Sewing 2
Sewing 3: Introduction to Tailoring
The sewing short courses I teach are specifically designed to introduce and further develop garment construction techniques, a knowledge of fibres and fabrics, and their applications. I enjoy being able to assist and teach students to attain the knowledge required to successfully alter patterns and fit their own garments.
Teaching short courses in the School of Fashion and Textiles at RMIT is both stimulating and rewarding. As a tutor I look forward to meeting each new group of students as we embark on the wonderful journey that is fashion, sewing and making your own garments. Often students undertake the sewing short courses as a first step towards establishing their own business venture, and feedback indicates that the courses at RMIT are both worthwhile and life-changing. All students appreciate the excellent facilities available to them at RMIT.
I also teach industrial sewing to tertiary students at RMIT, including students whom I have previously taught in my short course sewing classes. They have always acknowledged and valued the skills learned there.
The School’s short courses department continually strives to develop new and exciting courses to meet the needs of our students.

Shoe Making: Creating Footwear by Hand
Shoe Making: Sandals
I was attracted to RMIT custom shoemaking as it’s the most well equipped university workshop in the South Pacific, and is the only place to hold courses of this kind in this part of the world!
It’s a great space to work from and learn about the art, craft and trade of shoemaking. A skill that is always engaging, with always more to learn.
The short course gives you a taste of what it takes to handmake a shoe from start to finish. From designing to making; with all the wide array of skills and processes that this involves!
From here, you can apply this in your own way in your studio. Or maybe even go on to delve deeper into the craft on RMIT’s one year Certificate IV in Custom Shoemaking.

Portfolio Preparation in Interior Decoration
The interior design short courses are an excellent introduction to the elements and principles of design within the context of interior design and decoration. Students resolve visual and spatial problems in 2D and 3D practical projects.
Design and Decoration for Living is another great course centred around the residential living space and Portfolio Preparation for Interior Design and Decoration will assist in the creation of a targeted TAFE application folio.
I was drawn back to RMIT after studying here to become a teacher, as I’ve found it to be a great learning and teaching environment in which to develop creative and practical skills.
The approach I take in my work is a problem solving one exploring a range of ways to tackle any creative task.
What excited me the most is helping develop each student’s individual style over the ten week course – it’s enormously rewarding.

Clear Writing for Effective Communication
In brief, both courses explain and demonstrate how clear, concise and compelling writing always begins, proceeds and ends with clear, precise and insightful thinking. And this applies to all genres of internal and external communications.
More than ever, short courses provide essential professional (and personal) development in every industry as much as in communications and media. On-going learnability and teachability are prerequisites in these ever-changing times we live in. That includes me too.
I particularly love co-writing projects with students. It’s a very rewarding learning experience for all involved. I have to think fast on my feet in a short time-span to get results but it’s exhilarating – like skydiving. I never know what the outcome will be but, so far, I have never ceased to be amazed.
I have been an art and copy geek since way back in my advertising agency times. The synergy of words and images is my favorite thing. For me, bringing ideas to life on the page or screen is like making a little movie.
