Fami ly Night

A spec ia l Fami ly Night will be held on the evening of T h u r s d a y , D e c e m b e r 10 du r ing which t ime par t ic ipa t ing m e r c h a n t s will give spec ia l a t tent ion to the chi ldren a s they c o m e to shop fo r the i r C h r i s t m a s g i f t s . Some m e r c h a n t s will de s igna t e spec ia l s a l e s c l e r k s to a t -tend to the ch i ld ren and help them find su i tab le gift i t e m s .

Fami ly Night will be the t ime when the f r e e hot dogs and the f r e e ba l loons will be d i s t r i bu ted to the ch i ld ren . The C h a m b e r e m p h a s i z e d that , b e c a u s e they cannot e s t i m a t e the n u m b e r of ch i ld ren that will come to town that night , the C h a m b e r will have 1,000 f r e e hot dogs to bo s e r v e d to the f i r s t 1,000 ch i ld ren that ask fo r them.

F r e e Movies F r e e mov ie s will a l s o be on the agenda at the Spar ta

T h e a t e r . The movies will be run f o r the chi ldren f r o m 1:00 p . m . until G:00 p . m . on Sa tu rday , D e c e m b e r 19,

The movies will give Mom and Dad a chance to leave the ch i ld ren in a s a f e p l ace while they go about the i r C h r i s t m a s shopping .

Going into t h e i r f inal game l a s t F r i d a y , the S p a r t a n s had a 7 -0 -1 r e c o r d with only a 6 - 6 tie with Cooper sv i l l e spoi l ing a p e r f e c t s e a s o n . In e ight con te s t s the Blue and White s c o r e d 194 points while holding the i r oppon-e n t s to only 40.

T h e S p a r t a n s f in ished T r i - R i v e r play with a 4 -0 -1 r e c o r d , giving the t e am an undisputed League c rown, Greenv i l l e f in i shed one half g a m e behind the S p a r t a n s , with a 4 -1-0

The S p a r t a v i c t o r y was a l s o the eighth c o n s e c u t i v e Spar tan v i c to ry o v e r a Comstock P a r k team a f t e r having losing e ight s t r a igh t to the P a n t h e r s .

Main St. Christmas lights to be installed soon

The Spar ta Main S t r e e t C h r i s t m a s light p r o g r a m is e n t e r i n g i t s f inal s t a g e s with the new d e c o r a t i o n s due to a r r i v e in Spa r t a within a few d a y s .

O v e r 40 d e c o r a t i o n s will be u sed , one f o r each light pole in the downtown shopping a r e a . The total cos t of the p r o j e c t will be about $2,500 with mos t of it go-ing t o w a r d s the c o s t s of the l igh t s . The ba lance , about $600, will be needed to pay the C o n s u m e r s P o w e r C o m -pany f o r ins ta l l a t ion of the l ights on the light po l e s .

The newes t of the d e c o r a t i o n s used in p rev ious y e a r s will 1x5 put up a l s o . The o l d e r and m o r e worn holiday d e c o r a t i o n s will no longe r be u s e d .

The Vi l lage h a s con t r ibu ted $1,000 to the C h r i s t m a s light p r o g r a m with the ba lance of the funds coming f r o m the local C h a m b e r of C o m m e r c e , A C h a m b e r s p o k e s -man sa id that they w e r e s t i l l s h o r t of t h e i r s h a r e of the fund but expec ted to r a i s e it b e f o r e the end of the month .

The following Monday the school held a s p e c i a l a s s e m b l y , Mr , B r a d f o r d , a q u a r t e r b a c k f r o m S p a r t a ' s l a s t c h a m -pionship team dur ing 1953 spoke . Then the 1970 c h a m -pionship team rece ived the i r t rophy ,

Sa turday , November 10, Steve Okkonan was S p a r t a ' s r unne r at the s t a t e t r ack mee t in Ann A r b o r , He placed 13th, Congratula t ions!

Two school c lubs , the F u t u r e H o m e m a k e r s of A m e r i c a and the Spanish Club, held the i r in i t i a t ions l a s t week. Everyone had a g r e a t t ime ini t ia t ing t h e i r new m e m b e r s .

Last Tuesday s e v e r a l Gove rnmen t c l a s s e s took a field t r i p to the Grand Rapids Po l i ce Station and to the U, S. J u s t i c e Cour t where they saw a j u r y t r i a l . The t r i p was in t e res t ing a s well a s i n f o r m a t i v e .

As the da te of the school play swif t ly a p p r o a c h e s , the cas t and c rew busi ly p r e p a r e f o r iJiose big nights of November 19, 20 and 21, Th i s y e a r the play will be t h e a t e r - i n - t h e - r o u n d . T h i s means the audience will s i t in c i r c u l a r rows around the p e r f o r m a n c e .

At the g e n e r a l mee t ing of the S p a r t a C o o p e r a t i v e N u r s e r y held at the Masonic T e m p l e , a c r e a t i v e workshop was p r e p a r e d by the t e a c h e r s of the N u r s e r y School , M r s , Donald Gohn and M r s , J a m e s P u n c h e s , A f t e r a s h o r t b u s i n e s s mee t ing , the m o t h e r s w e r e put to work c r e a t i n g p i c t u r e s f r o m s o a p s u d s , making c o l l a g e s , f inge r pa in t ing , s c u l p t u r i n g f o r m s f r o m Magic C l a y , c r e a t i n g m o n s t e r s f r o m milk weed pods , and d e c o r a t i n g felt f i nge r puppe t s . Many c l e v e r , o r ig ina l a r t i c l e s e m e r g e d . Dur ing th i s p a s t s u m m e r many M e r i t B a d g e s w e r e e a r n e d with those a s s o c i a t e d with the o u t d o o r s being mos t p r o m i n e n t . It i s through the e a r n i n g of MeMt B a d g e s that Boy Scouts advance through the v a r i o u s r a n k s with that of Eagle Scout be ing the h ighes t a w a r d .

Two Spa r t a Boy Scouts w e r e advanced to the r ank of Eagle Scout , Bil l Wheat and Steve H e l s e l , Bill Wheat was p r e s e n t e d by U, S, A t to rney John Mal inowskl and Steve Helse l was In t roduced by Judge John T, L e t t s .

Judge L e t t s , in h i s r e c o l l e c t i o n , r e c a l l e d only one Eagle Scout a p p e a r i n g b e f o r e h im in the c o u r t r o o m , and that fo r a m i n o r o f f e n s e . A t to rney John Mal inowskl did not r eca l l any i n s t a n c e s in which a Boy Scout was involved .

Today , being our 5th a n n i v e r s a r y , Lil l ian Blough read a br ie f h i s t o r y of ou r c l u b ' s a c t i v i t i e s .

F i f t een c h a r t e r m e m b e r s w e r e p r e s e n t today. B i r t h -day cake , Ice c r e a m and cof fee w e r e s e r v e d .

A cake with f ive c a n d l e s w a s lighted by C ra Sau r , J e s s i e Ches lek and M y r t a Nequis t , The g i r l s h i d s o m e t roub le blowing the cand le s out , but quickly d i scove red the r e a s o n . T h i s cake was taken to F l o r e n c e o'pangen-b e r g , a f o r m e r p r e s i d e n t who i s r e c o v e r i n g f rom a s t r o k e ,
