This well-known melody was
created to provide a choral
se"ng for J. C. F. von Schiller’s
poem, “An die Freude” (To Joy),
as the final movement of the
composer’s Ninth Symphony.
The author, a prominent
Presbyterian pastor and author,
wrote the words with this tune
in mind.

PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP
Great and good God,
give us pure hearts that we may see you,
humble hearts that we may hear you,
hearts of love that we may serve you,
hearts of faith that we may live in you,
reverent hearts that we may worship you,
here and in the world out there,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. –Dag Hammarskjöld

*CALL TO CONFESSION
SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY IDLEWILD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
15TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME; JULY 16, 2017
8:30 & 11:00 A.M.
*PRAYER OF CONFESSION
You are the giver of all good things, God:
rain and sun,
day and night,
justice and righteousness,
peace to the old,
energy to the young.
We are the ones who take from you;
taking all we need as you supply,
taking in gratitude and wonder and joy.
But then we take more:
taking more than we need,
taking more than you give us,
taking from our brothers and sisters,
taking from the poor and the weak;
taking because we are frightened, and so greedy;
taking because we are anxious and so fearful,
taking because we are driven, and so uncaring.
Forgive us, God,
and give us peace beyond our fear,
and so end our greed.
Give us well-being beyond our anxiety, and so end our fear.
Give us abundance and so end our drivenness,
and so end our uncaring.
Turn our taking into giving,
since we are in your giving image.
(silent prayer and meditation)
Amen.
(from “Awed to Heaven, Rooted in Earth” by Walter Brueggemann)
In the presence of a holy God,
we become aware of the ways
we fall short of God’s best
hopes for us, and the ways we
have hurt others. We turn to
God in prayer, asking for
forgiveness.

“CHILD OF BLESSING, CHILD OF PROMISE” (verses 1 & 2)
Child of blessing, child of promise, Child of love, our love’s expression,
Baptized with the Spirit’s sign, Love’s creation, loved indeed!
With this water God has sealed you Fresh from God, refresh our spirits;
Unto love and grace divine. Into joy and laughter lead.

THE LORD’S PRAYER
BAPTISM (11:00) MS. APPLE
BRANDON LEE WALKER AND
MARA LAYNE WALKER, DAUGHTER OF BRANDON & AUGUST WALKER
(TED & JENNY MEALOR, BAPTISM BUDDIES)
We express gratude that
through God’s grace and
Christ’s giving of himself on the
cross we are forgiven and
restored to God and
one another.
We sing in thanksgiving for the
gi0s of forgiveness
and new life.
The Passing of the Peace is one
of the most ancient
responses in worship. Having
received Christ’s peace,
we pass it on.
We invite young children to
come to the front at this me.
Each week children bring
quarters to put in educaon
scks, so that young girls
around the world might have
the opportunity for an
educaon. Just $275 (1,100
quarters) provides scholarship,
supplies, and empowerment for
a young girl. As our children
come forward for the Time with
the Younger Church, please
pass them quarters to share.
The children lead the
congregaon in The Lord’s
Prayer using “Forgive us our
debts as we forgive
our debtors.”
Before we can know God, God
knows us. Baptism, one of the
two sacraments of the
Presbyterian Church (USA), is in
response to the grace of God,
who calls us to be the people of
God. We welcome children and
adults into the fellowship of
faith. Parents, the
congregation, and children of
the church make promises to
guide, nurture and love the
baptized person.
Following Time with the
Younger Church, children PK-SK
may go to C3. Parents, please
take your children out to the
hallway, by the T.K. Young
Room, and sign them in.
Helpers will escort them to the
library. Children two years old
or younger may go to the
nursery (Conference Room).
“Come Inside” was
commissioned by Idlewild
Church in memory of Margaret
Montgomery, mother of Steve
Montgomery. It is based upon
the biblical emphasis on
hospitality that, when Abraham
and Sarah welcomed strangers,
they turned out to be angels. It
also reminds us of the vision of
Idlewild, that “all who enter
find a home.”
The opening four lines of this
hymn celebrate aCributes of
Christ that are revealed through
holy Scripture, which serves as
a lantern, a chart, and a
compass for the church in
seeking to know Christ beCer.
The se"ng of the tune comes
from Felix Mendelssohn’s Elijah.
The sermon is a reflecon on
the day’s scriptures, suggesng
implicaons for our
faith and life.
BAPTISM HYMN
“CHILD OF BLESSING, CHILD OF PROMISE” (verses 3 & 4)
Child of joy, our dearest treasure, Child of God, your loving Parent,
God’s you are, from God you came. Learn to listen for God’s call.
Back to God we humbly give you: Grow to laugh and sing and worship,
Live as one who bears Christ’s name. Trust and love God more than all.

The Apostles’ Creed may
originally have been a
baptismal creed. While it is
stated in the singular, it is
meant to be used corporately.
In saying it together we are
united with the faithful of the
church from all ages.
We bring to God our
celebraons and cares, praying
for the world, the church and
those close to us.

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH MS. APPLE
THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord;
who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried;
he descended into hell;
the third day he rose again from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and sitteth on the right hand
of God the Father Almighty;
from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost;
the holy catholic church;
the communion of saints;
the forgiveness of sins;
the resurrection of the body;
and the life everlasting. Amen.

(8:30) “FAIREST LORD JESUS” CALVIN HAMPTON
Donia Wade, soloist
(11:00) “O COME, YE SERVANTS OF THE LORD” CHRISTOPHER TYE (1505 – 1573)
O come, ye servants of the Lord, and praise His holy name From early morn to setting sun, His might on earth proclaim. His laws are just, and glad the heart: He makes His mercies known. Ye princes come, ye people too, and bow before His throne. –from Psalm 113
Doxology literally means
“words of glory.” Doxologies
have long been used by Jews
and Chrisans to praise God.
Here we honor and thank God
“from whom all blessings flow.”
The invitaon to the Lord’s
Supper is extended to all who
desire to follow Christ,
remembering that access to the
communion table is not a right
conferred upon the worthy, but
a privilege given to the
undeserving who come in faith,
repentance, and love. Even one
who has doubts or whose trust
is wavering is invited to the
table in order to be assured of
God’s love and grace in
Christ Jesus.
Everything longed for in this
hymn text is a reminder of how
far our present world is from
what God wants. Yet this is not
just wishful thinking; it is a call
to acon, a summons to
parcipate in the fulfillment of
God’s desire for all earth’s
people to live in radical shalom.
*DOXOLOGY

Children's Church Con@nued (C3) (library)
We are covered with volunteers for the remainder of the
summer. Beginning August 20, when we start our fall schedule,
it would be outstanding if a few men and women could commit
to being regular rotang volunteers so that we don't have
different teachers every single week. Consistency for our
children would truly be best. Please let Caitlin Bomar know if
you are interested in being a regular C3 teacher this fall.
Sunday School teachers for the 2017-18 school year are
needed. We are sll in need of a few more people to commit to
being Sunday School teachers this coming school year. Our
most disnct need is for the PK/JK Sunday School class. Sunday
School teachers are remembered for years by the children they
teach for the important role that they play in the spiritual
formaon of young people. Is God calling you to fill this
important need?
Back-to-school pool party for families of children 5th grade and
under will be Saturday, August 26. All families of children 5th
grade and under are invited. The party will be from 2:00 to
5:00 p.m. at the home of Kim and Judy Johnson (768 Charles
Place, Memphis). Please bring your swimsuit, a towel, and
a side dish or dessert to share. Kindly RSVP to Caitlin no later
than August 20. Older siblings are more than welcome to come.
We hope to see you there!

WELCOME TO IDLEWILD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
Whether you are vising for the first me, or are a longme member, we are blessed to have you with us.
You will noce that our vision statement begins and ends with “Idlewild Presbyterian Church is a community
in which....all who enter might find a home.”
We take these words seriously. We strive to be a community as diverse and hospitable as God’s kingdom.
We don’t all look or act alike; God knows we don’t all think alike. We don’t all read the Bible the same way.
We bring different quesons, and we carry different burdens. But every Sunday, we worship together as one.
In this grand old church, we do Sunday morning in some preQy tradional (very Presbyterian!) ways. We study
the teachings and the acons of Jesus. We sing many of the same hymns our grandparents sang. Yes, in our
preaching and our prayers, (and many of our newer hymns!) we wrestle with the challenges of the modern
world. I hope your heart will hear something personal and relevant this morning—a word of comfort, a spur to
acon, a call to a deeper relaonship with God.
A1er the 8:30 service, join us for Sunday School. There are lots of opons. A1er the 11:00 service, sck
around. Come to the fellowship hall for some punch or a cup of coffee. Introduce yourself to one of our clergy.
There are tons of opportunies here to feed your soul and expand your spirit. Try one out. You never know—
you just might be home!
Joyfully,
Pastor Steve Montgomery
