :When using SKYPE version 2.5, you should select the second caller to start a conference call after holding the call with the first caller.)

User may search for the second caller. Once the second caller is selected,
press “YES” to establish a conference call, as shown in Figure 17:

If the second caller accepts the call, LCD will show as Figure 18. If the call
is rejected, the LCD will show as Figure 19.

After the second caller accepts the call, press and hold “YES” again to start
three-way conference call, as illustrated in Figure 20

To end the call with one of the parties, press “PB” key. Select the party and
press “DEL” key to end call with the selected party. Press “DEL” key once
more to end the conference call with both parties.
Note: Press “NO” key will end the conference call with both parties

immediately.
8. Incoming Call
When there is an incoming call, LCD USB PHONE will alert the user. As
shown in Figure 21, “GOODFRIEND” is the incoming caller.

User may press “YES” to accept the call. When the call is established, the
LCD screen will show as Figure 22.

9. End Call or Reject Call
a. To end the current conversation, press “NO” key.
b. If user does not want to answer the incoming call, press “NO” key to
reject the call.
10. Delete
When using keypad to enter characters:
a. Press “DEL” key to delete the previous character.
b. Press “NO” key to delete all characters and return to Main menu.
11. Adjust LCD Contrast
In the main menu, press and hold “PB” key to enter setting menu to adjust
LCD contrast. On the other hand, double-click AppoMiddleWare console and
then select phone setting to adjust LCD contrast. When adjusting LCD contrast,

LCD screen will show as Figure 23:

12. Speed Dial
User can set speed dial number for each contact person in Skype. As illustrated
in Figure 24, when speed dial number is set up, user can enter the speed dial
number to call the contact person. For example, if the contact person “GOOD
FRIEND” has a speed dial number 12, user can enter 12 on LCD USB PHONE
keypad and then press “YES” key to call GOOD FRIEND. Each Skype user
account may set up to 99 speed dial numbers. If SkypeOut is enabled, PSTN
numbers can also be set up with speed dial numbers.

13. Missed Call
Main menu will show a message if there are missed calls, as shown in Figure
25. User may press “DEL” key to show missed call records. Press “UP” and

“DOWN” key to scroll through the records. There are a maximum of 20
missed call records.

14. Accepted Call
To review the accepted call records, user may press and hold “PB” key enter
to View received calls n Main menu (Figure 26).

15. Call History
In the Main menu, user may press “YES” key to review the call history.
Press “UP” and “DOWN” key to scroll through the records. Call history will
hold the last 99 records, as illustrated in Figure 27.

D. AppoMiddleWare Description
AppoMiddleWare is the software that is specifically used with AppoTech’s LCD
USB PHONE. It provides fast and effective communication and control
between PC and LCD USB PHONE.

1. Multi-Language Selection
AppoMiddleWare supports multiple language display. In the system tray,
double-click on icon and then select Language. User can choose different
languages. The LCD screen will display according to the language selection,
as shown in Figure 28.

2. Audio Settings
To bring up the AppoMiddleWare setup window, right click on icon in the
system tray and then select Settings, as shown in Figure 29. In the Audio
Setting tab, user can adjust audio in and out volume settings.

3. Phone Settings
In the Phone Settings tab, user may click on the Ringer selection button to
select an audio file and its path (Figure 30). Audio files must be in WAV
format and the file size must be less than 1 MB. The audio file selection will
become effective when AppoMiddleWare setup window is closed. When
there is an incoming call, LCD USB PHONE will play the selected WAV file as
ring tone alert.
Logo files must be in BMP format. The size of the BMP must be in 128x64
dots. The logo file selection will become effective when AppoMiddleWare
setup window is closed. When the LCD USB PHONE is plugged into the USB
port with AppoMiddleWare running, the LCD screen will show the new
startup logo screen.

5. Ringing Settings
The Ringing Setting tab allows users to define the audio output for incoming
call ring tone and key tone (Figure 31). There are 8 kinds of ringer to
selected.

6. Information
This form describes SKYPE PHONE version number.
If user wants to use LCD USB PHONE keypad to control the Skype software
on the PC directly, user can enable the synchronous mode in Phone Settings
tab. Synchronous mode will become effective when AppoMiddleWare setup
window is closed. The key functions and LCD screen will be synchronous with
the Skype software.

E. FAQ
1. How to change the installed driver program from WinDriver to HID (Human Interface Devices)? Solution: LCD USB Phone is configured as HID (human interface devices). If
it shows “SKYPE PHONE Interface” in human interface devices in device manager, it means that the driver program of WinDriver is installed on PC (Figure 33). User must change the device driver to HID. To remove the driver program of WinDriver: a. Delete .inf files. If the system is set up on C drive, then user must delete
c:\windows\inf\skypedrv.inf and skypedrv.PNF. b. Delete .SYS file. Delete c:\windows\system32\drivers\windrvr6.sys. *NOTE: Show the hidden folders before deleting these files. If the operating system is Windows 2000, the Windows file path is
C:\winnt\.

To add HID driver program: a. Right click on SKYPE PHONE Interface properties, and choose update driver program. In the list of device driver program, choose USB human interface devices. b. System will find USB human interface devices after refresh.
2.User can hear contact person’s voice, but user’s voice cannot be
heard by others.
Solution: 1. Check if the microphone is working properly 2. Check if the microphone has been muted. 3. Check if Skype’s sound device setup is correct.
