ST. THERESE
FALL FESTIVAL
The annual Fall Festival
arrives on October 6th
.
What began as an outdoor
carnival in the heat of the
day has changed into a
community gathering
inside the parish hall in the
evening.
A wonderful dinner of
kolbasi and other goodies
will be accompanied by
lively Bluegrass music by

the “Fireweed” band. Beautiful, interesting items will be
displayed on tables for a silent auction. Several of these
items are depicted in these pictures.
Sherry Koski volunteered to handle items for the silent
auction and put together some beautiful baskets. Many
parish volunteers have assisted Sherry by collecting
items and working to make this a fun filled evening for
the parish.
Our parish raffle will be held during this evening’s
activities. Some people will go home with more money
in their pockets!
NOVENA AND FAITH
This year’s Novena to the Little Flower had a slightly different format with Benediction and an accompanying homily each night
by Msgr. Ed Nunez interwoven with the life of the Little Flower. The parish was indeed fortunate to have Monsignor come each
evening to share insights into St. Therese’s life. This Novena is actually intended for the whole Diocese, as this is the shrine for
the patron saint of the Diocese.
Msgr. Nunez plans to continue faith development and evangelization talks throughout the year. A schedule of his presentations
will soon appear. Thank you Father Ed!

SISTER SIMONE TARDIF
Sister Simone served for many years in
Pueblo as a Servant of the Blessed
Sacrament. She died June 8, 2012, in her
native Canada. She was well known
throughout the city. She spent many hours
in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament
and happily tutored students with their
French lessons.
Her many friends can image her speaking in
her little French accent with her Lord and
giggling at His response.

Our local Squires, Circle 5432, under the
direction of Sam Fletcher, Luis Maal, and
Jay Baillargeon won several individual
awards at the State Convention. In addition,
they were named as the Squires Circle of the
Year.
This is quite an achievement for this
recently formed group. These young men
and their adult leaders are to be congratulated
for their dedication to their church and
community. They raked leaves and
performed other community services.
They had to perform in every category,
church, community, and social, to receive
this distinction.
CONGRATULATIONS!
Pictured are Msgr. Nunez and eleven parish children who

WELCOME SISTER JOHNETTE
This summer Sister Johnette Sawyer, OSB, assumed the role of Music
Coordinator for the Shrine parish. Sister recently retired as Liturgical
Music Director at Sacred Heart Parish in Alamosa.
She chose to return to Pueblo, the city of her birth and growing-up
years. She had lived in the area of St. Leander’s Parish with her father,
mother, and sister Marilyn. Her mother was not a Catholic and died
when she was 9 years old. Her grandmother (on her father’s side)
moved into their home to care for the girls.
Her Grandmother read daily from her old Slovak prayer book and
prayed a St. Anthony’s Rosary each day. Her father announced that the
girls would attend a Catholic school in the fall. Sister remembers
praying all summer long that they would not have to attend St.
Leander’s school! After all, they had gone to Protestant Sunday school
for years; and all of their friends were at the public school. But their
father’s wish prevailed.

The choir ready to go to work!
Half way through the school year, she and Marilyn decided they wanted
to be Baptized Catholics and receive their First Holy Communion.
Sister’s father remarried in a few years, and they soon had a baby
brother. While Sister was attending Pueblo Catholic High School, her
father died. Her step-mother continued to raise the girls.
Two of Sister Johnette’s closest friends in high school planned to enter a
convent upon graduation. Sister Johnette wanted to enter also, but her
step-mother made her promise to go two years to college before making
her decision. She received a scholarship to St. Mary’s College in
Leavenworth, Kansas. Then she joined the Benedictine Motherhouse in
Chicago. In 1964 she returned to the Pueblo Diocese as Sister Johnette, a
Benedictine sister.
She has served the Church and the people of the Pueblo Diocese for 48
years. Her first years were those of an elementary teacher, and later even
principal of her old Catholic school, St. Leander’s. With changing times and more education, she moved into parish ministry
work. But throughout all the years of serving, there was an abiding love of music. This was a seed planted and encouraged by
her father. Children’s choirs, adult choirs, and parish music have filled her days for years.
Sister hopes to engage the whole Shrine of St. Therese community in singing praise and thanksgiving to the Lord each Sunday.
“We have so much to be thankful for in this life—even in our sorrows and joys the Lord is with us. I am grateful for the faithful
choir members who stepped forward to enrich our souls with music!”
In visiting, sister commented she loves Pope Benedict XVI. First, because he chose the name Benedict; second, because of his
great love of music; and third, because he shares Sister’s love of kittens! Again, welcome Sister and God be with you.
MSGR. GEORGE HOLLAND
Good friend and former pastor, Msgr. George Holland, died on June 9, 2012.
His mass of Christian burial was celebrated by Msgr. Leonard Racki at Sacred Heart
Cathedral. The Cathedral was filled with former parishioners, friends, and family. Msgr.
Holland was noted for his calmness and always being open to listen to his parishioners.
His last years were greatly helped by our parishioner George Beauvais who served as his
driver and personal valet. He went each day to assist Msgr. Holland. Many other friends
helped also such as Dominican Sister, Kevin Clavin, who came on holidays and summer time
visits. Most people saw Msgr. Holland as a saintly priest, who faithfully served throughout
the Diocese. St. Therese parish was blessed to have Msgr. Holland as their pastor for several
years.

DEADLINE NEARING
FOR CONTRIBUTIONS
TO CHURCHES
Charitable Contributions must be made
by December 31 to be deductible on
your 2012 tax return. They don’t
always have to be in cash. Appreciated
stock, which you have owned for more
than one year, can be donated to your
church or charity. The shares you give
can be deducted at full market value
and you can avoid the capital gains
taxes you’d owe it you sold them. This
takes a little time to arrange, so you
should contact your accountant or stock
broker. Even the church/charity to
which you are making the gift should
be willing to help you handle this gift
arrangement and provide a letter
showing the value of the gift for tax
purposes.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
St. Hugo tells us that the
more he attended to the
worship of God with all
care and diligence, the
more God provided him
with the necessities of
life.
