Teaching Pupils how to Develop Motivation and Resilience
Target audience
All school staff
Description
It is said that if ‘boredom is a state of mind’, then so too is ‘motivation and having the desire to learn,
a determination to develop and the resilience to carry on’. This workshop is designed to give
participants an opportunity to explore Motivation and Resilience and how we might help our young
people develop these important traits which are top of the list of qualities needed to survive the ever-
changing demands of the 21st Century.
Aims
The workshop will give participants the opportunity to explore:
What we mean by ‘resilience’
What intrinsic & extrinsic factors affect our ability to be resilient
How we can help young people grow and develop ‘resiliency buffers’
What part ‘labels’ and ‘belief’ play in growing or diminishing motivation
How changing a word might help to change attitudes and outcomes
Whether the language we use really does encourage young people
towards successful outcomes
Approach
This training is split between two separate sessions in order to give space for
participants to progress their thinking and to put some ideas into practice. The

Second Annual Learning Mentor Conference with Jenny Mosley
Target audience
All existing or aspiring Learning Mentors and those with an interest in their role.
Description
Building on the success of our first conference with Vic Goddard (Principal of
Passmores Academy, Harlow and star of Educating Essex) we are delighted to
welcome Jenny Mosley as our Keynote Speaker for the 2014 conference.
Aims
As well as listening to Jenny’s motivational speech course delegates will have the opportunity to select from a
menu of workshops to suit individual needs and there will be opportunities to network with colleagues in similar roles.
Approach Keeping Our Spirits High – A Keynote Presentation For Learning Mentors
The key to releasing ‘excellence’ in others lies in your own positive energy. If you can ‘be the change you want to see’ (Ghandi)
then you can inspire others. However life is complex and the bridges of communication between us all often need restoring.
Therein lies the spiritual dimension of our work. Keeping a sense of perspective is essential. Seeing the humour in situations
will ensure that you do not feel the sting too sharply and therefore you are more able to keep the balance. During this keynote
Jenny hopes to help you focus on your own emotional, social and spiritual intelligence, reactivate your own sense of playfulness
and encourage you to laugh at your foibles. Jenny would also love you to leave with a wider vision of what can be achieved if
people are kinder to themselves and each other.
The will also be a range of workshops to include:
Pupil Resilience and Motivation
Running of Vibrant Circle Times to Support Social and Emotional Learning
Depression and Worrying Behaviours
Understanding, Setting up and Running Groups
About the Speaker
Jenny is a highly acclaimed author and trainer both in the UK and Internationally. She has worked with governments and advisors on how to create emotionally intelligent schools. Jenny taught on a master’s degree for many years at Bristol University supervising a range of action research projects on the importance of circle time and building children’s self-esteem. She is consultant to an on-going Quality Circle Time project in India and wrote the circle time guidance for SEAD and SEAL.

Rebooting Computing - iPad in the Learners’ Hands
Target Audience
Teachers from Primary and Special schools who would like to learn more about how to get started with iPads and consider its
relevance to a range of subject areas and skill sets. The course may also be relevant to Secondary teachers who would like to
find out about how KS3 pupils could use an iPad for effective learning across the curriculum.
Description
SET’s digital programme ‘Rebooting Computing’ is has been conceived as a way of reinvigorating the subject of ICT/computer
science in schools following the Government’s scrapping of the old ‘dull and uninspiring’ ICT curriculum. The new curriculum
focus is Computing with a greater emphasis on creativity and getting ‘under the bonnet’ of technology.
There are many different approaches that schools can take to inspire pupils at all levels to become ‘creative’ with technology
rather than simply learning how to use it. iPad and other new technologies are great way of engaging learners. The iPad
provides a fun, powerful, yet easy to use set of tools that anyone can pick up quickly. Apps can be used by students of all
abilities and as teachers we can harness the power of the iPad to ensure its full potential for learning is met.
Aims
To learn about and understand the iPad and to gain a basic understanding of how to use it
To understand the different ways that the iPad can be used when learning with others: Collaboration apps
To gain an insight into how the iPad can be a good way of engaging students through making: creating movies,
animations and QR codes
To gain practical skills in establishing the use of the iPad through exploring, enquiring and practising: Basic
programming apps, searching skills, field trips, phonics and videos
To gain practical skills in using assessment tools, language apps and augmented reality.
To discuss the implementation of effective iPad use strategies in schools
Approach
Participants on the course are encouraged to bring their own iPad,
although some will be available for those who cannot. Participants will use
the iPad in various different contexts covering subjects from across the
curriculum, have an opportunity to gain hands on experience, and be able
to ask questions and get practical advice on how to work with iPads in
their particular school settings. This course will enable participants to gain
a rounded understanding of the subject, inspired in part by the NESTA
report ‘Decoding Learning’ which analysis the many different approaches
to learning with technology based first and foremost on good teaching
practice.

Therapeutic Arts
Target audience
All Staff in Primary and Secondary Educational Settings who
have responsibility for working supportively with children on a
1:1 basis or in small groups.
Description
Traditionally we rely on words to support troubled youngsters.
We expect them to respond on an intellectual level. We get in
response: “Dunno,” “I’m bored,” “I get picked on,” “It’s not
fair...” We often feel that we get nowhere. Emotional
memories may be stored as wordless, irrational representations of
emotional life. Pre-verbal experiences often link to Attachment (Bowlby). Children
then bottle up these feelings and they leak out, often in the guise of extreme or irrational behaviour: bullying,
aggression, separation anxiety, depression... The use of the arts utilizes the creative process which exists within each of us.
Creative activity can increase brain levels of serotonin (linked to depression). Image and metaphor enables connections in the
child’s inner world. A healthier society is one in which the expression, communication and effective handling of emotional
experience within a safe and supportive arena is not merely the property of a few psychologically-minded people, or restricted to
an art gallery or theatre. It should be possible for many more people to be emotionally free, to be able to express, communicate
and handle their feelings. These workshops will provide an introduction to the therapeutic use of the arts and will use a variety
of different art forms. Each art medium offers different sorts of experiences. People sometimes choose to communicate or
externalise inner visual pictures (through art/play/clay/sand), sometimes inner and outer dialogues and voices (through role
play, puppets) and sometimes inner energies (through movement/music).
Aims
To understand how the arts can help young people with their feelings
To feel more confident and able to support young people through the use of the arts
Delegates will begin to understand what drives student behaviour
To learn the facilitation skills helpful when responding to the images and metaphors produced by young people
To experiment freely with any of the following: paint, sand-tray, puppets, clay, music, movement, drama, poetry,
postcards, guided visualisations and story.
Approach
The sessions will provide some theory and discussion, plus lots of exploration. There will be opportunities to experiment with a
range of art mediums in a non-threatening way. There is absolutely no need to have any experience of the arts in order to
benefit from these workshops, just a willingness to experiment and have fun.

P4C/Thinkers’ Talk Afternoon
Target audience
All class teachers, primary or secondary who seek better dialogue in the classroom, whether they are already
doing P4C or are looking for a standalone approach to Thinkers’ Talk.
Description
The first half of the course covers “Help Me Find My Voice”, a set of principles designed to draw Wallflower
Children into the conversation. Activities will illustrate ways to engage children who are worried about getting
things wrong, struggle to form opinions, find listening a struggle, or have discovered that “I dunno” is a good
way to get out of being asked to speak.
Before the half-time coffee, there will be a “commercial break” during which Jason (Philosophy Man ) will
show some resources that are available for purchase, including “The Works”, a comprehensive package of
DVDs, minibooks and an indexed compendium of downloadable resources priced at £150 + VAT.
The second half focuses on Thinkers’ Games, a collection of activities for making thinking physical. The
games look different on the surface but share an underlying structure that helps all learners engage with
dialogue and become more independent in their thinking. All participants will receive a copy of Thinkers’
Game minibook and access to an e-book of the Help Me Find My Voice principles.
Aims
- Practical strategies for engaging reluctant speakers
- Methods for creating engaging questions
- Get away from spoon feeding and foster independence
- Counter disaffection by turning discussions into games
- Provide the most practiced speakers in the classroom with opportunities to go further
Approach
A series of activities to illustrate a range of pedagogical principles that participants can integrate into their
teaching practice. The facilitation method used is the “principle sandwich” in which brief explanations of the
principles are sandwiched between contrasting activities. The first activity shows you that the idea works and
the second deepens your understanding.
About the Facilitator
Jason is a leading trainer and writer in the field of philosophy for children. His specialism is
developing practical techniques to engage more children in thinking through classroom
dialogue. His weekly bulletin of resources and stories is received by over 10,000 teachers. He
