fowler junctionCentered around a speculative rail station serving a commuter train from Athens, GA to Atlanta, GA, this design for a mixed use community utilizes the rich history of the site, which features abandoned rail depot and industrial complex. The design also employs contextual cues from the surrounding community and its historic street layout and character, seamlessly connecting with the existing urban fabric. A variety of uses are present the site, all of which feature design characteristics that emphasize walkability and increased interaction among residents, creating a community that is livable, functional, and enjoyable.

Designed with a focus on functionality without sacrificing aesthetics, the plan for the landscape surrounding this 5500 ft2 house draws inspiration from other Antebellum homes in the area. Located on the historic Milledge Avenue in Athens, GA, the site plan satisfies the client’s needs, such as private parking areas for guests, large entertainment space, pool, private garden, and areas for service and storage.

uga memorial garden
uga memorial gardenDesigned with the intent to provoke a lasting impact on the visitor, this design for the UGA Veteran’s Memorial Garden - which honors UGA students who have given their lives in the defense of the United States - utilizes angular, striking lines. The aim of these sharp, dynamic lines is to create tension within the space and hopefully provoke thought and remember-ance about those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. Large shade trees, layered plantings, and a sense of enclosure all work to create a peaceful atmosphere. However, the functionality of the space as a major artery through campus is not overlooked, as students can easily navigate through this greenspace while taking in the reflective environment.

Looking for a perceived “injury” within the urban landscape in Athens, Georgia, I stumbled across an area of a parking lot that seemed to have a stormwater drainage issue. This parking lot, located on the corner of Hull and Broad Street, a major corridor into Downtown Athens and the UGA campus, serves the Suntrust Bank Building. The corner of this parking lot (where the drainage issue was occuring) is adjacent to a poorly marked UGA bus stop. Seeking to solve two problems with one solution, this design for a “stormwater bus stop” solves the drainage problem by creating a large, biorentention cell that catches and begins to treat the stormwater coming from the parking lot. A bus shelter, created from repurposed materials, clearly marks the bus stop. Informational graphics within the structure inform the bus rider about the problems created by poor stormwater management practices and the ways to improve the use of precious resources.

athens pedestrian districtIn an effort to enhance the transition from the greenspace of UGA’s North Campus quad to the urban fabric of Downtown Athens, this plan for a small pedestrian district provides the city of Athens with something it has lacked - urban greenspace. This plan, which removes vehicles from College Avenue and limits their presence on Clayton Street, improves pedestrian conditions and allocates urban space to hold markets, concerts, art installations. All of this is done to create a more vibrant, active streetscape that becomes a destination in itself, increasing revenue for downtown businesses and reduces the emphasis on the automobile in the downtown area.
