(Revised January 19, 2004)
Shiloh cemetery is located on Shiloh Drive about 10 miles west of Smithfield. The cemetery obviously is receiving maintenance in that the grass has been mowed and most leaves and branches have been cleared from the property. There are still some smaller branches scattered about … possibly the result of hurricane Isabel. Contact [email protected] or [email protected] for questions about this report.Volunteers were careful not to disturb gravesite artifacts and carefully worked with a soft brush using a mixture of shaving cream and water to clean and make legible the inscriptions on the stones. Water was then used to remove any residue from the stones. A previous transcription by the Southampton Historical Society (date unknown) obtained from the Internet was made available for correlation purposes. The intent was to include photographs that would identify individual graves; however, as the time required and the file size grew voluminously larger, that intent gave way to practicality. Two overall views of the cemetery are included as well as two markers that depict burial sites of civil war soldiers, Shiloh church and community members. Efforts were made to preserve the ‘look and feel’ of the inscriptions as regards spelling and word arrangement. The ‘[fs]’ indicates a footstone inscription.
